Purification after Childbirth

1The Lord spoke to Moses: 2“Tell the Israelites: When a woman becomes pregnant and gives birth to a male child, # Lv 10:14 she will be unclean seven days, as she is during the days of her menstrual impurity. # Lv 15:19 3The flesh of his foreskin # Ex 4:25 must be circumcised # Gn 34:14 on the eighth day. # Gn 17:12-13; 21:4; Lk 2:21; Gl 3:5; 5:6; 6:15 4She will continue in purification # Lv 14:2 from her bleeding # Lk 8:43 for 33 days. She must not touch any holy thing or go into the sanctuary until completing her days of purification. 5But if she gives birth to a female child, she will be unclean for two weeks as she is during her menstrual impurity. She will continue in purification from her bleeding for 66 days.

6“When her days of purification are complete, whether for a son or daughter, she is to bring to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting a year-old male lamb for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon or a turtledove for a sin # Or purification offering. 7He will present them before the Lord and make atonement on her behalf; she will be clean from her discharge of blood. This is the law for a woman giving birth, whether to a male or female. 8But if she doesn’t have sufficient means # Lit if her hand cannot obtain what is sufficient # Lv 14:21 for a sheep, she may take two turtledoves or two young pigeons, # Lk 2:24 one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin # Or purification offering. Then the priest will make atonement on her behalf, and she will be clean.”

The Purification of Women after Childbirth

1The Lord gave Moses the following regulations 2for the people of Israel. For seven days after a woman gives birth to a son, she is ritually unclean, as she is during her monthly period. 3#Gn 17.12; Lk 2.21 On the eighth day, the child shall be circumcised. 4Then it will be thirty-three more days until she is ritually clean from her loss of blood; she must not touch anything that is holy or enter the sacred Tent until the time of her purification is completed.

5For fourteen days after a woman gives birth to a daughter, she is ritually unclean, as she is during her monthly period. Then it will be sixty-six more days until she is ritually clean from her loss of blood.

6When the time of her purification is completed, whether for a son or daughter, she shall bring to the priest at the entrance of the Tent of the Lord's presence a one-year-old lamb for a burnt offering and a pigeon or a dove for a sin offering. 7The priest shall present her offering to the Lord and perform the ritual to take away her impurity, and she will be ritually clean. This, then, is what a woman must do after giving birth.

8 # Lk 2.24 If the woman cannot afford a lamb, she shall bring two doves or two pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering, and the priest shall perform the ritual to take away her impurity, and she will be ritually clean.
