Abraham’s Other Wife and Sons

1Now Abraham had taken another wife, whose name was Keturah, # 1Ch 1:32-33 2and she bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. 3Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. Dedan’s sons were the Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. 4And Midian’s sons were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were sons of Keturah. 5Abraham gave everything he owned to Isaac. # Gn 24:35-36 6And Abraham gave gifts to the sons of his concubines, but while he was still alive he sent them eastward, away from his son Isaac, to the land of the East. # Gn 21:14

Abraham’s Death

7This is the length of Abraham’s life: # Lit And these are the days of the years of the lives of Abraham that he lived 175 years. 8He took his last breath and died at a ripe old age, # Gn 15:15; 47:8-9 old and contented, # Sam, LXX, Syr read full of days and he was gathered to his people. # Gn 25:17; 35:29; 49:29,33 9His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah # Gn 23:17-18; 49:29-30; 50:13 near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite. 10This was the field that Abraham bought from the Hittites. # Gn 23:16; 50:13 Abraham was buried there with his wife Sarah. 11After Abraham’s death, God blessed his son Isaac, who lived near Beer-lahai-roi. # Gn 16:14; 24:62

Ishmael’s Family Records

12These are the family records # Gn 2:4; 25:19 of Abraham’s son Ishmael, # 1Ch 1:29-31 whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s slave, bore to Abraham. 13These are the names of Ishmael’s sons; their names according to the family records are: Nebaioth, Ishmael’s firstborn, then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. 16These are Ishmael’s sons, and these are their names by their villages and encampments: 12 leaders # Or chieftains # Gn 17:20 of their clans. # Or peoples 17This is the length # Lit And these are the years of Ishmael’s life: 137 years. The Birth of Jacob and Esau

19These are the family records of Isaac son of Abraham. two people will come from you and be separated.

24When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins in her womb. 25The first one came out red-looking, # In Hb, the word red-looking sounds like “Edom”; Gn 32:3. covered with hair # In Hb, the word hair sounds like “Seir”; Gn 32:3. like a fur coat, and they named him Esau. # Gn 27:11,16,23 26After this, his brother came out grasping Esau’s heel with his hand. # Hs 12:3 So he was named Jacob. # = He Grasps the Heel # Gn 27:36 Isaac was 60 years old when they were born.

Esau Sells His Birthright

27When the boys grew up, Esau became an expert hunter, an outdoorsman, # Lit a man of the field but Jacob was a quiet man who stayed at home. # Lit man living in tents 28Isaac loved Esau because he had a taste for wild game, but Rebekah loved Jacob. # Gn 27:4-9

29Once when Jacob was cooking a stew, Esau came in from the field exhausted. 30He said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stuff, because I’m exhausted.” That is why he was also named Edom. # = Red

31Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.”

32“Look,” said Esau, “I’m about to die, so what good is a birthright to me? ”

33Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore to Jacob and sold his birthright to him. 34Then Jacob gave bread and lentil stew to Esau; he ate, drank, got up, and went away. So Esau despised his birthright. # Heb 12:16-17

Abraham’s Death and His Descendants

7These are the days of the years of Abraham’s life, 175 years. 8Abraham #ver. 17; ch. 35:29; 49:33 breathed his last and #ch. 15:15died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people. 9Isaac and Ishmael #ch. 35:29his sons buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, east of Mamre, 10the field #ch. 23:16; 50:13 that Abraham purchased from the Hittites. #ch. 49:30, 31There Abraham was buried, with Sarah his wife. 11After the death of Abraham, God blessed Isaac his son. The Birth of Esau and Jacob

19These are the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: #Matt. 1:2Abraham fathered Isaac, 20and Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, #ch. 22:23 the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of #See ch. 28:2 Paddan-aram, #ch. 24:29the sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife. 21And Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was barren. And #2 Sam. 21:14; 24:25; 1 Chr. 5:20; 2 Chr. 33:13; Ezra 8:23the Lord granted his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived. 22The children struggled together within her, and she said, “If it is thus, why is this happening to me?”#25:22 Or why do I live? So she went #[1 Sam. 9:9]to inquire of the Lord. 23And the Lord said to her,

24When her days to give birth were completed, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25The first came out red, #ch. 27:11, 16, 23all his body like a hairy cloak, so they called his name Esau. 26Afterward his brother came out with #Hos. 12:3 his hand holding Esau’s heel, so #ch. 27:36his name was called Jacob.#25:26 Jacob means He takes by the heel, or He cheats Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.

27When the boys grew up, Esau was #ch. 27:3, 5 a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man, #Heb. 11:9dwelling in tents. 28Isaac loved Esau because #ch. 27:4, 7, 9he ate of his game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.

Esau Sells His Birthright
