Jonah 2
2
1And Jonah prayeth unto Jehovah his God from the bowels of the fish.
2And he saith: I called, because of my distress, to Jehovah, And He doth answer me, From the belly of sheol I have cried, Thou hast heard my voice.
3When Thou dost cast me [into] the deep, Into the heart of the seas, Then the flood doth compass me, All Thy breakers and Thy billows have passed over me.
4And I — I said: I have been cast out from before Thine eyes, (Yet I add to look unto Thy holy temple!)
5Compassed me have waters unto the soul, The deep doth compass me, The weed is bound to my head.
6To the cuttings of mountains I have come down, The earth, her bars [are] behind me to the age. And Thou bringest up from the pit my life, O Jehovah my God.
7In the feebleness within me of my soul Jehovah I have remembered, And come in unto Thee doth my prayer, Unto Thy holy temple.
8Those observing lying vanities their own mercy forsake.
9And I — with a voice of thanksgiving — I sacrifice to Thee, That which I have vowed I complete, Salvation [is] of Jehovah.
10And Jehovah saith to the fish, and it vomiteth out Jonah on the dry land.

Jonah's Prayer
1From deep inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God:
2“In my distress, O LORD, I called to you,
and you answered me.
From deep in the world of the dead
I cried for help, and you heard me.
3You threw me down into the depths,
to the very bottom of the sea,
where the waters were all round me,
and all your mighty waves rolled over me.
4I thought I had been banished from your presence
and would never see your holy Temple again.
5The water came over me and choked me;
the sea covered me completely,
and seaweed was wrapped round my head.
6I went down to the very roots of the mountains,
into the land whose gates lock shut for ever.#2.6 the land whose gates lock shut for ever: A reference to the world of the dead (see 2.2).
But you, O LORD my God,
brought me back from the depths alive.
7When I felt my life slipping away,
then, O LORD, I prayed to you,
and in your holy Temple you heard me.
8Those who worship worthless idols
have abandoned their loyalty to you.
9But I will sing praises to you;
I will offer you a sacrifice
and do what I have promised.
Salvation comes from the LORD!”
10Then the LORD ordered the fish to spew Jonah up on the beach, and it did.
