Christ our Passover
The Passover, instituted by God to deliver the Israelites from bondage in Egypt, serves as a powerful shadow of the promise of salvation.
Every year, the celebration of Passover was an ordinance for Israel and for any Gentile who believed in the God of Israel to remember the promise God had made to save the world from its sins and death.
Jesus Himself became the fulfillment of the Passover. The fact that Jesus was crucified physically on the day of the Passover highlights this fulfillment. This spotless lamb signified Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, who was without sin and offered as the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of the world.
The lambs in the Old Testament had to be sacrificed repeatedly, but Christ was sacrificed only once. The Apostle Paul affirms this typology by referring to Christ as "our Passover" (1 Corinthians 5:7).
Once the lamb was selected, it had to be slaughtered and its blood drained. This blood was then to be taken and struck on the doorposts of the house. The instruction was clear: the people were to remain inside their homes, and when the angel of destruction passed through the land of Egypt to strike the firstborn, God said, "When I see the blood, I will pass over (Exodus 12:13).
What the blood did in the context of Passover was to exempt the people of Israel from destruction. Likewise, anyone who puts their faith in the sacrifice of Jesus is exempt from destruction, from being condemned to death. The blood speaks of forgiveness and exemption from being condemned with the world.
This truth is echoed in John 3:16. The blood has been shed once, and it still flows for whoever will believe. As the angel of death passed over the people who had the blood on the lintels of their doors, so also, those who have been washed by the blood of Christ are delivered from eternal death.
Have you believed in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ yet? His blood is enough for you to escape the death and destruction that will come upon the world. Believe and be saved.
Prayer Focus:
Thank you, Jesus, that you are my Passover Lamb. I receive your full salvation: forgiveness through your blood and deliverance through your life.
