2 KINGS 17:41 - THE CYCLE BREAKER
Do you ever feel like you are just going through the motions with God? Sometimes we treat God like another thing to check off our list. Go to church, sing the songs, listen to the sermon. Check, check, and check.
2 Kings 17:41 says that even while God’s people were worshiping the Lord, they were serving their idols. They were going through the motions, but their heart wasn’t in it. As we’ve been reading about the kings of the Old Testament, we’ve seen king after king who ruled over God’s people but did not rule with God’s heart.
The second part of this verse explains that the children and grandchildren continued to do as their parents did. Generations of the Jewish people missed out on God’s best for them because they chose to continue the dead-end cycle of idolatry instead of repentance from that idolatry. The good news is the King that we have needed has come in the person of Jesus Christ. Only a King who is without blemish and therefore the perfect sacrifice for our sin can undo its cycle.
Through Christ, we have the chance to change our family tree and the sinful habits that course through its roots. The only legacy that matters for our children and grandchildren is the cherishing of this Servant King!
God, give us the courage to serve you with all of our heart and redeem our family tree. Help our sight to remain steadfast on you and your desires for our life. Help us not to grow weary in doing good but to be renewed in you. Amen.
Family Connection: This week, discuss as a family about patterns we can easily fall into that are not good for us, whether it is failing to brush our teeth or always feeling angry when our teacher corrects us. Discuss ways we can change the way we respond to things we don’t like. Challenge each other to do so this week.
