Jeremiah’s Counsel Rejected
1When Jeremiah had finished speaking to all the people all the words of the Lord their God — all these words the Lord their God had sent him to give them — 2then Azariah # = Jezaniah son of Hoshaiah, # Jr 42:1 Johanan son of Kareah, and all the other arrogant men responded to Jeremiah, “You are speaking a lie! The Lord our God has not sent you to say, ‘You must not go to Egypt to live there for a while! ’ 3Rather, Baruch son of Neriah is inciting you against us to hand us over to the Chaldeans to put us to death or to deport us to Babylon! ”
4So Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies did not obey the voice of the Lord to stay in the land of Judah. 5Instead, Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies took the whole remnant of Judah, # Jr 40:11-12 those who had returned from all the nations where they had been banished to live in the land of Judah for a while — 6the men, women, children, king’s daughters, and everyone whom Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, had allowed to remain with Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of Shaphan, # Jr 39:10; 40:7 along with Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah — 7and they went to the land of Egypt because they did not obey the voice of the Lord. They went as far as Tahpanhes. # Jr 2:16; 44:1; 46:14
God’s Sign to the People in Egypt
8Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah at Tahpanhes: 9“Pick up some large stones and set them in the mortar of the brick pavement that is at the opening of Pharaoh’s palace at Tahpanhes. Do this in the sight of the Judean men 10and tell them: This is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: I will send for My servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and I will place his throne on these stones that I have embedded, and he will pitch his pavilion over them. 11He will come and strike down the land of Egypt # Jr 44:13; 46:13-26 — those destined for death, to death; those destined for captivity, to captivity; and those destined for the sword, # Jr 15:2 to the sword. 12I # LXX, Syr, Vg read He will kindle a fire in the temples of Egypt’s gods, # Ex 12:12; Is 19:1; Jr 46:25; Ezk 30:13 and he will burn them and take them prisoner. He will clean the land of Egypt as a shepherd picks lice off # Or will wrap himself in the land of Egypt as a shepherd wraps himself in his garment, # Ps 104:2; Is 49:18 and he will leave there unscathed. 13He will smash the sacred pillars of the sun temple # Or Beth-shemesh # = of Heliopolis in the land of Egypt and burn down the temples of the Egyptian gods.”

Chaldeans Invade Egypt
1But when Jeremiah had made an end of telling all the people all the words of Adonai their God—all these words for which Adonai their God had sent him to them—
2then Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and all the insolent men responded, saying to Jeremiah: “You are telling a lie! Adonai our God has not sent you to say. ‘You must not go to Egypt to sojourn there.’
3Rather, Baruch son of Neriah is inciting you against us, to give us over into the hand of the Chaldeans, so they may put us to death or carry us away as captives to Babylon!”
4So Johanan son of Kareah, all the commanders of the forces and all the people, did not obey the voice of Adonai, to stay in the land of Judah.
5But Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took the entire remnant of Judah who had returned from all the nations where they had been driven to dwell in the land of Judah—
6the men, the women, the children, the king’s daughters, everyone that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of Shaphan, as well as Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah—
7and they went to the land of Egypt. For they did not obey the voice of Adonai. When they arrived at Tahpanhes
8the word of Adonai came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying,
9“Take some large stones in your hand and hide them in the mortar in the brickwork at the entrance of Pharaoh’s palace in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah.
10Then say to them, thus says Adonai-Tzva’ot, the God of Israel: “I am about to send for and bring King Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, My servant, and I will set his throne over these stones where I have hid, and he will spread his royal pavilion over them.
11Yes, he will come, and will strike the land of Egypt. Those for death—to death! Those for exile—to exile! Those for the sword—to the sword!
12“I will also set fire to the houses of Egypt’s gods. He will burn them and carry them off. He will wrap himself up with the land of Egypt as a shepherd wraps himself up with his garment. Then he will depart from there victoriously.
13“He will also shatter the pillars of the temple of the sun in the land of Egypt, while houses of the gods of Egypt He will burn with fire.”
