1 Samuel 7

1And the men of Kiriath-jearim came and took up the ark of the Lord and brought it to the house of #2 Sam. 6:3Abinadab on the hill. And they consecrated his son Eleazar to have charge of the ark of the Lord. 2From the day that the ark was lodged at Kiriath-jearim, a long time passed, some twenty years, and all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.
Samuel Judges Israel
3And Samuel said to all the house of Israel, #1 Kgs. 8:48; Isa. 55:7; Hos. 6:1; Joel 2:12; See Deut. 30:2-10 “If you are returning to the Lord with all your heart, then #Gen. 35:2; Josh. 24:14, 23; [Judg. 10:16] put away the foreign gods and the #Judg. 2:13 Ashtaroth from among you and #[2 Chr. 19:3; 30:19; Ezra 7:10] direct your heart to the Lord #Deut. 6:13; 10:20; 13:4; Cited Matt. 4:10; Luke 4:8and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.” 4So the people of Israel put away the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and they served the Lord only.
5Then Samuel said, “Gather all Israel at #[Judg. 20:1]Mizpah, and I will pray to the Lord for you.” 6So they gathered at #[See ver. 5 above] Mizpah #[2 Sam. 14:14] and drew water and poured it out before the Lord #ch. 31:13; Neh. 9:1 and fasted on that day and said there, #Judg. 10:10“We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the people of Israel at Mizpah. 7Now when the Philistines heard that the people of Israel had gathered at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the people of Israel heard of it, they were afraid of the Philistines. 8And the people of Israel said to Samuel, “Do not cease to cry out to the Lord our God for us, that he may save us from the hand of the Philistines.” 9So Samuel took a nursing lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. And #Ps. 99:6; Jer. 15:1Samuel cried out to the Lord for Israel, and the Lord answered him. 10As Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to attack Israel. #ch. 2:10; [2 Sam. 22:14, 15; Ps. 18:13]But the Lord thundered with a mighty sound that day against the Philistines and threw them into confusion, and they were defeated before Israel. 11And the men of Israel went out from Mizpah and pursued the Philistines and struck them, as far as below Beth-car.
12Then Samuel #Gen. 28:18; 31:45; 35:14; Josh. 4:9; 24:26took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen#7:12 Hebrew; Septuagint, Syriac Jeshanah and called its name Ebenezer;#7:12 Ebenezer means stone of help for he said, “Till now the Lord has helped us.” 13#[Judg. 13:1]So the Philistines were subdued and did not again enter the territory of Israel. And the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. 14The cities that the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron to Gath, and Israel delivered their territory from the hand of the Philistines. There was peace also between Israel and the Amorites.
15 # ver. 6; ch. 12:11; [Judg. 2:16] Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. 16And he went on a circuit year by year to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah. And he judged Israel in all these places. 17Then he would return to #ch. 1:19 Ramah, for his home was there, and there also he judged Israel. #[ch. 14:35; Judg. 21:4]And he built there an altar to the Lord.

1 Samuel 7
7
1So the men of Kiriath-jearim came for the ark of the Lord and took it to Abinadab’s house on the hill. # 2Sm 6:3-4 They consecrated his son Eleazar to take care of it.
Victory at Mizpah
2Time went by until 20 years had passed since the ark had been taken to Kiriath-jearim. Then the whole house of Israel began to seek the Lord. 3Samuel told them, “If you # Ex 20:3 are returning to the Lord # Dt 13:4; 1Ch 19:3 with all your heart, # Dt 6:5; 30:10; Jl 2:12-14 get rid of the foreign gods # Jos 24:14,23; Jdg 10:16 and the Ashtoreths that are among you, dedicate yourselves to # Lit you and set your hearts on the Lord, and worship only Him. # Dt 6:13; Mt 4:10 Then He will rescue you from the hand of the Philistines.” 4So the Israelites removed the Baals and the Ashtoreths # Jdg 2:13 and only worshiped the Lord.
5Samuel said, “Gather all Israel at Mizpah, # Jdg 20:1 and I will pray to the Lord on your behalf.” # 1Sm 8:6; 12:17,19,23 6When they gathered at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out in the Lord’s presence. # 1Sm 1:15; Ps 62:8; Lm 2:19 They fasted that day, # Lv 16:29; Neh 9:1 and there they confessed, “We have sinned against the Lord.” # Jdg 10:10 And Samuel judged the Israelites at Mizpah.
7When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had gathered at Mizpah, their rulers marched up toward Israel. When the Israelites heard about it, they were afraid because of the Philistines. 8The Israelites said to Samuel, “Don’t stop crying out to the Lord our God for us, so that He will save us from the hand of the Philistines.”
9Then Samuel took a young lamb # Lv 22:27 and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. He cried out to the Lord on behalf of Israel, and the Lord answered him. # Ps 99:6; Jr 15:1 10Samuel was offering the burnt offering as the Philistines drew near to fight against Israel. The Lord thundered loudly # 1Sm 2:10; 2Sm 22:14 against the Philistines that day and threw them into such confusion that they fled before Israel. # Ex 23:27; Jos 10:10; Jdg 4:15 11Then the men of Israel charged out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines striking them down all the way to a place below Beth-car.
12Afterward, Samuel took a stone and set it upright # Jos 4:9 between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, # = Stone of Help explaining, “The Lord has helped us to this point.” 13So the Philistines were subdued # Jdg 13:1-15 and # LXX reads The Lord humbled the Philistines and they did not invade Israel’s territory again. # 1Sm 13:5 The Lord’s hand was against the Philistines all of Samuel’s life. 14The cities from Ekron to Gath, which they had taken from Israel, were restored; Israel even rescued their surrounding territories from Philistine control. There was also peace between Israel and the Amorites.
15Samuel judged Israel throughout his life. # 1Sm 7:6; 12:11 16Every year he would go on a circuit to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah and would judge Israel at all these locations. 17Then he would return to Ramah # 1Sm 1:1,19; 2:11 because his home was there, he judged Israel there, and he built an altar to the Lord there.
