Jehoram Reigns in Judah
1 #
1 Kgs. 22:50
Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David, and Jehoram his son reigned in his place. 2He had brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariah, Michael, and Shephatiah; all these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of #[ch. 24:5]Israel.#21:2 That is, Judah 3Their father gave them great gifts of silver, gold, and valuable possessions, together with #See ch. 11:5fortified cities in Judah, but he gave the kingdom to Jehoram, because he was the firstborn. 4When Jehoram had ascended the throne of his father and was established, he killed all his brothers with the sword, and also some of the princes of #[See ver. 2 above]Israel. 5#For ver. 5-10, see 2 Kgs. 8:17-22 Jehoram was #[ver. 20]thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. 6#See 1 Kgs. 12:28-30; 16:31-33 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for #ch. 18:1; 2 Kgs. 8:18the daughter of Ahab was his wife. And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. 7Yet the Lord was not willing to destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and since he had promised to give #See 1 Kgs. 11:36; [2 Sam. 21:17]a lamp to him and to his sons forever.
8In his days Edom revolted from the #ver. 10rule of Judah and set up a king of their own. 9Then Jehoram passed over with his commanders and all his chariots, and he rose by night and struck the Edomites who had surrounded him and his chariot commanders. 10So Edom revolted from #ver. 8the rule of Judah to this day. At that time Libnah also revolted from his rule, because he had forsaken the Lord, the God of his fathers.
11Moreover, he made high places in the hill country of Judah and led the inhabitants of Jerusalem #Ex. 34:16; Lev. 17:7; 20:5into whoredom and made Judah go astray. 12And a letter came to him from Elijah the prophet, saying, “Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father, #ch. 17:3 ‘Because you have not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat your father, or #ch. 14:2-5in the ways of Asa king of Judah, 13#[See ver. 6 above] but have walked in the way of the kings of Israel and have enticed Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem #[See ver. 11 above] into whoredom, #See 1 Kgs. 16:31-33 as the house of Ahab led Israel into whoredom, and also you #ver. 4have killed your brothers, of your father’s house, who were better than you, 14behold, the Lord will bring a great plague on your people, your children, your wives, and all your possessions, 15and you yourself will have a severe sickness #ver. 18, 19with a disease of your bowels, until your bowels come out because of the disease, day by day.’”
16 # [1 Kgs. 11:14, 23] And the Lord stirred up against Jehoram the anger#21:16 Hebrew spirit of the Philistines and of #ch. 17:11; 22:1; 26:7the Arabians who are near the Ethiopians. 17And they came up against Judah and invaded it and carried away all the possessions they found that belonged to the king’s house, and also his sons and his wives, so that no son was left to him except #ch. 25:23; [ch. 22:6]Jehoahaz, his youngest son.
18And after all this the Lord struck him #ver. 15in his bowels with an incurable disease. 19In the course of time, at the end of two years, his bowels came out because of the disease, and he died in great agony. His people made no fire in his honor, #ch. 16:14like the fires made for his fathers. 20#[ver. 5] He was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. And he departed #[Jer. 22:18] with no one’s regret. #[ch. 24:25; 28:27]They buried him in the city of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.

2 Chronicles 21
21
1Jehoshaphat died and was buried with his ancestors in David’s City. His son Jehoram succeeded him as king.
Jehoram rules
2Jehoram’s brothers, the other sons of Jehoshaphat, were Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariah, Michael, and Shephatiah. All of these were the sons of Israel’s King Jehoshaphat. 3Their father had given them many gifts of silver, gold, and other valuables, along with fortified cities in Judah, but he gave the kingdom to Jehoram because he was the oldest son.
4When Jehoram had taken control of his father’s kingdom, he established his rule by killing all his brothers, along with some other leaders of Israel. 5Jehoram was 32 years old when he became king, and he ruled for eight years in Jerusalem. 6He walked in the ways of Israel’s kings, just as Ahab’s dynasty had done, because he married Ahab’s daughter. He did what was evil in the LORD’s eyes. 7Nevertheless, because of the covenant he had made with David, the LORD wasn’t willing to destroy David’s dynasty. He had promised to preserve a lamp for David and his sons forever. 8During Jehoram’s rule, Edom rebelled against Judah’s power and appointed its own king. 9Jehoram, along with all his chariots, crossed over to Zair.#21.9 Correction with 2 Kgs 8:21; MT with his officers The Edomites, who had surrounded him, attacked at night, defeating him#21.9 Or he defeated Edom and his chariot officers. 10So Edom has been independent of Judah to this day. Libnah rebelled against Jehoram’s rule at the same time because he had abandoned the LORD, the God of his ancestors. 11As if that wasn’t enough, Jehoram constructed shrines throughout Judah’s highlands, encouraged Jerusalem’s citizens to be unfaithful, and led Judah astray.
12A letter from the prophet Elijah came to Jehoram that read, “This is what the LORD, the God of your ancestor David, says: Because you haven’t walked in the ways of your father Jehoshaphat or the ways of Judah’s King Asa, 13but have walked in the ways of Israel’s kings and have encouraged Judah and Jerusalem’s citizens to be unfaithful, just as the house of Ahab did, and because you have even murdered your own brothers, your father’s family, who were better than you, 14the LORD will now strike your family, your children, your wives, and all your possessions with a heavy blow. 15You yourself will become deathly ill with a chronic disease that will cause your intestines to fall out.”
16Then the LORD made the Philistines and the Arabs, who lived near the Cushites, angry with Jehoram. 17They attacked Judah, broke down its defenses, and hauled off all the goods that were found in the royal palace, along with the king’s children and wives. Only Jehoahaz, Jehoram’s youngest son, was spared. 18After all this, the LORD struck Jehoram with an incurable intestinal disease. 19For almost two years he grew steadily worse, until two days before his death, when his intestines fell out, causing him to die in horrible pain. His people didn’t make a fire in his honor as they had done for his ancestors. 20He was 32 years old when he became king, and he ruled for eight years in Jerusalem. No one was sorry he died. He was buried in David’s City but not in the royal cemetery.
