Come to Our Help
To the choirmaster. #Ps. 42, titleA Maskil#44:1 Probably a musical or liturgical term of the Sons of Korah.
1O God, we have heard with our ears,
#
Ps. 78:3; Ex. 10:2; 12:26, 27; 13:8, 14, 15; Judg. 6:13; See Deut. 6:20-23 our fathers have told us,
what deeds you performed in their days,
# See Ps. 77:5 in the days of old:
2you with your own hand #Ps. 78:55; 80:8; Josh. 3:10 drove out the nations,
but #Ex. 15:17; 2 Sam. 7:10 them you planted;
you afflicted the peoples,
but #Ps. 80:9-11; [Jer. 17:8]them you set free;
3for not #Josh. 24:12; Hos. 1:7 by their own sword did they win the land,
nor did their own arm save them,
but your right hand and your arm,
and #See Ps. 4:6 the light of your face,
#
Deut. 4:37; 7:7, 8; 10:15 for you delighted in them.
4 #
Ps. 74:12 You are my King, O God;
# See Ps. 42:8 ordain salvation for Jacob!
5Through you we #[Deut. 33:17; Dan. 8:4] push down our foes;
through your name we #Ps. 60:12tread down those who rise up against us.
6For not in #[Ps. 33:16; 1 Sam. 17:47]my bow do I trust,
nor can my sword save me.
7But you have saved us from our foes
and have #See Ps. 35:4put to shame those who hate us.
8 # See Ps. 34:2 In God we have boasted continually,
and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah
9But you have #ver. 23; Ps. 43:2; 60:1, 10; 74:1; 108:11; See Ps. 89:38-45 rejected us and disgraced us
and #[Judg. 4:14; 2 Sam. 5:24]have not gone out with our armies.
10You have made us #Lev. 26:17; Deut. 28:25; Josh. 7:8, 12turn back from the foe,
and those who hate us have gotten spoil.
11You have made us like #[ver. 22] sheep for slaughter
and have #Ps. 106:27; Lev. 26:33; Deut. 4:27; 28:64; Isa. 52:3; Ezek. 20:23; [John 7:35; 1 Pet. 1:1]scattered us among the nations.
12 # [Deut. 32:30; Judg. 2:14; 3:8; Jer. 15:13] You have sold your people for a trifle,
demanding no high price for them.
13You have made us #Ps. 39:8; 79:4; 89:41; 119:22; [Neh. 2:17] the taunt of our neighbors,
the derision and #[Ps. 80:6]scorn of those around us.
14You have made us #Jer. 24:9; See Job 17:6 a byword among the nations,
# See Job 16:4 a laughingstock#44:14 Hebrew a shaking of the head among the peoples.
15All day long my disgrace is before me,
and #2 Chr. 32:21shame has covered my face
16at the sound of the taunter and reviler,
at the sight of #Ps. 8:2the enemy and the avenger.

Dan. 9:13
All this has come upon us,
though we have not forgotten you,
and we have not been false to your covenant.
18Our heart has not turned back,
nor have our #Ps. 37:31 steps #Ps. 119:51, 157; Job 23:11departed from your way;
19yet you have #Ps. 51:8 broken us in the place of #See Job 30:29 jackals
and covered us with #See Job 3:5the shadow of death.

or #Ps. 68:31; Job 11:13 spread out our hands to #See Ps. 81:9a foreign god,

Ps. 139:1; Jer. 17:10 would not God discover this?

22Yet #ver. 11; Cited Rom. 8:36for your sake we are killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.
23 # See Ps. 35:23 Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord?

24Why #See Job 13:24do you hide your face?
Why do you forget our affliction and oppression?
25For our #Ps. 119:25soul is bowed down to the dust;
our belly clings to the ground.
26Rise up; #Ps. 63:7 come to our help!
# See Ps. 25:22 Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love!

Psalms 44
44
For the Music Director. A Contemplative Maskil of the sons of Korah.
1We have heard with our ears, O God,
our fathers have told us
what work You did in their days,
in the days of old:
2#Ps 63:1; 84:2 how You drove out the nations with Your hand,
and planted others instead;
how You afflicted peoples,
and sent them away.
3#Ps 79:10; 80:5 For they did not take possession of the land by their own sword,
nor did their own arm save them;
but it was Your right hand, and Your arm,
and the light of Your countenance, because You had favor on them.
4#Isa 30:29; Ps 62:8 You are my King, O God;
command deliverances for Jacob.
5#Ps 42:11; 43:5 Through You we will push down our opponents;
through Your name we will trample those who rise up against us.
6#2Sa 17:22; Dt 3:8–9 For I will not trust in my bow,
nor will my sword save me.
7#Ps 88:7; Jnh 2:3 But You have saved us from our opponents,
and have put to shame those who hate us.
8#Job 35:10; Ps 63:6 In God we boast all the day long,
and give thanks to Your name forever. Selah
9#Ps 38:6; 18:2 But You have rejected us and put us to shame,
and do not go out with our armies.
10#Ps 42:3; Joel 2:17 You make us to turn back from the opponent,
and those who hate us make us their spoil.
11#Ps 42:5; 43:5 You have placed us like sheep for prey,
and have scattered us among the nations.
12You sell Your people for nothing,
and do not increase Your wealth by their sale.
13You make us a reproach to our neighbors,
a scorn and a derision to those who surround us.
14You make us a byword among the nations,
a shaking of the head among the people.
15All day long my reproach is before me,
and the shame of my face covers me,
16from the voice of him who reproaches and reviles,
by reason of the enemy and avenger.
17All this is come on us,
yet we have not forgotten You,
nor have we dealt falsely in Your covenant.
18Our heart is not turned back,
nor have our steps deviated from Your way,
19though You have crushed us in the place of jackals,
and covered us with the shadow of death.
20If we have forgotten the name of our God,
or stretched out our hands to a strange god,
21would not God search this out?
For He knows the secrets of the heart.
22Yes, for Your sake we are killed all the day long;
we are considered like sheep for the slaughter.
23Awake; why do You sleep, O Lord?
Arise; do not reject us forever.
24Why do You hide Your face,
and forget our affliction and our oppression?
25For our soul is bowed down to the dust;
our body cleaves to the earth.
26Arise, be our help,
and redeem us for the sake of Your lovingkindness.
