Living in God’s Peace: A 12-Day Journey Through Scripture

DAY 6 OF 12

Peace Within and Without

Psalm 122 is a Song of Ascents. Locals and pilgrims from afar sang this song as they ascended the hills that led to Jerusalem and the holy mount on which the temple of the Lord stood. David began his psalm by declaring, “I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go into the house of the Lord’ ” (v. 1). The focus of the psalm seems to be on the unity of the people of Israel who traveled to Jerusalem and the house of the Lord “to give thanks to the name of the Lord” (v. 4). What brings about this unity and what results from it is peace, a word that appears three times in as many verses: “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem . . . Peace be within your walls . . . I will now say, ‘Peace be within you’ ” (vv. 6–8).

This is an important but sometimes overlooked aspect of peace— it cultivates harmony and unity. Individual peace is good, but community peace is special, whether in the family, the church, or a city. When people of peace assemble, the goodness and wholeness of peace are multiplied.

Are you aware of disharmony in your family, your church, your friends? How can you bring peace to the points of conflict in order to restore unity?

About this Plan

Living in God’s Peace: A 12-Day Journey Through Scripture

The story of the Bible is the story of peace. But peace isn’t simply a feeling of calm or ease. It is a way of experiencing life as we were always meant to, in relationship with our Creator and with each other. We can recover a completeness that was once lost but is restored in the gospel. Experience peace with God as you meditate on this important theme of Scripture. In this journey, you will find the encouragement you need to live out of the wholeness you have in Christ—and be equipped to share that peace with others.
