The Temptation of Jesus

Jesus Begins His Ministry
12Now when he heard that #ch. 14:3; Mark 1:14; Luke 3:19, 20; [John 3:24] John had been arrested, #Luke 4:14he withdrew into Galilee. 13And leaving #See ch. 2:23 Nazareth he went and lived in #[ch. 9:1] Capernaum by #John 6:1 the sea, in the territory of #Josh. 19:32-34Zebulun and Naphtali, 14#See ch. 1:22so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—

have seen a great light,

Jesus Calls the First Disciples
18 # For ver. 18-22, see Mark 1:16-20; [Luke 5:2-11; John 1:40-42] While walking by #ver. 13the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you #ch. 13:47fishers of men.”#4:19 The Greek word anthropoi refers here to both men and women 20Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Jesus Ministers to Great Crowds
23 # Mark 1:39 And he went throughout all Galilee, #ch. 9:35; 13:54; Mark 1:21; Luke 4:15; John 18:20 teaching in their synagogues and #ch. 24:14; Luke 4:43; [ch. 13:19] proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and #ch. 8:16; 14:35, 36; Mark 1:34; 6:55, 56healing every disease and every affliction among the people. 24So his fame spread throughout all #Luke 2:2 Syria, and #[See ver. 23 above] they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and #ch. 8:6 pains, #[John 10:21] those oppressed by demons, #ch. 17:15 those having seizures, and #ch. 9:2, 6paralytics, and he healed them. 25#Mark 3:7, 8; Luke 6:17 And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the #Mark 5:20Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.
