Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two
1After this the Lord appointed #Ex. 24:1, 9; Num. 11:16 seventy-two#10:1 Some manuscripts seventy; also verse 17 others and #[ch. 9:2, 52]sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2#Matt. 9:37, 38; John 4:35 And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. #[2 Thess. 3:1]Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 3Go your way; #Matt. 10:16; [John 17:18]behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4#For ver. 4-12, [ch. 9:1-5; 22:35; Matt. 10:9-15; Mark 6:8-11] Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and #2 Kgs. 4:29greet no one on the road. 5Whatever house you enter, first say, #1 Sam. 25:6‘Peace be to this house!’ 6And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, #[Ps. 35:13 (Heb.)]it will return to you. 7And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for #See 1 Tim. 5:18the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. 8Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. 9Heal the sick in it and say to them, #ver. 11; See Matt. 3:2‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, 11#Acts 13:51; [Neh. 5:13; Acts 18:6] ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that #ver. 9the kingdom of God has come near.’ 12I tell you, #See Matt. 10:15 it will be more bearable on #Matt. 7:22that day for Sodom than for that town.
Woe to Unrepentant Cities
13 # For ver. 13-15, see Matt. 11:21-23 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in # [Isa. 23; Ezek. 28:2-24; Amos 1:9, 10] Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14#[ch. 12:47, 48] But it will be more bearable in the judgment for #[See ver. 13 above]Tyre and Sidon than for you. 15And you, Capernaum, #Cited from Isa. 14:13-15 will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to #ch. 16:23; Acts 2:27Hades.

The Return of the Seventy-Two
17 # ver. 1 The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, #See Mark 16:17even the demons are subject to us in your name!” 18And he said to them, #[John 12:31; 16:11; Col. 2:15; Rev. 12:8, 9] “I saw Satan #[Isa. 14:12; Rev. 9:1]fall like lightning from heaven. 19Behold, I have given you authority #Ps. 91:13; Mark 16:18; Acts 28:5 to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of #Matt. 13:39 the enemy, and #ch. 21:18; [Rom. 8:28, 39]nothing shall hurt you. 20#[Matt. 7:22, 23] Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that #Ex. 32:32, 33; Ps. 69:28; Isa. 4:3; Ezek. 13:9; Dan. 12:1; Phil. 4:3; Heb. 12:23your names are written in heaven.”
Jesus Rejoices in the Father’s Will
21 # For ver. 21, 22, see Matt. 11:25-27 In that same hour #[Isa. 53:11] he rejoiced #[Mark 12:36] in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, #See Acts 17:24 Lord of heaven and earth, that #Job 37:24; 1 Cor. 1:19-27; 2 Cor. 3:14 you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and #Ps. 8:2; Matt. 21:16; [ch. 8:10; Matt. 16:17] revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for #[ch. 12:32]such was your gracious will.#10:21 Or for so it pleased you well 22#John 1:18; 6:46; 7:29; 8:19; 10:15; 17:25; See Matt. 28:18 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is #John 1:18; 6:46; 7:29; 8:19; 10:15; 17:25; See Matt. 28:18 except the Father, or who the Father is #John 1:18; 6:46; 7:29; 8:19; 10:15; 17:25; See Matt. 28:18 except the Son and anyone #[John 17:26]to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”
23Then turning to the disciples he said privately, #Matt. 13:16, 17; [Matt. 16:17]“Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! 24For I tell you #Heb. 11:13; 1 Pet. 1:10-12; [John 8:56]that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”
The Parable of the Good Samaritan
25 # For ver. 25-28, [ch. 18:18-20; Matt. 19:16-19; 22:34-39; Mark 10:17-19] And behold, a #See ch. 7:30 lawyer stood up to #See John 8:6 put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to #Matt. 19:29; 25:34, 46inherit eternal life?” 26He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27And he answered, #Matt. 22:37; Mark 12:30; Cited from Deut. 6:5 “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and #Cited from Lev. 19:18; See Matt. 19:19your neighbor as yourself.” 28And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; #Lev. 18:5; Neh. 9:29; Ezek. 20:11; Rom. 10:5; Gal. 3:12do this, and you will live.”
29But he, #ch. 16:15desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30Jesus replied, “A man #[ch. 18:31; 19:28]was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31Now by chance a #John 1:19; [Num. 8:19]priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32So likewise #[See ver. 31 above]a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a #See Matt. 10:5Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34He went to him and #Isa. 1:6bound up his wounds, pouring on #Isa. 1:6oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35And the next day he took out two #See Matt. 18:28denarii#10:35 A denarius was a day’s wage for a laborer and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ 36Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” 37He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”
Martha and Mary
38Now as they went on their way, Jesus#10:38 Greek he entered a village. And a woman named #John 11:1, 19, 20; 12:2, 3 Martha #ch. 19:6welcomed him into her house. 39And she had a sister called #[See ver. 38 above] Mary, who #ch. 8:35; [Acts 22:3]sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. 40But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are #[1 Cor. 7:32-34]; See ch. 12:22anxious and troubled about many things, 42but one thing is necessary.#10:42 Some manuscripts few things are necessary, or only one Mary has chosen #Ps. 16:5the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

Jesus Sends Out 72 of His Followers
1After this, the Lord chose 72#10:1 72 Some Greek copies say 70. Also in verse 17. more followers. He sent them out in groups of two. He sent them ahead of him into every town and place where he planned to go. 2He said to them, “There is such a big harvest of people to bring in. But there are only a few workers to help harvest them. God owns the harvest. Ask him to send more workers to help bring in his harvest.
