Israel’s King Jehoahaz
1In the twenty-third year of Judah’s King Joash # 2Kg 12:1 son of Ahaziah, Jehoahaz # 2Kg 10:35 son of Jehu became king over Israel in Samaria and reigned 17 years. 2He did what was evil in the Lord’s sight and followed the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit; he did not turn away from them. # 1Kg 12:26-33 3So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel, # Dt 31:17; Jdg 2:14 and He surrendered them to the power of Hazael # 2Kg 8:12; 12:17 king of Aram and his son Ben-hadad # 2Kg 13:24-25 during their reigns.
4Then Jehoahaz sought the Lord’s favor, and the Lord heard him, for He saw the oppression the king of Aram inflicted on Israel. # Ex 3:7-9; Nm 21:7-9; 2Kg 14:26 5Therefore, the Lord gave Israel a deliverer, # Jdg 2:18; 2Kg 13:25; 14:25,27 and they escaped from the power of the Arameans. Then the people of Israel dwelt in their tents as before, 6but they didn’t turn away from the sins that the house of Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit. Jehoahaz walked in them, # 2Kg 13:2 and the Asherah pole also remained standing in Samaria. 7Jehoahaz did not have an army left, except for 50 horsemen, 10 chariots, and 10,000 foot soldiers, because the king of Aram had destroyed them, # 2Kg 10:32-33 making them like dust at threshing. # Am 1:3
8The rest of the events of Jehoahaz’s reign, along with all his accomplishments and his might, are written in the Historical Record of Israel’s Kings. # 2Kg 1:17-18; 10:34-36 9Jehoahaz rested with his fathers, and he was buried in Samaria. His son Jehoash # Lit Joash became king in his place.
Israel’s King Jehoash
10In the thirty-seventh year of Judah’s King Joash, Jehoash son of Jehoahaz became king over Israel in Samaria and reigned 16 years. 11He did what was evil in the Lord’s sight. He did not turn away from all the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit, but he walked in them. # 1Kg 12:28-33
12The rest of the events of Jehoash’s reign, along with all his accomplishments and the power he had to wage war against Judah’s King Amaziah, # 2Kg 14:15-16 are written in the Historical Record of Israel’s Kings. 13Jehoash rested with his fathers, and Jeroboam # 2Kg 14:23 sat on his throne. Jehoash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.
Elisha’s Death
14When Elisha became sick with the illness that he died from, Jehoash king of Israel went down and wept over him and said, “My father, my father, the chariots and horsemen of Israel! ” # 2Kg 2:12
15Elisha responded, “Take a bow and arrows.” So he got a bow and arrows. # 1Sm 20:20 16Then Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Put your hand on the bow.” So the king put his hand on it, and Elisha put his hands on the king’s hands. 17Elisha said, “Open the east window.” So he opened it. Elisha said, “Shoot! ” So he shot. # Jos 8:18 Then Elisha said, “The Lord’s arrow of victory, yes, the arrow of victory over Aram. You are to strike down the Arameans in Aphek # 1Kg 20:26 until you have put an end to them.”
18Then Elisha said, “Take the arrows! ” So he took them. Then Elisha said to the king of Israel, “Strike the ground! ” So he struck the ground three times and stopped. 19The man of God # 2Kg 5:20 was angry with him and said, “You should have struck the ground five or six times. Then you would have struck down Aram until you had put an end to them, but now you will only strike down Aram three times.” 20Then Elisha died and was buried. # 2Kg 2:1,11
Now Moabite raiders # 2Kg 3:7; 24:2 used to come into the land in the spring of the year. 21Once, as the Israelites were burying a man, suddenly they saw a raiding party, so they threw the man into Elisha’s tomb. When he touched Elisha’s bones, the man revived and stood up! # Mt 27:52
God’s Mercy on Israel
22Hazael # 1Kg 19:17; 2Kg 8:12-13 king of Aram oppressed Israel throughout the reign of Jehoahaz, 23but the Lord was gracious to them, had compassion on them, # 1Kg 8:28 and turned toward them because of His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. # Ex 2:24 He was not willing to destroy them. Even now He has not banished them from His presence. # 2Kg 14:27
24King Hazael of Aram died, and his son Ben-hadad # 2Kg 13:3 became king in his place. 25Then Jehoash son of Jehoahaz took back from Ben-hadad son of Hazael the cities that Hazael had taken in war from Jehoash’s father Jehoahaz. Jehoash defeated Ben-hadad three times and recovered the cities of Israel. # 2Kg 10:32

2 Kings 13
13
1In the twenty-third year of Joash the son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria for seventeen years. 2He did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin. He didn’t depart from it. 3Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he delivered them into the hand of Hazael king of Syria, and into the hand of Benhadad the son of Hazael, continually. 4Jehoahaz begged Yahweh, and Yahweh listened to him; for he saw the oppression of Israel, how the king of Syria oppressed them. 5(Yahweh gave Israel a savior, so that they went out from under the hand of the Syrians; and the children of Israel lived in their tents as before. 6Nevertheless they didn’t depart from the sins of the house of Jeroboam, with which he made Israel to sin, but walked in them; and the Asherah also remained in Samaria.) 7For he didn’t leave to Jehoahaz of the people any more than fifty horsemen, and ten chariots, and ten thousand footmen; for the king of Syria destroyed them and made them like the dust in threshing. 8Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz, and all that he did, and his might, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 9Jehoahaz slept with his fathers; and they buried him in Samaria; and Joash his son reigned in his place.
10In the thirty-seventh year of Joash king of Judah, Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz began to reign over Israel in Samaria for sixteen years. 11He did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight. He didn’t depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin; but he walked in them. 12Now the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, and his might with which he fought against Amaziah king of Judah, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 13Joash slept with his fathers; and Jeroboam sat on his throne. Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.
14Now Elisha became sick with the illness of which he died; and Joash the king of Israel came down to him, and wept over him, and said, “My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!”
15Elisha said to him, “Take bow and arrows;” and he took bow and arrows for himself. 16He said to the king of Israel, “Put your hand on the bow;” and he put his hand on it. Elisha laid his hands on the king’s hands. 17He said, “Open the window eastward;” and he opened it. Then Elisha said, “Shoot!” and he shot. He said, “Yahweh’s arrow of victory, even the arrow of victory over Syria; for you will strike the Syrians in Aphek until you have consumed them.”
18He said, “Take the arrows;” and he took them. He said to the king of Israel, “Strike the ground;” and he struck three times, and stopped. 19The man of God was angry with him, and said, “You should have struck five or six times. Then you would have struck Syria until you had consumed it, but now you will strike Syria just three times.”
20Elisha died, and they buried him.
Now the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year. 21As they were burying a man, behold, they saw a band of raiders; and they threw the man into Elisha’s tomb. As soon as the man touched Elisha’s bones, he revived, and stood up on his feet.
22Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz. 23But Yahweh was gracious to them, and had compassion on them, and favored them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them and he didn’t cast them from his presence as yet.
24Hazael king of Syria died; and Benhadad his son reigned in his place. 25Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz took again out of the hand of Benhadad the son of Hazael the cities which he had taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father by war. Joash struck him three times, and recovered the cities of Israel.
