Jeremiah 8
8
1“At that time, declares the Lord, the bones of the kings of Judah, the bones of its officials, the bones of the priests, the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be brought out of their tombs. 2And they shall be spread #Deut. 4:19; 2 Kgs. 21:3; 23:5; [Job 31:26-28; Ezek. 8:16] before the sun and the moon and all the host of heaven, which they have loved and served, which they have gone after, and which they have sought and worshiped. #[Job 27:19] And they shall not be gathered or buried. #ch. 9:22; 16:4; 25:33They shall be as dung on the surface of the ground. 3#[Job 3:21, 22; 7:15, 16; Rev. 9:6] Death shall be preferred to life by all the remnant that remains of this evil family #ch. 23:3, 8; 29:14, 18; 32:37; Dan. 9:7in all the places where I have driven them, declares the Lord of hosts.
Sin and Treachery
4“You shall say to them, Thus says the Lord:
# [Rom. 11:11] When men fall, do they not rise again?
If one turns away, does he not return?
5Why then has this people #See ch. 7:24 turned away
in perpetual #See ch. 2:19 backsliding?
# ch. 9:6 They hold fast to deceit;
they refuse to return.
6 # [2 Pet. 3:9] I have paid attention and listened,
but they have not spoken rightly;
no man relents of his evil,
saying, ‘What have I done?’
Everyone turns to his own course,
# See Job 39:19-25 like a horse plunging headlong into battle.
7Even the stork in the heavens
knows her times,
and #Song 2:12 the turtledove, #Isa. 38:14 swallow, and crane#8:7 The meaning of the Hebrew word is uncertain
keep the time of their coming,
# [ch. 5:4, 5; Isa. 1:3] but my people know not
the rules#8:7 Or just decrees of the Lord.
8 # [Rom. 2:17, 18] “How can you say, ‘We are wise,
and the law of the Lord is with us’?
But behold, the lying pen of the scribes
has made it into a lie.
9 # [1 Cor. 1:19, 20] The wise men shall be put to shame;
they shall be dismayed #Job 5:13and taken;
behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord,
so what wisdom is in them?
10 # For ver. 10-12, see ch. 6:12-15 Therefore I will give their wives to others
and their fields to conquerors,
because from the least to the greatest
everyone #[Isa. 56:11]is greedy for unjust gain;
from prophet to priest,
everyone deals falsely.
11They have healed #ver. 21the wound of my people lightly,
saying, ‘Peace, peace,’
when there is no peace.
12Were they ashamed when they committed abomination?
No, #See ch. 3:3 they were not at all ashamed;
they did not know how to blush.
# [Hos. 4:5] Therefore they shall fall among the fallen;
when I punish them, they shall be overthrown,
says the Lord.
13When I would gather them, declares the Lord,
there are #Isa. 5:1, 2; Joel 1:7 no grapes on the vine,
# [Matt. 21:19; Luke 13:6] nor figs on the fig tree;
#
Isa. 1:30
even the leaves are withered,
and what I gave them has passed away from them.”#8:13 The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain
14Why do we sit still?
# ch. 4:5 Gather together; #ch. 4:5 let us go into the fortified cities
and perish there,
for the Lord our God has doomed us to perish
and has #ch. 9:15; 23:15; Lam. 3:15, 19; Amos 6:12; [Rev. 8:11] given us #ch. 23:15; Deut. 29:18poisoned water to drink,
because we have sinned against the Lord.
15 # ch. 14:19; Job 30:26 We looked for peace, but no good came;
for a time of healing, but behold, terror.
16 #
Job 39:20 “The snorting of their horses is heard #ch. 4:15 from Dan;
at the sound of the neighing #Judg. 5:22 of their stallions
# ch. 49:21; 51:29; Ps. 60:2 the whole land quakes.
They come #ch. 10:25; 47:2and devour the land and all that fills it,
the city and those who dwell in it.
17For behold, I am sending among you #[Lev. 26:22] serpents,
adders #Ps. 58:4, 5; [Eccles. 10:11] that cannot be charmed,
#
Num. 21:6
and they shall bite you,”
declares the Lord.
