The First Seal on the Scroll
1Then I saw # Lit saw when the Lamb open one of the seven # Other mss omit seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures say with a voice like thunder, # Rv 14:2; 19:6 “Come! ” # Other mss add and see # Or Go! 2I looked, and there was a white horse. # Zch 6:1-3; Rv 19:11 The horseman on it had a bow; # Zch 9:13-14 a crown # Rv 14:14 was given to him, and he went out as a victor to conquer. # Lit went out conquering and in order to conquer
The Second Seal
3When He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come! ” # Other mss add and see # Or Go! 4Then another horse went out, a fiery red one, # Zch 1:8; 6:2 and its horseman was empowered # Or was granted ; lit was given to take peace from the earth, so that people would slaughter one another. And a large sword was given to him. # Mt 10:34
The Third Seal
5When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come! ” # Other mss add and see # Or Go! And I looked, and there was a black horse. # Zch 6:2,6 The horseman on it had a set of scales in his hand. # 1Sm 2:3; Jb 6:2; 31:6; Ps 62:9; Pr 16:2 6Then I heard something like a voice among the four living creatures say, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius # 2Kg 6:25; 7:1 — but do not harm the olive oil and the wine.” # Rv 7:3; 9:4
The Fourth Seal
7When He opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come! ” # Other mss add and see # Or Go! 8And I looked, and there was a pale green # Or a greenish gray horse. The Fifth Seal
9When He opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the people # Lit souls slaughtered because of God’s word and the testimony they had. # Other mss add about the Lamb # Rv 1:2,9; 12:17; 19:10; 20:4 10They cried out with a loud voice: “Lord, # Or Master the One who is holy and true, # Rv 3:7 how long until You judge and avenge our blood from those who live on the earth? # Dt 32:43; Ps 79:10; 119:84; Rv 19:2 ” 11So a white robe was given to each of them, and they were told to rest a little while longer until the number would be completed of their fellow slaves and their brothers, who were going to be killed just as they had been.
The Sixth Seal
12Then I saw Him open # Lit I saw when He opened the sixth seal. A violent earthquake occurred; # Rv 11:13; 16:18 the sun turned black like sackcloth # Is 50:3; 13:10; Joel 2:10; 3:15; Matt. 24:29 made of goat hair; the entire moon # Or the full moon became like blood; # Jl 2:31; Ac 2:20 13the stars # Perhaps meteors of heaven fell to the earth as a fig tree drops its unripe figs when shaken by a high wind; 14the sky separated like a scroll being rolled up; # Is 34:4 and every mountain and island was moved from its place. # Ezk 38:20; Nah 1:5; Rv 16:20
