PSALM 44
To the chief Musician. Of the sons of Korah. An instruction.
1O God#GodHebrew: Elohim with our ears have we heard, our fathers have told us, the work thou wroughtest in their days, in the days of old: 2Thou, by thy hand, didst dispossess the nations, but them thou didst plant; thou didst afflict the peoples, but them didst thou cause to spread out. 3For not by their own sword did they take possession of the land, neither did their own arm save them; but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst delight in them. 4Thou thyself art my king, O God#GodHebrew: Elohim command deliverance for Jacob. 5Through thee will we push down our adversaries; through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us. 6For I will not put confidence in my bow, neither shall my sword save me. 7For thou hast saved us from our adversaries, and hast put them to shame that hate us. 8In God#GodHebrew: Elohim will we boast all the day, and we will praise thy name for ever. Selah.
9But thou hast cast off, and put us to confusion, and dost not go forth with our armies; 10Thou hast made us to turn back from the adversary, and they that hate us spoil for themselves; 11Thou hast given us over like sheep appointed for meat, and hast scattered us among the nations; 12Thou hast sold thy people for nought, and hast not increased thy wealth by their price; 13Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a mockery and a derision for them that are round about us; 14Thou makest us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples. 15All the day my confusion is before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me, 16Because of the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth; by reason of the enemy and the avenger.
17All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely against thy covenant: 18Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy path; 19Though thou hast crushed us in the place of jackals, and covered us with the shadow of death. 20If we had forgotten the name of our God#GodHebrew: Elohim and stretched out our hands to a strange god#godHebrew: el 21Would not God#GodHebrew: Elohim search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart. 22But for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are reckoned as sheep for slaughter. 23Awake, why sleepest thou, Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever. 24Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction and our oppression? 25For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly cleaveth unto the earth. 26Rise up for our help, and redeem us for thy loving-kindness' sake.

Come to Our Help
To the choirmaster. #Ps. 42, titleA Maskil#44:1 Probably a musical or liturgical term of the Sons of Korah.
1O God, we have heard with our ears,
#
Ps. 78:3; Ex. 10:2; 12:26, 27; 13:8, 14, 15; Judg. 6:13; See Deut. 6:20-23 our fathers have told us,
what deeds you performed in their days,
# See Ps. 77:5 in the days of old:
2you with your own hand #Ps. 78:55; 80:8; Josh. 3:10 drove out the nations,
but #Ex. 15:17; 2 Sam. 7:10 them you planted;
you afflicted the peoples,
but #Ps. 80:9-11; [Jer. 17:8]them you set free;
3for not #Josh. 24:12; Hos. 1:7 by their own sword did they win the land,
nor did their own arm save them,
but your right hand and your arm,
and #See Ps. 4:6 the light of your face,
#
Deut. 4:37; 7:7, 8; 10:15 for you delighted in them.

Ps. 74:12 You are my King, O God;
# See Ps. 42:8 ordain salvation for Jacob!
5Through you we #[Deut. 33:17; Dan. 8:4] push down our foes;
through your name we #Ps. 60:12tread down those who rise up against us.
6For not in #[Ps. 33:16; 1 Sam. 17:47]my bow do I trust,
nor can my sword save me.
7But you have saved us from our foes
and have #See Ps. 35:4put to shame those who hate us.
8 # See Ps. 34:2 In God we have boasted continually,
and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah
9But you have #ver. 23; Ps. 43:2; 60:1, 10; 74:1; 108:11; See Ps. 89:38-45 rejected us and disgraced us
and #[Judg. 4:14; 2 Sam. 5:24]have not gone out with our armies.
10You have made us #Lev. 26:17; Deut. 28:25; Josh. 7:8, 12turn back from the foe,
and those who hate us have gotten spoil.
11You have made us like #[ver. 22] sheep for slaughter

12 # [Deut. 32:30; Judg. 2:14; 3:8; Jer. 15:13] You have sold your people for a trifle,
demanding no high price for them.
13You have made us #Ps. 39:8; 79:4; 89:41; 119:22; [Neh. 2:17] the taunt of our neighbors,
the derision and #[Ps. 80:6]scorn of those around us.
14You have made us #Jer. 24:9; See Job 17:6 a byword among the nations,
# See Job 16:4 a laughingstock#44:14 Hebrew a shaking of the head among the peoples.
15All day long my disgrace is before me,

at the sight of #Ps. 8:2the enemy and the avenger.

All this has come upon us,
