The Healing at the Pool on the Sabbath
1After this there was a #See ch. 6:4feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2Now there is in Jerusalem by #Neh. 3:1, 32; 12:39the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic#5:2 Or Hebrew called Bethesda,#5:2 Some manuscripts Bethsaida which has five roofed colonnades. 3In these lay a multitude of invalids—blind, lame, and #Matt. 12:10paralyzed.#5:3 Some manuscripts insert, wholly or in part, waiting for the moving of the water; 4 for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and stirred the water: whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was healed of whatever disease he had 5One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” 7The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” 8Jesus said to him, #Matt. 9:6, 7; Mark 2:9, 11, 12; Luke 5:24, 25“Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” 9#[See ver. 8 above] And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.
# ch. 9:14 Now that day was the Sabbath. 10So the Jews#5:10 The Greek word Ioudaioi refers specifically here to Jewish religious leaders, and others under their influence, who opposed Jesus in that time; also verses 15, 16, 18 said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and #Ex. 20:10; Neh. 13:19; Jer. 17:21, 22; [ch. 7:23; 9:16; Matt. 12:2; Mark 2:24; 3:4; Luke 6:2; 13:14]it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.” 11But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’” 12They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for #[ch. 6:15]Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. 14Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well! #[ch. 8:11] Sin no more, #[Ezra 9:14]that nothing worse may happen to you.” 15The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. 16And this was why the Jews #ch. 15:20; [Acts 9:4, 5] were persecuting Jesus, #ch. 7:23; 9:16because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”
Jesus Is Equal with God
18This was why the Jews #See ch. 7:1 were seeking all the more to kill him, #See ch. 10:33 because not only was he #ver. 16 breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God #[Rom. 8:32] his own Father, #Phil. 2:6making himself equal with God.
The Authority of the Son
19So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, #See ver. 30 the Son #[ch. 16:13]can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father#5:19 Greek he does, that the Son does likewise. 20For #ch. 3:35; 10:17; 15:9, 10; 17:23-26; [Matt. 3:17] the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And #[ch. 14:12] greater works than these will he show him, so that #ch. 7:21you may marvel. 21For as the Father #[Deut. 32:39; 2 Cor. 1:9] raises the dead and #Rom. 4:17; 8:11 gives them life, so #[ch. 6:33; 11:25]; See 1 Cor. 15:45 also the Son gives life #[Rom. 9:18]to whom he will. 22#[Acts 17:31] For the Father judges no one, but #ver. 27; ch. 9:39; Acts 10:42; [ch. 3:17]; See ch. 17:2has given all judgment to the Son, 23that all may honor the Son, just as they #ch. 8:49 honor the Father. #Luke 10:16; [ch. 15:23; 1 John 2:23]Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24Truly, truly, I say to you, #[ch. 8:51] whoever hears my word and #ch. 20:31; 1 John 5:9-13; [ch. 3:15, 36; 12:44] believes him who sent me has eternal life. He #ch. 3:18; [ver. 29] does not come into judgment, but #1 John 3:14has passed from death to life.
25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, # See ch. 4:21, 23 an hour is coming, and is now here, when # See Eph. 2:1, 5 the dead will hear # [ch. 11:43] the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear # See Eph. 2:1, 5 will live. 26#[ch. 6:57] For as the Father has life in himself, #See ch. 1:4; 17:2so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27And he #ver. 22has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28Do not marvel at this, for #[See ver. 25 above] an hour is coming when #ch. 11:24; 1 Cor. 15:52; [ch. 11:44, 45]all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29and come out, #See Dan. 12:2those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
Witnesses to Jesus
30 # ver. 19; ch. 8:28; 14:10 “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and # ch. 8:16 my judgment is just, because # ch. 4:34; 6:38; [ch. 7:18; Rom. 15:3] I seek not my own will # See Matt. 26:39 but the will of him who sent me. 31#[ch. 8:13, 14, 18, 54; 18:21]If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. 32There is #ver. 37 another who bears witness about me, and #ch. 7:28, 29I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. 33#See ch. 1:7, 19You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34Not that #1 John 5:9the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35He was a burning and #2 Pet. 1:19 shining lamp, and #[Matt. 13:20; 21:26]you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36But #[See ver. 34 above] the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For #ch. 10:25, 38; 14:11; 15:24; [ch. 2:23; Matt. 11:4] the works that the Father has given me #See ch. 4:34 to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, #[ch. 3:2] bear witness about me that #See ch. 3:17the Father has sent me. 37And the Father who sent me #ch. 8:18; [Matt. 3:17] has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, #See ch. 1:18his form you have never seen, 38and #[1 John 2:14; 4:13, 14; 5:10]you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. 39#[Acts 17:11; 2 Tim. 3:15] You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and #See Luke 24:27it is they that bear witness about me, 40yet #ver. 43; ch. 3:19; 7:17; [Matt. 23:37; Luke 13:34]you refuse to come to me that you may have life. 41#ver. 34; [Matt. 6:1, 2; 1 Thess. 2:6]I do not receive glory from people. 42But #See ch. 2:24, 25 I know that you do not have #Luke 11:42; See Jude 21the love of God within you. 43I have come #ch. 10:25; 12:13; 17:12 in my Father’s name, and #ch. 1:11; 3:11, 32 you do not receive me. #[Matt. 24:5]If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and #Rom. 2:29 do not seek the glory that comes from #ch. 17:3the only God? 45Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, #[ch. 9:28, 29; Rom. 2:17]on whom you have set your hope. 46For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for #ver. 47; Num. 21:9; Deut. 18:15; Luke 24:27; [ch. 12:41]he wrote of me. 47But #[Luke 16:31]if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

John 5

1After this there was a Jewish festival, so Jesus went to Jerusalem. 2Now near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem is a pool called Bethzatha in Hebrew, with five porches beside it. 3Crowds of sick people were lying in these porches—those who were blind, lame, or paralyzed. 4#5:4. This text is not in the earliest manuscripts and appears to have been added to explain verse 7. It is added here for information: “There they waited for the water to move, for an angel of the Lord would come down to the pool every so often and stir the water. Whoever got into the pool first after the water was stirred was healed of whatever disease they had.” It seems that this idea was what was believed by some at the time. 5One man who was there had been sick for thirty-eight years. Jesus looked at him, knowing he had been lying there for a long time, and asked him, 6“Do you want to be healed?”
