Unlawful Sexual Relations
1Then#Or “And” Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 2“Speak to the Israelites,#Literally “sons/children of Israel” and say to them, ‘I am Yahweh your God. 3You must not carry out#Literally “do” the practices of the land of Egypt, in which you lived, and you must not carry out#Literally “do” the practices of the land of Canaan, to which I am bringing you; and you must not follow their statutes. 4You must carry out#Literally “do” my regulations, and you must observe#Or “keep” my statutes by following them; I am Yahweh your God. 5And you shall observe#Or “keep” my statutes and my regulations by which the person doing them shall live;#Literally “which the man does them and he shall live in them” I am Yahweh.
6“ ‘None#Literally “a man a man … not” of you shall approach anyone who is his close relative#Literally “the flesh of his body” to expose nakedness; I am Yahweh. 7You must not expose your father’s nakedness or#Or “and” your mother’s nakedness—she is your mother; you must not expose her nakedness. 8You must not expose the nakedness of your father’s wife—it is your father’s nakedness. 9As for your sister’s nakedness, whether your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whether born at home#Literally “a relative of house” or born abroad,#Literally “a relative of an outside place” you must not expose their nakedness. 10As for the nakedness of your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, you must not expose their nakedness, because they are your nakedness. 11As for the nakedness of the daughter of your father’s wife, she is your sister, a relative of your father; you must not expose her nakedness. 12You must not expose the nakedness of your father’s sister; she is your father’s close relative.#Literally “the flesh of your father” 13You must not expose the nakedness of your mother’s sister, because she is your mother’s close relative.#Literally “the flesh of your mother” 14You must not expose the nakedness of your father’s brother; you must not have sex with#Literally “approach” his wife—she is your aunt. 15You must not expose your daughter-in-law’s nakedness; she is your son’s wife; you must not expose her nakedness. 16You must not expose the nakedness of your brother’s wife; she is your brother’s nakedness. 17You must not expose the nakedness of a woman and her daughter, or her son’s daughter, or her daughter’s daughter; you must not take her as wife#The verb לקח is used to speak of marrying (“taking a wife”) to expose her nakedness; they are close relatives#Literally “flesh”; see vv. 6, 12, 13—that is wickedness. 18And you must not take as wife#The verb לקח is used to speak of marrying (“taking a wife”) a woman with her sister, to be a rival-wife, to expose her nakedness before her during#Literally “in” her life.
19“ ‘And you must not have sex with#Literally “approach” a woman to expose her nakedness during#Literally “in” her menstrual uncleanness. 20And you must not have sex#Literally “you shall not give your lying down for semen” with your fellow citizen’s#Or “neighbor’s” wife, becoming unclean with her.
21“ ‘And you shall not give any of#Literally “from” your offspring#Or “descendants” in order to sacrifice them to Molech, nor#Or “and not” shall you profane the name of your God; I am Yahweh. 22And you shall not lie with a male as lying with#Literally “of” a woman; that is a detestable thing. 23And you shall not have sexual relations#Literally “give your lying down” with any animal, becoming unclean with it; and a woman shall not stand before#Literally “to the faces of” an animal to copulate with it—that is a perversion.
24“ ‘You must not make yourself unclean in any of these things, because the nations whom I am driving out from your presence were made unclean by all of these. 25So#Or “And” the land became unclean, and I have brought the punishment of#Literally “I have visited” its guilt upon it, and the land has vomited out its inhabitants. 26But#Or “And” you (neither the native nor#Or “and” the alien who is dwelling in your midst) shall keep my statutes and my regulations, and you shall not practice#Literally “do” any of these detestable things 27(because the people of the land, who were before you,#Literally “to the faces of you” did all these detestable things, so the land became unclean), 28so that the land will not vomit you out when you make it unclean just as it vomited out the nation that was before you.#Literally “to the faces of you” 29Indeed, anyone who does any of these detestable things, even#Or “and” those persons who do so shall be cut off from the midst of their people. 30Thus#Or “And” you shall keep my obligation to not do any of the statutes regarding#Literally “of” the detestable things that they did before you,#Literally “to the faces of you” so that you will not make yourselves unclean by them; I am Yahweh your God.’ ”

Forbidden Sexual Practices
1The Lord told Moses 2to say to the people of Israel, “I am the Lord your God. 3Do not follow the practices of the people of Egypt, where you once lived, or of the people in the land of Canaan, where I am now taking you. 4Obey my laws and do what I command. I am the Lord your God. 5#Ne 9.29; Ez 18.9; 20.11-13; Lk 10.28; Ro 10.5; Ga 3.12 Follow the practices and the laws that I give you; you will save your life by doing so. I am the Lord.”
6The Lord gave the following regulations. Do not have sexual intercourse with any of your relatives. 7Do not disgrace your father by having intercourse with your mother. You must not disgrace your own mother. 8#Lv 20.11; Dt 22.30; 27.20 Do not disgrace your father by having intercourse with any of his other wives. 9#Lv 20.17; Dt 27.22 Do not have intercourse with your sister or your stepsister, whether or not she was brought up in the same house with you. 10Do not have intercourse with your granddaughter; that would be a disgrace to you. 11Do not have intercourse with a half sister; she, too, is your sister. 12-13#Lv 20.19,20 Do not have intercourse with an aunt, whether she is your father's sister or your mother's sister. 14Do not have intercourse with your uncle's wife; she, too, is your aunt. 15#Lv 20.12 Do not have intercourse with your daughter-in-law 16#Lv 20.21 or with your brother's wife. 17#Lv 20.14; Dt 27.23 Do not have intercourse with the daughter or granddaughter of a woman with whom you have had intercourse; they may be related to you, and that would be incest. 18Do not take your wife's sister as one of your wives, as long as your wife is living.

Do not have intercourse with a woman during her monthly period, because she is ritually unclean. 20#Lv 20.10 Do not have intercourse with another man's wife; that would make you ritually unclean. 21#Lv 20.1-5 Do not hand over any of your children to be used in the worship of the god Molech, because that would bring disgrace on the name of God, the Lord. 22#Lv 20.13 No man is to have sexual relations with another man; God hates that. 23#Ex 22.19; Lv 20.15,16; Dt 27.21 No man or woman is to have sexual relations with an animal; that perversion makes you ritually unclean.
24Do not make yourselves unclean by any of these acts, for that is how the pagans made themselves unclean, those pagans who lived in the land before you and whom the Lord is driving out so that you can go in. 25Their actions made the land unclean, and so the Lord is punishing the land and making it reject the people who lived there. 26-27They did all these disgusting things and made the land unclean, but you must not do them. All of you, whether Israelites or foreigners living with you, must keep the Lord's laws and commands, 28and then the land will not reject you, as it rejected the pagans who lived there before you. 29You know that whoever does any of these disgusting things will no longer be considered one of God's people.
30And the Lord said, “Obey the commands I give and do not follow the practices of the people who lived in the land before you, and do not make yourselves unclean by doing any of these things. I am the Lord your God.”
