Jesus Calling: 5 Days of Hopeনমুনা

Hope in a Dry Land
Introduction
Picture the desert, where the sun scorches, the wind stings, and the dryness in the air permeates every breath. Minus shade, shelter, or water, the excruciating conditions of the desert can prove fatal for a person in a matter of hours or days.
For the biblical writers, the desert was more than a physical place— it symbolized deprivation, desperation, severe hardship, and total dependence on the Lord. When God, through prophets such as Isaiah, promised to transform the harsh desert into a thriving, prosperous land for His people, it gave them hope. This promise was a declaration of God’s power to bring renewal and life where none seemed possible.
In today’s study, you will explore what that promise means for you today. You will also look at how the protection this hope of God’s future transformation provides can help you during your driest and most barren seasons.
Excerpt From Jesus Calling®
Remember that you live in a fallen world: an abnormal world tainted by sin. Much frustration and failure result from your seeking perfection in this life. There is nothing perfect in this world except Me. That is why closeness to Me satisfies deep yearnings and fills you with Joy.
I have planted longing for perfection in every human heart. This is a good desire, which I alone can fulfill. But most people seek this fulfillment in other people and earthly pleasures or achievements. Thus they create idols, before which they bow down. I will have no other gods before Me! Make Me the deepest desire of your heart. Let Me fulfill your yearning for perfection.
Dwell
As you know only too well, you live in a fallen world: an abnormal world tainted by sin. However, in Isaiah 35:1-10, the prophet Isaiah paints a beautiful picture of the transformation and restoration that will come when Christ returns. He describes a once dangerous desert blossoming into a fertile and vibrant land. Isaiah’s words remind us that God’s promises are sure, bringing forth life where none was thought possible.
Application Questions
- What hope do you gain from Isaiah’s vision in Isaiah 35:3-4?
- Are you ever tempted to think that the Lord has forsaken you? What assurances does this passage give if you feel that way? How do these assurances affect you? (See Isaiah 49:14–16)
- Think about the wounds on the palms of Jesus’ hands from being nailed to the cross. How is that like having your name engraved on His hands? (See John 20:24–29)