3“You can go now. But listen! I am sending you, and you will be like sheep among wolves. 4Don’t carry any money, a bag, or sandals. Don’t stop to talk with people on the road. 5Before you go into a house, say, ‘Peace be with this home.’ 6If the people living there love peace, your blessing of peace will stay with them. But if not, your blessing of peace will come back to you. 7Stay in the peace-loving house. Eat and drink what the people there give you. A worker should be given his pay. Don’t leave that house to stay in another house.
8“If you go into a town and the people welcome you, eat the food they give you. 9Heal the sick people who live there, and tell them, ‘God’s kingdom is now very near you#10:9 is now very near you Or “is coming to you soon” or “has come to you.”!’
10“But if you go into a town and the people don’t welcome you, then go out into the streets of that town and say, 11‘Even the dirt from your town that sticks to our feet we wipe off against you. But remember that God’s kingdom is coming soon.’ 12I tell you, on the judgment day it will be worse for the people of that town than for the people of Sodom.
Jesus Warns People Who Refuse to Believe
(Mt. 11:20–24)
13“It will be bad for you, Chorazin! It will be bad for you, Bethsaida! I did many miracles in you. If those same miracles had happened in Tyre and Sidon, then the people in those cities would have changed their lives and stopped sinning a long time ago. They would have worn sackcloth and sat in ashes to show that they were sorry for their sins. 14But on the judgment day it will be worse for you than for Tyre and Sidon. 15And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will be thrown down to the place of death!
16“When anyone listens to you my followers, they are really listening to me. But when anyone refuses to accept you, they are really refusing to accept me. And when anyone refuses to accept me, they are refusing to accept the one who sent me.”
Satan Falls
17When the 72 followers came back from their trip, they were very happy. They said, “Lord, even the demons obeyed us when we used your name!”
18Jesus said to them, “I saw Satan falling like lightning from the sky. 19He is the enemy, but know that I have given you more power than he has. I have given you power to crush his snakes and scorpions under your feet. Nothing will hurt you. 20Yes, even the spirits obey you. And you can be happy, not because you have this power, but because your names are written in heaven.”
Jesus Prays to the Father
(Mt. 11:25–27; 13:16–17)
21Then the Holy Spirit made Jesus feel very happy. Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth. I am thankful that you have hidden these things from those who are so wise and so smart. But you have shown them to people who are like little children. Yes, Father, you did this because it’s what you really wanted to do.
22“My Father has given me all things. No one knows who the Son is—only the Father knows. And only the Son knows who the Father is. The only people who will know about the Father are those the Son chooses to tell.”
23Then Jesus turned to his followers. They were there alone with him. He said, “It is a great blessing for you to see what you now see! 24I tell you, many prophets and kings wanted to see what you now see, but they could not. And they wanted to hear what you now hear, but they could not.”
A Story About the Good Samaritan
25Then an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. He said, “Teacher, what must I do to get eternal life?”
26Jesus said to him, “What is written in the law? What do you understand from it?”
27The man answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’#Quote from Deut. 6:5. Also, ‘Love your neighbor the same as you love yourself.’#Quote from Lev. 19:18.”
28Jesus said, “Your answer is right. Do this and you will have eternal life.”
29But the man wanted to show that the way he was living was right. So he said to Jesus, “But who is my neighbor?”
30To answer this question, Jesus said, “A man was going down the road from Jerusalem to Jericho. Some robbers surrounded him, tore off his clothes, and beat him. Then they left him lying there on the ground almost dead.
31“It happened that a Jewish priest was going down that road. When he saw the man, he did not stop to help him. He walked away. 32Next, a Levite came near. He saw the hurt man, but he went around him. He would not stop to help him either. He just walked away.
33“Then a Samaritan man traveled down that road. He came to the place where the hurt man was lying. He saw the man and felt very sorry for him. 34The Samaritan went to him and poured olive oil and wine#10:34 olive oil and wine These were used like medicine to soften and clean wounds. on his wounds. Then he covered the man’s wounds with cloth. The Samaritan had a donkey. He put the hurt man on his donkey, and he took him to an inn. There he cared for him. 35The next day, the Samaritan took out two silver coins and gave them to the man who worked at the inn. He said, ‘Take care of this hurt man. If you spend more money on him, I will pay it back to you when I come again.’”
36Then Jesus said, “Which one of these three men do you think was really a neighbor to the man who was hurt by the robbers?”
37The teacher of the law answered, “The one who helped him.”
Jesus said, “Then you go and do the same.”
Mary and Martha
38While Jesus and his followers were traveling, he went into a town, and a woman named Martha let him stay at her house. 39She had a sister named Mary. Mary was sitting at Jesus’ feet and listening to him teach. 40But her sister Martha was busy doing all the work that had to be done. Martha went in and said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are getting worried and upset about too many things. 42Only one thing is important. Mary has made the right choice, and it will never be taken away from her.”