Jeremiah Grieves for His People
18My joy is gone; grief is upon me;#8:18 Compare Septuagint; the meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain
#
Isa. 1:5; Lam. 1:13, 22; 5:17 my heart is sick within me.
19Behold, the cry of the daughter of my people
from #Isa. 39:3 the length and breadth of the land:
“Is the Lord not in Zion?
#
Isa. 33:17 Is her King not in her?”
#
Deut. 32:21
“Why have they provoked me to anger with their carved images
and with their foreign idols?”
20“The harvest is past, the summer is ended,
and we are not saved.”
21For the wound of #ver. 11; ch. 14:17 the daughter of my people is my heart wounded;
#
Job 30:30; Lam. 4:8; Joel 2:6; Nah. 2:10 I mourn, and dismay has taken hold on me.
22Is there no #ch. 46:11; [Gen. 37:25]balm in Gilead?
Is there no physician there?
Why then has the health of the daughter of my people
not been restored?

Jeremiah 8
8
1“At that time,” says the LORD, “they will bring the bones of the kings of Judah, the bones of his princes, the bones of the priests, the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves. 2They will spread them before the sun, the moon, and all the army of the sky, which they have loved, which they have served, after which they have walked, which they have sought, and which they have worshipped. They will not be gathered or be buried. They will be like dung on the surface of the earth. 3Death will be chosen rather than life by all the residue that remain of this evil family, that remain in all the places where I have driven them,” says the LORD of Armies. 4“Moreover you shall tell them, ‘The LORD says:
“‘Do men fall, and not rise up again?
Does one turn away, and not return?
5 Why then have the people of Jerusalem fallen back by a perpetual backsliding?
They cling to deceit.
They refuse to return.
6 I listened and heard, but they didn’t say what is right.
No one repents of his wickedness, saying, “What have I done?”
Everyone turns to his course,
as a horse that rushes headlong in the battle.
7 Yes, the stork in the sky knows her appointed times.
The turtledove, the swallow, and the crane observe the time of their coming;
but my people don’t know the LORD’s law.
8“‘How do you say, “We are wise, and the LORD’s law is with us”?
But, behold, the false pen of the scribes has made that a lie.
9 The wise men are disappointed.
They are dismayed and trapped.
Behold, they have rejected the LORD’s word.
What kind of wisdom is in them?
10 Therefore I will give their wives to others
and their fields to those who will possess them.
For everyone from the least even to the greatest is given to covetousness;
from the prophet even to the priest everyone deals falsely.
11 They have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying,
“Peace, peace,” when there is no peace.
12 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination?
No, they were not at all ashamed.
They couldn’t blush.
Therefore they will fall amongst those who fall.
In the time of their visitation they will be cast down, says the LORD.
13“‘I will utterly consume them, says the LORD.
No grapes will be on the vine,
no figs on the fig tree,
and the leaf will fade.
The things that I have given them
will pass away from them.’”
14“Why do we sit still?
Assemble yourselves!
Let’s enter into the fortified cities,
and let’s be silent there;
for the LORD our God has put us to silence,
and given us poisoned water to drink,
because we have sinned against the LORD.
15 We looked for peace, but no good came;
and for a time of healing, and behold, dismay!
16 The snorting of his horses is heard from Dan.
The whole land trembles at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones;
for they have come, and have devoured the land and all that is in it,
the city and those who dwell therein.”
17“For, behold, I will send serpents,
adders amongst you,
which will not be charmed;
and they will bite you,” says the LORD.
18Oh that I could comfort myself against sorrow!
My heart is faint within me.
19 Behold, the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people from a land that is very far off:
“Isn’t the LORD in Zion?
Isn’t her King in her?”
“Why have they provoked me to anger with their engraved images,
and with foreign idols?”
20“The harvest is past.
The summer has ended,
and we are not saved.”
21 For the hurt of the daughter of my people, I am hurt.
I mourn.
Dismay has taken hold of me.
22 Is there no balm in Gilead?
Is there no physician there?
Why then isn’t the health of the daughter of my people recovered?
