Matthew 6
6
Concerning Philanthropic Acts
1 “And pay attention not to do your righteousness * before men * in order to be seen by them; otherwise, you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. *
2 Therefore, when you do philanthropic acts, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may have glory from men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 3 But you, when you do philanthropic acts, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your philanthropic giving may be in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will * reward you. *
Concerning Prayer
Lk. 11:2-4
5 And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, because they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, so that they may be seen by men. * Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your private room, and shutting your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. *
7 “But while praying, do not use meaningless and repetitive utterances like the pagans, for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Therefore, do not be like them, for your Father * knows what you have need of before you ask Him.
9 Therefore, you pray in this way:
“Our Father who is in heaven,
let Your name be revered as holy.
10 Let Your kingdom come,
let Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread,
12 and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one. *
14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15 But if you do not forgive men, * neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Concerning Fasting
16 “And when you fast, do not wear a mournful face, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces, so that they may appear to men as fasting. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you are fasting, anoint your head with olive oil and wash your face 18 so that you may not appear to men as fasting but to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. *
Treasures in Heaven
Lk. 12:33-34
19 “Do not accumulate for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but accumulate for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroy, and where thieves do not break in or steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be as well.
The Light of the Body
Lk. 11:34-36
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is diseased, your whole body will be full of darkness. So, if the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
God and Money
Lk. 16:13
24 “No one can serve two masters. For either he will hate the one and the other he will love, or he will be devoted to one and the other he will despise. You cannot serve God and money.
Anxiety
Lk. 12:22-34
25 “For this reason, I say to you, do not be anxious for your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor for your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
26 Look at the birds of the sky, that they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not more valuable than they? 27 And which of you, by being anxious, can add one cubit to his height?
28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Learn about the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 but I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed like one of these. 30 But if God clothes the grass of the field in this way, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more do so for you, O you of little faith?
31 Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 for the Gentiles seek after all these things. For your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
34 Therefore, do not be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will take care of itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
