Acts 1

The Preface
1 I produced the former account, O Theophilus, about all that#Literally “of what” Jesus began to do and to teach, 2until the day he was taken up, after he#*Here “after” is supplied as a component of the participle (“had given orders”) which is understood as temporal had given orders through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen, 3to whom he also presented himself alive after he suffered, with many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking the things about the kingdom of God. 4And while he#*Here “while” is supplied as a component of the participle (“was with”) which is understood as temporal was with#Or “was assembling with,” or “was sharing a meal with” them,#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation he commanded them, “Do not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for what was promised by the Father, which you heard about from me. 5For John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”#Literally “not many days after these”

6So when#*Here “when” is supplied as a component of the participle (“had come together”) which is understood as temporal they had come together, they began asking#*The imperfect tense has been translated as ingressive here (“began asking”) him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time you are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” 7But he said to them, “It is not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when#*Here “when” is supplied as a component of the temporal genitive absolute participle (“has come”) the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the farthest part of the earth.” 9And after he#*Here “after” is supplied as a component of the participle (“had said”) which is understood as temporal had said these things, while#*Here “while” is supplied as a component of the temporal genitive absolute participle (“were watching”) they were watching, he was taken up, and a cloud received him from their sight. 10And as they were staring into the sky while#*Here “while” is supplied as a component of the temporal genitive absolute participle (“was departing”) he was departing, behold, two men in white clothing stood by them 11who also said, “Men of Galilee,#Literally “Galileans” why do you stand there looking#Some manuscripts have “gazing” into the sky? This Jesus who was taken up from you into heaven like this will come back in the same way you saw him departing into heaven!”
Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas
12Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mountain that is called Olive Grove#This is a variation of the name “Mount of Olives” which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away.#Literally “having a journey of a Sabbath” 13And when they had entered, they went up to the upstairs room where they were staying—Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas son of James. 14All these were busily engaged with one mind in prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus and with#Some manuscripts omit “with” his brothers.
15And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the brothers (and it was a crowd of persons of about one hundred twenty at the same place) and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“stood up”) has been translated as a finite verb said, 16“Men and brothers, it was necessary that the scripture be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit proclaimed beforehand through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus, 17because he was counted among us and received a share in this ministry.” 18(Now this man acquired a field for the wages of his wickedness, and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his intestines spilled out. 19And it became known to all who live in Jerusalem, so that that field was called in their own language#That is, Aramaic “Akeldama,” that is, “Field of Blood.”) 20“For it is written in the book of Psalms,
‘Let his residence become deserted,
and let there be no one to live in it,’#A quotation from Ps 69:25
and,
‘Let another person take his position.’#A quotation from Ps 109:8
21Therefore it is necessary for one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time in which the Lord Jesus went in and went out among us, 22beginning from the baptism of John until the day on which he was taken up from us—one of these men must become a witness of his resurrection together with us.” 23And they proposed two men, Joseph called Barsabbas (who was called Justus) and Matthias. 24And they prayed and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“prayed”) has been translated as a finite verb said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show clearly which one of these two you have chosen 25to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to depart to his own place.” 26And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was added to serve#*The words “to serve” are not in the Greek text, but are implied with the eleven apostles.

Luke Writes Another Book
1To Theophilus.
The first book I wrote was about everything Jesus began to do and teach 2until the day he was taken up into heaven. Before this, with the help of the Holy Spirit, Jesus told the apostles he had chosen what they should do. 3After his death, he showed himself to them and proved in many ways that he was alive. The apostles saw Jesus during the forty days after he was raised from the dead, and he spoke to them about the kingdom of God. 4Once when he was eating with them, he told them not to leave Jerusalem. He said, “Wait here to receive the promise from the Father which I told you about. 5John baptized people with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
Jesus Is Taken Up into Heaven
6When the apostles were all together, they asked Jesus, “Lord, are you now going to give the kingdom back to Israel?”
7Jesus said to them, “The Father is the only One who has the authority to decide dates and times. These things are not for you to know. 8But when the Holy Spirit comes to you, you will receive power. You will be my witnesses—in Jerusalem, in all of Judea, in Samaria, and in every part of the world.”
9After he said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud hid him from their sight. 10As he was going, they were looking into the sky. Suddenly, two men wearing white clothes stood beside them. 11They said, “Men of Galilee, why are you standing here looking into the sky? Jesus, whom you saw taken up from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you saw him go.”
A New Apostle Is Chosen
12Then they went back to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives. (This mountain is about half a mile from Jerusalem.) 13When they entered the city, they went to the upstairs room where they were staying. Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon (known as the Zealot), and Judas son of James were there. 14They all continued praying together with some women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and Jesus’ brothers.
15During this time there was a meeting of the believers (about one hundred twenty of them). Peter stood up and said, 16-17“Brothers and sisters, in the Scriptures the Holy Spirit said through David something that must happen involving Judas. He was one of our own group and served together with us. He led those who arrested Jesus.” 18(Judas bought a field with the money he got for his evil act. But he fell to his death, his body burst open, and all his intestines poured out. 19Everyone in Jerusalem learned about this so they named this place Akeldama. In their language Akeldama means “Field of Blood.”) 20“In the Book of Psalms,” Peter said, “this is written:
‘May his place be empty;
leave no one to live in it.’#Psalm 69:25
And it is also written:
‘Let another man replace him as leader.’#Psalm 109:8
21-22“So now a man must become a witness with us of Jesus’ being raised from the dead. He must be one of the men who were part of our group during all the time the Lord Jesus was among us—from the time John was baptizing people until the day Jesus was taken up from us to heaven.”
23They put the names of two men before the group. One was Joseph Barsabbas, who was also called Justus. The other was Matthias. 24-25The apostles prayed, “Lord, you know the thoughts of everyone. Show us which one of these two you have chosen to do this work. Show us who should be an apostle in place of Judas, who turned away and went where he belongs.” 26Then they used lots to choose between them, and the lots showed that Matthias was the one. So he became an apostle with the other eleven.
