Psalms 51

Psalm 51
For the choir director; a psalm by David when the prophet Nathan came to him after David’s adultery with Bathsheba.
1Have pity on me, O God, in keeping with your mercy.
In keeping with your unlimited compassion, wipe out my rebellious acts.
2Wash me thoroughly from my guilt,
and cleanse me from my sin.
3I admit that I am rebellious.
My sin is always in front of me.
4I have sinned against you, especially you.
I have done what you consider evil.
So you hand down justice when you speak,
and you are blameless when you judge.
5Indeed, I was born guilty.
I was a sinner when my mother conceived me.
6Yet, you desire truth and sincerity.
Deep down inside me you teach me wisdom.
7Purify me from sin with hyssop,#51:7 Branches from the hyssop plant were used in purification rites. and I will be clean.#51:7 “Clean” refers to anything that Moses’ Teachings say is presentable to God.
Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8Let me hear ⌞sounds of⌟ joy and gladness.
Let the bones that you have broken dance.
9Hide your face from my sins,
and wipe out all that I have done wrong.
10Create a clean heart in me, O God,
and renew a faithful spirit within me.
11Do not force me away from your presence,
and do not take your Holy Spirit from me.
12Restore the joy of your salvation to me,
and provide me with a spirit of willing obedience.
13 ⌞Then⌟ I will teach your ways to those who are rebellious,
and sinners will return to you.
14Rescue me from the guilt of murder,
O God, my savior.
Let my tongue sing joyfully about your righteousness!
15O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth will tell about your praise.
16You are not happy with any sacrifice.
Otherwise, I would offer one ⌞to you⌟.
You are not pleased with burnt offerings.
17The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit.
O God, you do not despise a broken and sorrowful heart.
18Favor Zion with your goodness.
Rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.
19Then you will be pleased with sacrifices offered in the right spirit—
with burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings.
Young bulls will be offered on your altar.

PSALM 51
To the chief Musician. A Psalm of David; when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bath-sheba.
1Be gracious unto me, O God#GodHebrew: Elohim according to thy loving-kindness; according to the abundance of thy tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. 2Wash me fully from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 3For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is continually before me. 4Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done what is evil in thy sight; that thou mayest be justified when thou speakest, be clear when thou judgest. 5Behold, in iniquity was I brought forth, and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6Behold, thou wilt have truth in the inward parts; and in the hidden part thou wilt make me to know wisdom.
7Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8Make me to hear gladness and joy; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. 9Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. 10Create in me a clean heart, O God#GodHebrew: Elohim and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not the spirit of thy holiness from me. 12Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, and let a willing spirit sustain me. 13I will teach transgressors thy ways, and sinners shall return unto thee.
14Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God#GodHebrew: Elohim thou God#GodHebrew: Elohim of my salvation: my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. 15Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare thy praise. 16For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou hast no pleasure in burnt-offering. 17The sacrifices of God#GodHebrew: Elohim are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God#GodHebrew: Elohim thou wilt not despise. 18Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion; build the walls of Jerusalem. 19Then shalt thou have sacrifices of righteousness, burnt-offering, and whole burnt-offering; then shall they offer up bullocks upon thine altar.
