Psalm 106
1Hallelujah!
Give thanks to the Lord because he is good,
because his mercy endures forever.
2Who can speak about all the mighty things the Lord has done?
Who can announce all the things for which he is worthy of praise?
3Blessed are those who defend justice
and do what is right at all times.
4Remember me, O Lord, when you show favor to your people.
Come to help me with your salvation
5so that I may see the prosperity of your chosen ones,
find joy in our people’s happiness,
and brag with the people who belong to you.
6We have sinned, and so did our ancestors.
We have done wrong.
We are guilty.
7When our ancestors were in Egypt,
they gave no thought to your miracles.
They did not remember your numerous acts of mercy,
so they rebelled at the sea, the Red Sea.
8He saved them because of his reputation
so that he could make his mighty power known.
9He angrily commanded the Red Sea, and it dried up.
He led them through deep water as though it were a desert.
10He rescued them from the power of the one who hated them.
He rescued them from the enemy.
11Water covered their adversaries.
Not one Egyptian survived.
12Then our ancestors believed what he said.
They sang his praise.
13They quickly forgot what he did.
They did not wait for his advice.
14They had an unreasonable desire ⌞for food⌟ in the wilderness.
In the desert they tested God.
15He gave them what they asked for.
He ⌞also⌟ gave them a degenerative disease.
16In the camp certain men became envious of Moses.
They also became envious of Aaron, the Lord’s holy one.
17The ground split open and swallowed Dathan.
It buried Abiram’s followers.
18A fire broke out among their followers.
Flames burned up wicked people.
19At Mount Horeb they made ⌞a statue of⌟ a calf.
They worshiped an idol made of metal.
20They traded their glorious God #106:20 Or “their glory.”
for the statue of a bull that eats grass.
21They forgot God, their savior,
the one who did spectacular things in Egypt,
22miracles in the land of Ham,
and terrifying things at the Red Sea.
23God said he was going to destroy them,
but Moses, his chosen one, stood in his way
to prevent him from exterminating them.
24They refused ⌞to enter⌟ the pleasant land.
They did not believe what he said.
25They complained in their tents.
They did not obey the Lord.
26Raising his hand, he swore
that he would kill them in the wilderness,
27kill their descendants among the nations,
and scatter them throughout various lands.
28They joined in worshiping the god Baal while they were at Peor,
and they ate what was sacrificed to the dead.
29They infuriated God by what they did,
and a plague broke out among them.
30Then Phinehas stood between God and the people,
and the plague was stopped.
31Because of this, Phinehas was considered righteous forever,
throughout every generation.
32They made God angry by the water at Meribah.
Things turned out badly for Moses because of what they did,
33since they made him bitter so that he spoke recklessly.
34They did not destroy the people as the Lord had told them.
35Instead, they intermarried with other nations.
They learned to do what other nations did,
36and they worshiped their idols,
which became a trap for them.
37They sacrificed their sons and daughters to demons.
38They shed innocent blood,
the blood of their own sons and daughters
whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan.
The land became polluted with blood.
39They became filthy because of what they did.
They behaved like prostitutes.
40The Lord burned with anger against his own people.
He was disgusted with those who belonged to him.
41He handed them over to other nations,
and those who hated them ruled them.
42Their enemies oppressed them
and made them subject to their power.
43He rescued them many times,
but they continued to plot rebellion against him
and to sink deeper because of their sin.
44He saw that they were suffering
when he heard their cry for help.
45He remembered his promise #106:45 Or “covenant.” to them.
In keeping with his rich mercy, he changed his plans.
46He let them find compassion
from all those who held them captive.
47Rescue us, O Lord our God, and gather us from the nations
so that we may give thanks to your holy name
and make your praise our glory.
48Thanks be to the Lord God of Israel
from everlasting to everlasting.
Let all the people say amen.
Hallelujah!

Tehillim (Psa) 106
106
1Halleluyah!
Give thanks to Adonai; for he is good,
for his grace continues forever.
2Who can express Adonai’s mighty doings
or proclaim in full his praise?
3How happy are those who act justly,
who always do what is right!
4Remember me, Adonai, when you show favor to your people,
keep me in mind when you save them;
5so I can see how well things are going
with those whom you have chosen,
so that I can rejoice in your nation’s joy,
and glory in your heritage.
6Together with our ancestors, we have sinned,
done wrong, acted wickedly.
7Our ancestors in Egypt failed to grasp
the meaning of your wonders.
They didn’t keep in mind your great deeds of grace
but rebelled at the sea, at the Sea of Suf.
8Yet he saved them for his own name’s sake,
to make known his mighty power.
9He rebuked the Sea of Suf, and it dried up;
he led them through its depths as through a desert.
10He saved them from hostile hands,
redeemed them from the power of the foe.
11The water closed over their adversaries;
not one of them was left.
12Then they believed his words,
and they sang his praise.
13But soon they forgot his deeds
and wouldn’t wait for his counsel.
14In the desert they gave way to insatiable greed;
in the wastelands they put God to the test.
15He gave them what they wanted
but sent meagerness into their souls.
16In the camp they were jealous of Moshe
and Aharon, Adonai’s holy one.
17The earth opened up and swallowed Datan
and closed over Aviram’s allies.
18A fire blazed out against that group,
the flames consumed the wicked.
19In Horev they fashioned a calf,
they worshipped a cast metal image.
20Thus they exchanged their Glory
for the image of an ox that eats grass!
21They forgot God, who had saved them,
who had done great things in Egypt,
22wonders in the land of Ham,
fearsome deeds by the Sea of Suf.
23Therefore he said that he would destroy them,
[and he would have,] had not Moshe his chosen one
stood before him in the breach
to turn back his destroying fury.
24Next, they rejected the beautiful land,
they didn’t trust his promise;
25and they complained in their tents,
they didn’t obey Adonai.
26Therefore, raising his hand, he swore to them
that he would strike them down in the desert
27and strike down their descendants among the nations,
dispersing them in foreign lands.
28Now they joined themselves to Ba‘al-P‘or
and ate meat sacrificed to dead things.
29Thus they provoked him to anger with their deeds,
so that a plague broke out among them.
30Then Pinchas stood up and executed judgment;
so the plague was checked.
31That was credited to him as righteousness,
through all generations forever.
32They angered him at the M’rivah Spring,
and Moshe suffered on their account;
33for when they embittered his spirit,
[Moshe] spoke up without thinking.
34They failed to destroy the peoples,
as Adonai had ordered them to do,
35but mingled with the nations
and learned to follow their ways.
36They went on to serve their idols,
which became a snare for them.
37They even sacrificed their sons
and their daughters to demons.
38Yes, they shed innocent blood,
the blood of their own sons and daughters,
whom they sacrificed to Kena‘an’s false gods,
polluting the land with blood.
39Thus they were defiled by their deeds;
they prostituted themselves by their actions,
40For this Adonai’s fury blazed up against his people,
and he detested his heritage.
41He handed them over to the power of the nations,
and those who hated them ruled over them.
42Their enemies oppressed them
and kept them in subjection to their power.
43Many times [God] rescued them,
but they kept making plans to rebel.
Thus they were brought low
by their own wrongdoing.
44Still he took pity on their distress
whenever he heard their cry.
45For their sakes he kept in mind his covenant
and in his limitless grace relented,
46causing them to be treated with compassion
by all who had taken them captive.
47Save us, Adonai our God!
Gather us from among the nations,
so that we can thank your holy name
and glory in praising you.
48Blessed be Adonai, the God of Isra’el,
from eternity past to eternity future.
Now let all the people say,
“Amen! Halleluyah!”
