Instructions on Prayer
1First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, 2for kings and all those who are in authority, # Ezr 6:10; Rm 13:1; 1Co 2:1 so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness # 2Pt 1:3 and dignity. # 1Tm 3:4; Ti 2:7 3This is good, and it pleases God our Savior, # 1Tm 1:1 4who wants everyone # Ti 2:11 to be saved # Ezk 18:23,32; Jn 3:17; 1Tm 4:10; Ti 2:11; 2Pt 3:9 and to come to the knowledge of the truth. # Jn 14:6,17
5For there is one God # Dt 6:4; Gl 3:20
and one mediator # Heb 8:6 between God and humanity,
Christ Jesus, Himself human, # Jn 1:14; Php 2:7; 3:3; 1Jn 4:2; 5:20
6who gave Himself — a ransom for all, # Mt 20:28; Gl 1:4
a testimony at the proper time.
7For this I was appointed a herald, an apostle # Eph 3:7-8; 1Tm 1:11; 2Tm 1:11 (I am telling the truth; # Other mss add in Christ I am not lying), and a teacher of the Gentiles # Ac 9:15 in faith and truth.
Instructions to Men and Women
8Therefore, I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or argument. # Mk 7:21; Lk 9:46-47; 24:38; Rm 14:1; Php 2:14 9Also, the women are to dress themselves in modest clothing, # 1Pt 3:3 with decency and good sense, not with elaborate hairstyles, gold, # Rv 3:18 pearls, or expensive apparel, 10but with good works, # 2Co 9:8; Gl 3:10 as is proper for women who affirm that they worship God. 11A woman should learn in silence with full submission. # 1Co 14:34; Ti 2:5 12I do not allow a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; instead, she is to be silent. 13For Adam was created first, then Eve. # Gn 2:7,22; 3:16; 1Co 11:8-12 14And Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and transgressed. # Gn 3:6,13; 2Co 11:3 15But she will be saved through childbearing, if she continues # Lit if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, # 1Th 3:12–4:10 with good judgment.
