Jeremias (Jeremiah) 28
28
1And it came to pass in that year in the beginning of the reign of Sedecias king of Juda, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, that Hananias the son of Azur, a prophet of Gabaon, spoke to me, in the house of the Lord, before the priests and all the people, saying:
2Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.
3As yet two years of days, and I will cause all the vessels of the house of the Lord to be brought back into this place which Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon took away from this place and carried them to Babylon.
4And I will bring back to this place Jechonias the son of Joakim king of Juda and all the captives of Juda that are gone to Babylon, saith the Lord: for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.
5And Jeremias the prophet said to Hananias the prophet, in the presence of the priests and in the presence of all the people that stood in the house of the Lord:
6And Jeremias the prophet said: Amen, the Lord do so: the Lord perform thy words, which thou hast prophesied: that the vessels may be brought again into the house of the Lord, and all the captives may return out of Babylon to this place.
7Nevertheless, hear this word that I speak in thy ears and in the ears of all the people:
8The prophets that have been before me and before thee from the beginning and have prophesied concerning many countries and concerning great kingdoms, of war and of affliction and of famine.
9The prophet that prophesied peace: when his word shall come to pass, the prophet shall be known, whom the Lord hath sent in truth.
10And Hananias the prophet took the chain from the neck of Jeremias the prophet and broke it.
11And Hananias spoke in the presence of all the people, saying: Thus saith the Lord: Even so will I break the yoke of Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon after two full years from off the neck of all the nations.
12And Jeremias the prophet went his way. And the word of the Lord came to Jeremias, after that Hananias the prophet had broken the chain from off the neck of Jeremias the prophet, saying:
13Go, and tell Hananias: Thus saith the Lord: Thou hast broken chains of wood, and thou shalt make for them chains of iron.
14For thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all these nations, to serve Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, and they shall serve him. Moreover also I have given him the beasts of the earth.
15And Jeremias the prophet said to Hananias the prophet: Hear now, Hananias: the Lord hath not sent thee, and thou hast made this people to trust in a lie.
16Therefore, thus saith the Lord: Behold, I will send thee away from off the face of the earth: this year shalt thou die. For thou hast spoken against the Lord.
17And Hananias the prophet died in that year, in the seventh month.

Jeremiah 28

The False Prophet Hananiah
1It was the fifth month of King Zedekiah’s fourth year as king of Judah. This was at the beginning of the king’s rule. At that time Hananiah the prophet spoke to me. He was the son of Azzur. And he was from the town of Gibeon. He was in the Temple of the Lord when he spoke to me. In front of the priests and all the people, Hananiah said: 2“The Lord of heaven’s armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘I will break the yoke the king of Babylon has put on Judah. 3Before two years are over, I will bring back everything that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took from the Lord’s Temple. 4I will also bring Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim king of Judah back here. And I will bring back all the other people of Judah as captives to Babylon,’ says the Lord. ‘So I will break the yoke the king of Babylon put on Judah.’”
5Then the prophet Jeremiah answered the prophet Hananiah. They were standing in the Temple of the Lord. The priests and all the people there could hear Jeremiah’s answer. 6He said, “Amen! Let the Lord really do that! May the Lord make the message you prophesy come true. May the Lord bring everything from the Lord’s Temple back from Babylon. And may he bring back to their homes all the people who were taken as captives.
7“But listen to what I must say to you and all the people. 8There were prophets long before we became prophets, Hananiah. They prophesied that war, hunger and terrible sicknesses would come. They would come to many countries and great kingdoms. 9But a prophet might prophesy that we will have peace. The message of that prophet might come true. If it does, only then can he be recognized as one truly sent by the Lord!”
10Then the prophet Hananiah took the yoke off Jeremiah’s neck and broke it. 11Hananiah said in front of all the people, “This is what the Lord says: ‘In the same way I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. He put that yoke on all the nations of the world. But I will break it before two years are over.’” After Hananiah had said that, Jeremiah left the Temple.
12Then the Lord spoke his word to Jeremiah. This was not long after the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke off of the prophet Jeremiah’s neck. 13The Lord said, “Go and tell Hananiah, ‘This is what the Lord says: You have broken a wooden yoke. But I will make a yoke of iron in the place of the wooden one! 14The Lord of heaven’s armies, the God of Israel, says: I will put a yoke of iron on the necks of all these nations. I will do that to make them serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. And they will be slaves to him. I will even give Nebuchadnezzar control over the wild animals.’”
15Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, “Listen, Hananiah! The Lord did not send you. And you have made the people of Judah trust in lies. 16So this is what the Lord says: ‘Soon I will remove you from the earth. You will die this year. This is because you taught the people to turn against the Lord.’”
17Hananiah died in the seventh month of that same year.
