A minor prophet majoring in ministry
For Micah, one of the minor prophets of the Old Testament, ministry was not merely a profession. It was the unavoidable evidence of his relationship with God. Micah wasn’t a king or a priest, just an ordinary guy living in an age of corruption, greed and injustice. Without the advantages of office or social standing, Micah outed Israel’s leaders for exploiting the poor, taking bribes, and twisting the law for personal gain (Micah 2:1–2) Instead of excusing leadership’s ‘idiosyncrasies’, Micah likened their actions to cannibalism, accusing them of devouring the very people they were meant to protect (Micah 3:5–7). Don’t overlook the gravity of Micah’s public excoriation of the most powerful people in the land. These men had already silenced many voices before his.
Even as he calls out sin, Micah points both the corrupt and the exploited to the God who delights to show them mercy (Micah 7:18). Micah reminds Israel, and us, that ministry is not limited to pointing out others’ failures but alerts each other to the truth of the Gospel. That none of us are fit for heaven without God’s grace and love.
And that brings us to humility. Unlike many prophets who spoke and resided in royal courts, Micah stayed among ordinary people. He dedicated his life to serving others, not to elevating himself. What a timely reminder to us that we are all called to minister. And how liberating it is to know that effective ministry is not on us alone, but the inescapable result of our relationship with God.
