Proverbs 15
15
1A gentle answer turns away rage,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.
2The tongues of wise people give good expression to knowledge,
but the mouths of fools pour out a flood of stupidity.
3The eyes of the Lord are everywhere.
They watch evil people and good people.
4A soothing tongue is a tree of life,
but a deceitful tongue breaks the spirit.
5A stubborn fool despises his father’s discipline,
but whoever appreciates a warning shows good sense.
6Great treasure is in the house of a righteous person,
but trouble comes along with the income of a wicked person.
7The lips of wise people spread knowledge,
but a foolish attitude does not.
8A sacrifice brought by wicked people is disgusting to the Lord,
but the prayers of decent people please him.
9The way of wicked people is disgusting to the Lord,
but he loves those who pursue righteousness.
10Discipline is a terrible ⌞burden⌟ to anyone who leaves the ⌞right⌟ path.
Anyone who hates a warning will die.
11If Sheol and Abaddon lie open in front of the Lord
how much more the human heart!
12A mocker does not appreciate a warning.
He will not go to wise people.
13A joyful heart makes a cheerful face,
but with a heartache comes depression.
14The mind of a person who has understanding searches for knowledge,
but the mouths of fools feed on stupidity.
15Every day is a terrible day for a miserable person,
but a cheerful heart has a continual feast.
16Better to have a little with the fear of the Lord
than great treasure and turmoil.
17Better to have a dish of vegetables where there is love
than juicy steaks where there is hate.
18A hothead stirs up a fight,
but one who holds his temper calms disputes.
19The path of lazy people is like a thorny hedge,
but the road of decent people is an ⌞open⌟ highway.
A Wise Son Brings Blessings to Others
20A wise son makes his father happy,
but a foolish child despises its mother.
21Stupidity is fun to the one without much sense,
but a person who has understanding forges straight ahead.
22Without advice plans go wrong,
but with many advisers they succeed.
23A person is delighted to hear an answer from his own mouth,
and a timely word—oh, how good!
24The path of life for a wise person leads upward
in order to turn him away from hell below.
25The Lord tears down the house of an arrogant person,
but he protects the property of widows.
26The thoughts of evil people are disgusting to the Lord,
but pleasant words are pure to him.
27Whoever is greedy for unjust gain brings trouble to his family,
but whoever hates bribes will live.
28The heart of a righteous person carefully considers how to answer,
but the mouths of wicked people pour out a flood of evil things.
29The Lord is far from wicked people,
but he hears the prayers of righteous people.
30A twinkle in the eye delights the heart.
Good news refreshes the body.
31The ear that listens to a life-giving warning
will be at home among wise people.
32Whoever ignores discipline despises himself,
but the person who listens to warning gains understanding.
33The fear of the Lord is discipline ⌞leading to⌟ wisdom,
and humility comes before honor.

1 # [ch. 25:15]; See Judg. 8:1-3 A soft answer turns away wrath,
but #See 1 Sam. 25:10-13; 1 Kgs. 12:13-16a harsh word stirs up anger.
2The tongue of the wise commends knowledge,
but #[ver. 28; ch. 12:23; 13:16; 18:2]the mouths of fools pour out folly.
3 # See Job 31:4 The eyes of the Lord are in every place,
keeping watch on the evil and the good.
4 # [ch. 12:18] A gentle#15:4 Or healing tongue is #See ch. 3:18 a tree of life,
but #ch. 11:3perverseness in it breaks the spirit.
5 # [ch. 10:1] A fool #[Ps. 107:11] despises his father’s instruction,
but #[ch. 13:18]whoever heeds reproof is prudent.
6In the house of the righteous there is much treasure,
but trouble befalls the income of the wicked.
7 # [Matt. 12:34, 35] The lips of the wise spread knowledge;

9The way of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord,
but he loves him #ch. 21:21; 1 Tim. 6:11; [ch. 11:19]who pursues righteousness.
10There is #[Isa. 1:5] severe discipline for him who forsakes the way;
# See ch. 12:1 whoever hates reproof will die.
11Sheol and Abaddon lie open before the Lord;
how much more #2 Chr. 6:30; Ps. 44:21; John 2:24; See 1 Sam. 16:7the hearts of the children of man!
12 # See Ps. 1:1 A scoffer #Amos 5:10does not like to be reproved;
he will not go to the wise.
13 # [ver. 15; ch. 17:22] A glad heart makes a cheerful face,
but by #See ch. 12:25 sorrow of heart the spirit is #ch. 18:14crushed.
14 # ch. 14:6; 19:24 The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge,
but the mouths of fools feed on folly.
15All the days of the afflicted are evil,
but #ver. 13the cheerful of heart has a continual feast.
16 # ch. 16:8; Ps. 37:16; [1 Tim. 6:6] Better is a little with the fear of the Lord
than great treasure and trouble with it.
17 # ch. 17:1 Better is a dinner of herbs where love is
than #[Matt. 22:4; Luke 15:23]a fattened ox and hatred with it.
18 # ch. 29:22; [ch. 16:28; 26:21] A hot-tempered man #ch. 28:25 stirs up strife,
but he who is #See ch. 14:29slow to anger quiets contention.
19The way of #ch. 19:24; 22:13 a sluggard is like a hedge of #ch. 22:5 thorns,
but the path of the upright is #Jer. 18:15a level highway.
20 # See ch. 29:3 A wise son makes a glad father,
but a foolish man despises his mother.
21 # ch. 10:23 Folly is a joy to him who lacks sense,
but a man of understanding #[Eph. 5:15]walks straight ahead.
22 # ch. 11:14; [ch. 20:18] Without counsel plans fail,
but with many advisers they succeed.
23To make an apt answer is a joy to a man,
and #ch. 25:11; [Isa. 50:4]a word in season, how good it is!
24The path of life leads upward #Col. 3:1, 2; [ch. 2:18, 19; Phil. 3:20]for the prudent,
that he may turn away from Sheol beneath.
25The Lord tears down the house of #[ch. 29:23] the proud
but #[ch. 23:10] maintains #[Ps. 68:5; 146:9]the widow’s boundaries.
26 # ch. 6:16, 18 The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord,
but #ch. 16:24gracious words are pure.
27Whoever is #ch. 1:19; [Isa. 5:8; Jer. 17:11] greedy for unjust gain #ch. 11:29; [Josh. 7:25] troubles his own household,
but he who hates #ch. 17:23bribes will live.
28The heart of the righteous #Ps. 37:30 ponders how to answer,
but #[1 Pet. 3:15]; See ver. 2the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.
29The Lord is #[Ps. 18:41; 34:16] far from the wicked,
but he #Ps. 145:18, 19; [ver. 8]hears the prayer of the righteous.

Ps. 38:10 The light of the eyes rejoices the heart,
and #[ch. 25:25]good news refreshes#15:30 Hebrew makes fat the bones.
31 # ver. 5; ch. 20:12; 25:12 The ear that listens to #[ch. 6:23]life-giving reproof
will dwell among the wise.
32Whoever #[ch. 8:33] ignores instruction #See ch. 8:36 despises himself,
but he who listens to reproof #[ch. 19:8]gains intelligence.
33 # See ch. 1:7 The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom,
and #ch. 18:12humility comes before honor.
