Psalms 79

Psalm 79
A psalm by Asaph.
1O God, the nations have invaded the land that belongs to you.
They have dishonored your holy temple.
They have left Jerusalem in ruins.
2They have given the dead bodies of your servants
to the birds for food.
They have given the flesh of your godly ones
to the animals.
3They have shed the blood of your people around Jerusalem
as though it were water.
There is no one to bury your people.
4We have become a disgrace to our neighbors,
an object of ridicule and contempt to those around us.
5How long, O Lord?
Will you remain angry forever?
Will your fury continue to burn like fire?
6Pour your fury on the nations that do not know you,
on the kingdoms that have not called you.
7They have devoured Jacob.
They have destroyed his home.
8Do not hold the crimes of our ancestors against us.
Reach out to us soon with your compassion,
because we are helpless.
9Help us, O God, our savior, for the glory of your name.
Rescue us, and forgive our sins for the honor of your name.
10Why should the nations ⌞be allowed to⌟ say,
“Where is their God?”
Let us watch as the nations learn
that there is punishment for shedding the blood of your servants.
11Let the groans of prisoners come into your presence.
With your powerful arm rescue those who are condemned to death.
12Pay each one of our neighbors back
with seven times the number of insults they used to insult you, O Lord.
13Then we, your people, the flock in your pasture,
will give thanks to you forever.
We will praise you throughout every generation.

PSALM 79
A Psalm of Asaph.
1O God#GodHebrew: Elohim the nations are come into thine inheritance: thy holy temple have they defiled; they have laid Jerusalem in heaps. 2The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowl of the heavens, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth: 3Their blood have they shed like water round about Jerusalem, and there was none to bury them. 4We are become a reproach to our neighbours, a mockery and a derision to them that are round about us. 5How long, O Jehovah? wilt thou be angry for ever? Shall thy jealousy burn like fire?
6Pour out thy fury upon the nations that have not known thee, and upon the kingdoms that call not upon thy name: 7For they have devoured Jacob, and laid waste his habitation. 8Remember not against us the iniquities of our forefathers; let thy tender mercies speedily come to meet us: for we are brought very low. 9Help us, O God#GodHebrew: Elohim of our salvation, because of the glory of thy name; and deliver us, and forgive our sins, for thy name's sake. 10Wherefore should the nations say, Where is their God#GodHebrew: Elohim Let the avenging of the blood of thy servants that is shed be known among the nations in our sight. 11Let the groaning of the prisoner come before thee; according to the greatness of thine arm, preserve those that are appointed to die; 12And render unto our neighbours, sevenfold into their bosom, their reproach, wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord. 13And we, thy people and the sheep of thy pasture, will give thanks unto thee for ever; we will shew forth thy praise from generation to generation.
