The Philistines Reject David
1 # ch. 28:1 Now the Philistines had gathered all their forces at #ch. 4:1; Josh. 12:18 Aphek. And the Israelites were encamped by #Judg. 7:1 the spring that is in #Josh. 17:16Jezreel. 2As #Josh. 13:3 the lords of the Philistines were passing on by hundreds and by thousands, and David and his men were passing on in the rear #ch. 28:1, 2with Achish, 3the commanders of the Philistines said, “What are these Hebrews doing here?” And Achish said to the commanders of the Philistines, “Is this not David, the servant of Saul, king of Israel, who has been with me #[ch. 27:7] now for days and years, and since he deserted to me #[Dan. 6:5]I have found no fault in him to this day.” 4But #[See ver. 2 above] the commanders of the Philistines were angry with him. And the commanders of the Philistines said to him, “Send the man back, that he may return #ch. 27:6; 30:1 to the place to which you have assigned him. He shall not go down with us to battle, #[ch. 14:21]lest in the battle he become an adversary to us. For how could this fellow reconcile himself to his lord? Would it not be with the heads of the men here? 5Is not this David, of whom they sing to one another in dances,
# ch. 18:7; 21:11 ‘Saul has struck down his thousands,
and David his ten thousands’?”
6Then Achish called David and said to him, #See ch. 20:3 “As the Lord lives, you have been honest, and to me it seems right that #2 Sam. 3:25; 2 Kgs. 19:27; Ps. 121:8; Isa. 37:28you should march out and in with me in the campaign. For I have found nothing wrong in you from the day of your coming to me to this day. Nevertheless, the lords do not approve of you. 7So go back now; and go peaceably, that you may not displease the lords of the Philistines.” 8And David said to Achish, “But what have I done? What have you found in your servant from the day I entered your service until now, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?” 9And Achish answered David and said, “I know that you are as blameless in my sight #2 Sam. 14:17, 20; 19:27 as an angel of God. Nevertheless, #Josh. 13:3the commanders of the Philistines have said, ‘He shall not go up with us to the battle.’ 10Now then rise early in the morning #[1 Chr. 12:19, 22]with the servants of your lord who came with you, and start early in the morning, and depart as soon as you have light.” 11So David set out with his men early in the morning to return to the land of the Philistines. But the Philistines went up to #Josh. 17:16Jezreel.

Sh'mu'el Alef (1 Sa) 29

1The P’lishtim gathered all their army together at Afek, while Isra’el’s army pitched camp by the spring in Yizre‘el. 2The leaders of the P’lishtim were passing by with their hundreds and thousands; David and his men were bringing up the rear with Akhish. 3The chiefs of the P’lishtim asked, “What are these Hebrews doing here?” Akhish answered the chiefs of the P’lishtim, “This is David, who was a servant of Sha’ul, king of Isra’el. He’s been with me now for well over a year, and I haven’t found anything wrong with him between the time he deserted to me and now.” 4But the chiefs of the P’lishtim became angry and said to him, “Have the man return and go back to the place you set aside for him. Don’t let him go into battle with us, because on the battlefield he might become our enemy. What better way could there be for him to get reconciled with his lord than by [cutting off] the heads of our men? 5This is David! They used to dance and sing about him,
‘Sha’ul has killed his thousands,
but David his tens of thousands’!”
6So Akhish summoned David and said to him, “As Adonai lives, you have been upright; and I myself would be more than pleased to have you go on campaign with me; because I haven’t found anything wrong with you between the day you arrived and now. However, the chiefs don’t trust you. 7Therefore, now, go on back; and go in peace, so as not to do what appears bad to the chiefs of the P’lishtim. 8David said to Akhish, “But what have I done? What have you found in your servant during the time I’ve been with you that disqualifies me from going and fighting against the enemies of my lord the king?” 9Akhish answered David, “I know that you are as good, from my point of view, as an angel of God. Nevertheless, the chiefs of the P’lishtim have said, ‘He is not to go up with us to the battlefield.’ 10So get up early in the morning with the servants of your lord who came with you; and as soon as you are up and it gets light, leave.” 11David got up early in the morning, he and his men, to leave and go back into the land of the P’lishtim; while the P’lishtim continued up to Yizre‘el.
