The Destruction of Israel
1I saw the Lord standing beside#9:1 Or on the altar, and he said:
#
Zeph. 2:14 “Strike the capitals until #Zeph. 2:14 the thresholds #[Isa. 6:4] shake,
# See Judg. 16:26-30 and shatter them on the heads of all the people;#9:1 Hebrew all of them
and those who are left of them I will kill with the sword;
# [ch. 2:14] not one of them shall flee away;
not one of them shall escape.
2 # [Ps. 139:8-10] “If they dig into Sheol,
from there shall my hand take them;
# [Ps. 139:8-10] if they climb up to heaven,
from there I will bring them down.
3If they hide themselves on #ch. 1:2 the top of Carmel,
from there I will search them out and take them;
# [Job 26:5] and if they hide from my sight at the bottom of the sea,
there I will command the serpent, and it shall bite them.
4 # [Deut. 28:65] And if they go into captivity before their enemies,
there I will command the sword, and it shall kill them;
# See Jer. 21:10 and I will fix my eyes upon them
for evil and not for good.”
5The Lord God of hosts,
he who touches the earth and #Ps. 46:6 it melts,
and all who dwell in it mourn,
# ch. 8:8 and all of it rises like the Nile,
# ch. 8:8 and sinks again, like the Nile of Egypt;
6 # [Ps. 104:3, 5] who builds his upper chambers in the heavens
and founds his vault upon the earth;
# See ch. 5:8 who calls for the waters of the sea
and pours them out upon the surface of the earth—
# See ch. 4:13 the Lord is his name.
7“Are you not like #[Zeph. 3:10] the Cushites to me,
O people of Israel?” declares the Lord.
#
Ex. 20:2 “Did I not bring up Israel from the land of Egypt,
and #Jer. 47:4 the Philistines from #Gen. 10:14 Caphtor and the Syrians from #ch. 1:5Kir?
8Behold, #[ver. 4] the eyes of the Lord God are upon the sinful kingdom,
and I will destroy it from the surface of the ground,
#
Jer. 30:11; [Obad. 17] except that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,”
declares the Lord.
9“For behold, I will command,
# [Jer. 15:7; Matt. 3:12; Luke 3:17] and shake the house of Israel among all the nations
as one shakes with a sieve,
but no pebble shall fall to the earth.
10All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword,
who say, #[ch. 6:3]‘Disaster shall not overtake or meet us.’
The Restoration of Israel
11“In that day #Cited Acts 15:16I will raise up
the booth of David that is fallen
and repair its breaches,
and raise up its ruins
and rebuild it as in the days of old,
12 # [Obad. 19] that they may possess the remnant of Edom
and #Cited Acts 15:17, 18all the nations who are called by my name,”#9:12 Hebrew; Septuagint (compare Acts 15:17) that the remnant of mankind and all the nations who are called by my name may seek the Lord
declares the Lord who does this.
13“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord,
#
Lev. 26:5 “when the plowman shall overtake the reaper
and the treader of grapes him who sows the seed;
#
Joel 3:18
the mountains shall drip sweet wine,
and all the hills shall flow with it.
14 #
Jer. 30:3 I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel,
and #Isa. 61:4 they shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them;
#
Jer. 31:5
they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine,
and they shall make gardens and eat their fruit.
15 #
Jer. 24:6; Ezek. 34:29 I will plant them on their land,
# [Joel 3:20] and they shall never again be uprooted
out of the land #[Jer. 3:18]that I have given them,”
says the Lord your God.

Amos 9
9
1Then I saw the Lord standing beside the altar, and he said: Strike the tops of the Temple pillars so that the foundations shake, and shatter them on the heads of all the people below. Those who survive I will kill by the sword. None of them will escape, not a single one. 2Even if they dig down into Sheol,#9:2. The place of the dead, understood to be underground. I will catch them and pull them up. Even if they climb up to heaven, I will bring them down. 3Even if they hide themselves at the top of Mount Carmel, I will search for them and catch them. Even if they hide from me at the bottom of the sea, I will command the sea serpent to bite them. 4Even if they are driven into exile by their enemies, I will order them put to death by the sword. I will watch them carefully—and for evil, not for good. 5The Lord God of power touches the earth and it melts, and all who live there mourn. The earth rises up like the Nile River in flood, and then falls again.
6The Lord builds his upper rooms in heaven, and places the foundations on the earth. He calls for the water of the seas, and pours it down as rain upon the earth—the Lord is his name! 7Aren't the Ethiopians#9:7. Literally, “Cushites.” as important to me as you, people of Israel? asks the Lord. Yes, I brought the Israelites out of the land of Egypt, but I also brought the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir.
8Watch out! I'm watching this sinful kingdom.#9:8. Meaning Israel. I will eradicate it from the face of the earth. Yet I will not completely destroy the descendants of Jacob. 9See what I'm doing! I will give the command, and the people of Israel will be shaken among the nations like flour through a sieve, and nothing will fall to the ground. 10All the sinners of my people will be killed by the sword—all those who say, “Nothing bad is going to happen; no disaster will fall on us.”
11On that day I will restore the fallen kingdom of David; I will repair the broken walls, I will rebuild the ruins, and I will make it as it was in days of old. 12And they will possess what is left of Edom and all the nations that were once mine,#9:12. Literally, “called by my name.” declares the Lord. He will make this happen. 13Look! The time is coming, says the Lord, when the reaper will overtake the plowman, and the one who treads the grapes will overtake the one who sows the seed.#9:13. In other words, this will be a time of great plenty. The mountains will drip with sweet wine, and flow from all the hills. 14I will bring my people back from captivity, and they will rebuild the ruined cities, and they shall live in them. They shall plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will plant gardens and eat the fruit they produce. 15I will plant them in their own land, and they shall never be uprooted again from the land I have given them, declares the Lord your God.
