Matthew 19

19
Concerning Divorce
Mk. 10:1-12
1 Now it occurred that, when Jesus had finished these sayings, He withdrew from Galilee and came to the region of Judea on the other side of Jordan. 2 And large crowds followed Him, and He healed them in that place.
3 And Pharisees came to Him, testing Him and asking whether it was lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause. 4 And in response, He said,* “Have you not read that the One who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘For this reason, a man will leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’? * 6 So, they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has united together, let no man * separate.” 7 They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?” 8 He* said to them, “Moses, in light of the hardness of your hearts, allowed you to divorce your wives, but at the beginning it was not so. 9 But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except on the grounds of sexual immorality, and marries another commits adultery.” *
10 The disciples* said to Him, “If this is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” 11 But He said to them, “Not everyone is able to * accept this saying, but only those to whom it has been given. 12 For there are eunuchs who have been so from their mother’s womb, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. * The one who is able to accept this, let him accept it.”
Little Children Brought to Jesus
Mk. 10:13-16; Lk. 18:15-17
13 Then children were brought to Him, so that He might lay His hands on them and pray, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 But Jesus said,* “Allow the children, and do not prevent them from coming to Me, for it is to such as these the kingdom of heaven belongs.” 15 And He laid His hands on them and departed from that place.
The Rich Young Man
Mk. 10:17-31; Lk. 18:18-30
16 And behold, someone came to Him and said, “Teacher,* what good thing shall I do in order that I may have eternal life?” 17 And He said to him, “For what reason do you ask Me about what is good? There is Only One who is good. But if you desire to enter life, keep the commandments.” 18 He said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness. * 19 Honour your * father and your mother, and, You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” * 20 The young man said to Him, “All these requirements* I have kept.* What do I still lack?” 21 Jesus said to him, “If you desire to be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. * Then, come, follow Me.” 22 But when the young man heard the* statement, he went away grieving, for he was one who had many possessions.
23 And Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly, I say to you that with difficulty a rich person will enter the kingdom of heaven! 24 And I say to you once more, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 25 So when the disciples heard this, they were exceedingly struck with amazement, saying, “Who then can be saved?” 26 But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men * this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” 27 Then, in response, Peter said to Him, “See, we have left everything and followed You. What then will there be for us?” 28 And Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you that in the regeneration, * when the Son of Man sits on His throne of glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or fields, for the sake of My name will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. 30 On the contrary, many who are first will be last, and the last first.”