7“Sir,” the sick man answered, “I don't have anyone to help me get into the pool when the water is stirred. While I'm trying to get there, someone always gets in before me.”
8“Stand up, pick up your mat, and start walking!” Jesus told him. 9Immediately the man was healed. He picked up his mat and started walking.
Now the day that this happened was the Sabbath. 10So the Jews said to the man who'd been healed, “This is the Sabbath! It's against the law to carry a mat!”
11“The man who healed me told me to pick up my mat and start walking,” he replied.
12“Who's this person who told you to carry your mat and walk?” they asked.
13However, the man who'd been healed didn't know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the surrounding crowd. 14Later on Jesus found the man in the Temple, and told him, “Look, now you've been healed. So stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.”
15The man went and told the Jews it was Jesus who had healed him. 16So the Jews started to harass Jesus because he was doing things on the Sabbath. 17But Jesus told them, “My Father is still working, and so am I.”#5:17. Or “My Father is always working, and I am working too.” 18This was why the Jews tried even harder to kill him, for not only did he break the Sabbath but also called God his Father, making himself equal with God.
19So Jesus explained to them, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can only do what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does the Son does as well. 20For the Father loves the Son, and reveals to him everything he does; and the Father will show to him even more incredible things that will completely amaze you. 21For just as the Father gives life to those he resurrects from the dead, in the same way the Son also gives life to those that he wants. 22The Father judges no one. He has given to the Son all the authority to judge, 23so that everyone may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Anyone who doesn't honor the Son doesn't honor the Father who sent him. 24I tell you the truth: those who follow#5:24. Literally, “hear.” what I say and trust the one who sent me have eternal life. They won't be condemned, but have gone from death to life.
25I tell you the truth: The time is coming—in fact it's here already—when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live! 26Just as the Father has life-giving power in himself, so has he given the Son the same life-giving power in himself. 27The Father also granted the authority for judgment to him, for he is the Son of man. 28Don't be surprised at this, for the time is coming when all those in the grave will hear his voice 29and will rise again: those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of condemnation.#5:29. See Daniel 12:2. 30I can do nothing by myself. I judge based on what I'm told,#5:30. Implying “told by God the Father.”, and my decision is right, for I'm not doing my own will but the will of the one who sent me. 31If I were to make claims about myself, such claims wouldn't be valid; 32but someone else gives evidence about me, and I know what he says about me is true. 33You asked John about me, and he told the truth, 34but I don't need any human endorsement. I'm explaining this to you so you can be saved. 35John was like a brightly-burning light, and you were willing to enjoy his light for a while. 36But the evidence I'm giving is greater than John's. For I am doing the work that the Father gave me to do, 37and this is the proof that the Father sent me. The Father who sent me, he himself speaks on my behalf. You've never heard his voice, and you've never seen what he looks like, 38and you don't accept what he says, because you don't trust in the one he sent.
39You search the Scriptures because you think that through them you'll gain eternal life. But the evidence they give is in support of me! 40And yet you don't want to come to me so that you might live. 41I'm not looking for human approval 42—I know you, and that you don't have God's love in you. 43For I've come to represent#5:43. Literally, “in the name of.” my Father, and you won't accept me; but if someone comes representing themselves, then you accept them! 44How can you trust in me when you look for praise from one another and yet you don't look for praise from the one true God? 45But don't think I will be making accusations about you to the Father. It's Moses who is accusing you, the one in whom you place such confidence. 46For if you really trusted Moses you would trust in me, because he wrote about me. 47But since you don't trust what he said, why would you trust what I say?”
