1 And then,#Literally “And it was” when Jeremiah had finished speaking to all the people all the words of Yahweh their God, for which Yahweh their God had sent him to them with all these words, 2Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the insolent men spoke,#The Hebrew verb is singular saying to Jeremiah, “You are telling a lie! Yahweh our God did not send you, saying,#Literally “to say” ‘You must not go to Egypt to dwell as aliens there.’ 3But Baruch the son of Neriah is inciting you against us in order to give us into the hand of the Chaldeans, to kill us and to deport us to Babylon.”
4So Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies, and all the people did not listen#The Hebrew verb is singular to the voice of Yahweh to stay in the land of Judah. 5But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies took#The Hebrew verb is singular all the remnant of Judah who had returned from all the nations to which they had been scattered to dwell as aliens in the land of Judah— 6the men, and the women, and the little children, and the daughters of the king, and everyone#Literally “all of the person” whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard#Hebrew “guards” had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah— 7and they came into the land of Egypt, for they did not listen to the voice of Yahweh. And they came up to Tahpanhes.
The Throne of Nebuchadnezzar Will be Set Up at Tahpanhes
8And the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying, 9“Take in your hands#Hebrew “hand” large stones and bury them in the mortar in the clay floor that is at the entrance of the palace#Or “house” of Pharaoh in Tahpanhes before the eyes of the people#Or “men” of the Judeans, 10and say to them, ‘Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel: “Look, I am going to send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden. And he will spread out his canopy over them. 11And he will come and ravage the land of Egypt, and deliver those who are appointed for the plague, to the plague, and those who are appointed for the captivity, to the captivity, and those who are appointed for the sword, to the sword. 12Then he will kindle a fire in the temples#Literally “houses” of the gods of Egypt, and he will burn them and take them captive. And he will wrap up the land of Egypt just as the shepherd wraps up his cloak. And he will go forth from there in peace. 13And he will break the stone pillars of Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt. And he will burn the temples#Literally “houses” of the gods of Egypt with fire.” ’ ”

In Egypt Jeremiah Warns of Judgment
1Now it happened when Jeremiah, whom the Lord their God had sent, had finished telling all the people all the words of the Lord their God—that is, all these words— 2Azariah the son of Hoshaiah and Johanan the son of Kareah and all the proud and insolent men said to Jeremiah, “You are not telling the truth! The Lord our God has not sent you to say, ‘Do not go into Egypt to live there.’ 3But Baruch the son of Neriah is inciting you against us to hand us over to the Chaldeans, so they may [either] put us to death or exile us to Babylon.” 4So Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces and all the people disobeyed the voice of the Lord [which told them] to stay in the land of Judah. 5But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took all the remnant of Judah who had returned to live in the land of Judah from all the nations to which they had been driven— 6the men, women, and children, the king’s daughters (ladies of the court), and every person whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan; he also took Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch the son of Neriah. 7So they entered the land of Egypt (for they did not obey the voice of the Lord) and they went in as far as #See note 2:16.Tahpanhes.
8Then came the word of the Lord to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying, 9“Take some large stones in your hands and hide them in the mortar in the brickwork [of the terrace] which is at the entrance of Pharaoh’s #A secondary palace.house in Tahpanhes, in the sight of some of the men of Judah; 10and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “Behold, I am going to send and get #See note 21:2.Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant, and I am going to set his throne over these stones that I have hidden; and his [majestic, royal] canopy will be spread over them. 11He will also come and #Nebuchadnezzar invaded Egypt in 568-567 b.c. during the reign of Pharaoh Amasis.strike the land of Egypt, giving those who are [destined] for death, to death, and those who are [destined] for captivity, to captivity, and those who are [destined] for the sword, to the sword. 12And [through him] I will set fire to the temples of the gods of Egypt, and he will burn them and take them (Egyptian idols) captive. He will wrap himself with the land of Egypt as a shepherd wraps himself with his garment, and he will go away from there safely. 13Nebuchadnezzar will also break the images and shatter the obelisks of #Heb Beth-shemesh; i.e. the house of the sun-god. The site was famous for its tall (70’) “sacred” pillars.Heliopolis in the land of Egypt; and he will burn down the temples of the gods of Egypt.” ’ ”
