Psalms 127

Psalm 127
A song by Solomon for going up to worship.
1If the Lord does not build the house,
it is useless for the builders to work on it.
If the Lord does not protect a city,
it is useless for the guard to stay alert.
2It is useless to work hard for the food you eat
by getting up early and going to bed late.
The Lord gives ⌞food⌟ to those he loves while they sleep.
3Children are an inheritance from the Lord.
They are a reward from him.
4The children born to a man when he is young
are like arrows in the hand of a warrior.
5Blessed is the man who has filled his quiver with them.
He will not be put to shame
when he speaks with his enemies in the city gate.

The Blessing of the Lord
A Solomonic song of ascents.
1Unless the Lord builds a house,
its builders labor over it in vain; # Ps 78:69
unless the Lord watches over a city,
the watchman stays alert in vain. # Ps 121:4
2In vain you get up early and stay up late,
working hard to have enough food —
yes, He gives sleep to the one He loves. # Or yes, He gives such things to His loved ones while they sleep # Ps 3:5; 4:8; Pr 3:24
3Sons are indeed a heritage from the Lord,
children, a reward. # Dt 7:13; Ps 113:9
4Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the sons born in one’s youth. # Ps 120:4
5Happy is the man who has filled his quiver with them. # Ps 128:2-3
Such men will never be put to shame
when they speak with their enemies at the city gate. # Jl 2:26-27
