The Healing of a Paralytic
Mk. 2:1-12; Lk. 5:17-26
1 And entering a boat, He crossed over and came to His own city. 2 And behold, they brought to Him a paralysed man lying on a bed, and when Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Take courage, child, your sins are forgiven.” 3 And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This One is blaspheming.” 4 And Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why are you pondering on evil in your hearts? 5 For which is easier to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk’? 6 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on the earth to forgive sins”—then He said to the paralytic, “Getting up, take up your bed and go to your house.” 7 And he arose and went away to his home. 8 But when the crowds saw this, they were struck with fear and glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
The Calling of Matthew
Mk. 2:13-17; Lk. 5:27-32
9 And as Jesus was going away from that place, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax booth and said to him, “Follow Me.” So, after he stood up, he followed Him. 10 And it occurred that, as He was reclining at the table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining at the table with Jesus and His disciples. 11 And when they saw this, the Pharisees were saying to His disciples, “Why does Your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But when He* heard it, He said,* “Those who are strong have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: “I desire mercy and not sacrifice.” For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” *
The Question About Fasting
Mk. 2:18-22; Lk. 5:33-39
14 Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast frequently, but Your disciples do not fast?” 15 And Jesus said to them, “Can the friends of the bridegroom* mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But days will come, when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. 16 And no one puts a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the piece pulls away from the garment, and a more severe tear results. * 17 Neither do they put new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wineskins burst and the wine is poured out, and the wineskins are destroyed. Instead, they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
The Ruler's Daughter and the Woman with Hemorrhage
Mk. 5:21-43; Lk. 8:40-56
18 While He was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came and bowed down before Him, saying, “My daughter has just died; but come, lay Your hand on her and she will live.” 19 So Jesus rose and followed him, with His disciples. 20 And behold, a woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His garment, 21 for she said to herself, “If only I touch His garment, I will be healed.” 22 But when Jesus turned and saw her, He said, “Take courage, daughter; your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed from that hour. 23 And when Jesus came into the ruler’s house and saw the flute players and the crowd causing a disorder, 24 He said, “Go away, for the girl is not dead, but is sleeping.” And they began to deride Him. 25 But, after putting the crowd out, He entered and held her hand, and the girl arose. 26 And this report spread through all that region.
The Healing of Two Blind Men
27 And as Jesus was going away from that place, two blind men followed Him, crying out and saying, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” 28 And when He came into the house, the blind men came to Him; and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I have the power to do this?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith, let it be done to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened. Then Jesus issued a stern warning to them, saying, “See that no one knows this.” 31 But they went out and spread the report about Him throughout that whole region.
The Healing of a Mute Man
32 Now, as they were going away, behold, they brought to Him a mute man possessed by a demon. 33 And when the demon had been cast out, the mute spoke, and the crowds marvelled, saying, “Never has it been seen in this way in Israel.” 34 But the Pharisees were saying, “By the ruler of the demons, He is casting out demons.”*
The Three-fold Ministry of Jesus
35 And Jesus was going throughout all the cities and the villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness. 36 And when He* saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and cast aside, like sheep that did not have a shepherd. 37 Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few; 38 therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest that He may send out workers into His harvest.”
