1 And then,#Literally “And it was” when Jeremiah had finished speaking to all the people all the words of Yahweh their God, for which Yahweh their God had sent him to them with all these words, 2Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the insolent men spoke,#The Hebrew verb is singular saying to Jeremiah, “You are telling a lie! Yahweh our God did not send you, saying,#Literally “to say” ‘You must not go to Egypt to dwell as aliens there.’ 3But Baruch the son of Neriah is inciting you against us in order to give us into the hand of the Chaldeans, to kill us and to deport us to Babylon.”
4So Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies, and all the people did not listen#The Hebrew verb is singular to the voice of Yahweh to stay in the land of Judah. 5But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies took#The Hebrew verb is singular all the remnant of Judah who had returned from all the nations to which they had been scattered to dwell as aliens in the land of Judah— 6the men, and the women, and the little children, and the daughters of the king, and everyone#Literally “all of the person” whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard#Hebrew “guards” had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah— 7and they came into the land of Egypt, for they did not listen to the voice of Yahweh. The Throne of Nebuchadnezzar Will be Set Up at Tahpanhes
8And the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying, 9“Take in your hands#Hebrew “hand” large stones and bury them in the mortar in the clay floor that is at the entrance of the palace#Or “house” of Pharaoh in Tahpanhes before the eyes of the people#Or “men” of the Judeans, 10and say to them, ‘Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: “Look, I am going to send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden. And he will spread out his canopy over them. 11And he will come and ravage the land of Egypt, and deliver those who are appointed for the plague, to the plague, and those who are appointed for the captivity, to the captivity, and those who are appointed for the sword, to the sword. 12Then he will kindle a fire in the temples#Literally “houses” of the gods of Egypt, and he will burn them and take them captive. And he will wrap up the land of Egypt just as the shepherd wraps up his cloak. And he will go forth from there in peace. 13And he will break the stone pillars of Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt. And he will burn the temples#Literally “houses” of the gods of Egypt with fire.” ’ ”

Taken to Egypt, Jeremiah Warns of Judgment
1When Jeremiah finished speaking to all the people all these words of the Lord their God, with which the Lord their God had sent him to them, 2Azariah son of Hoshaiah and Johanan son of Kareah and all the other insolent men said to Jeremiah, “You are telling a lie. The Lord our God did not send you to say, ‘Do not go to Egypt to settle there’; 3but Baruch son of Neriah is inciting you against us, to hand us over to the Chaldeans, in order that they may kill us or take us into exile in Babylon.” 4So Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces and all the people did not obey the voice of the Lord, to stay in the land of Judah. 5But Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took all the remnant of Judah who had returned to settle in the land of Judah from all the nations to which they had been driven— 6the men, the women, the children, the princesses, and everyone whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of Shaphan; also the prophet Jeremiah and Baruch son of Neriah. 7And they came into the land of Egypt, for they did not obey the voice of the Lord. And they arrived at Tahpanhes.
8Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes: 9Take some large stones in your hands, and bury them in the clay pavement#43.9 Meaning of Heb uncertain that is at the entrance to Pharaoh's palace in Tahpanhes. Let the Judeans see you do it, 10and say to them, Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: I am going to send and take my servant King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon, and he#43.10 Gk Syr: Heb I will set his throne above these stones that I have buried, and he will spread his royal canopy over them. 11He shall come and ravage the land of Egypt, giving
those who are destined for pestilence, to pestilence,
and those who are destined for captivity, to captivity,
and those who are destined for the sword, to the sword.
12He#43.12 Gk Syr Vg: Heb I shall kindle a fire in the temples of the gods of Egypt; and he shall burn them and carry them away captive; and he shall pick clean the land of Egypt, as a shepherd picks his cloak clean of vermin; and he shall depart from there safely. 13He shall break the obelisks of Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt; and the temples of the gods of Egypt he shall burn with fire.
