Revelation 22
22
1Then the angel showed me the river of life-giving water,#22:1, 17] Life-giving water: see note on Rev 7:17. sparkling like crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb#Ez 47:1–12. 2down the middle of its street. On either side of the river grew the tree of life#The tree of life: cf. Rev 22:14; see note on Rev 2:7. Fruit…medicine: cf. Ez 47:12. that produces fruit twelve times a year, once each month; the leaves of the trees serve as medicine for the nations. 3Nothing accursed will be found there anymore. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. 4They will look upon his face,#Look upon his face: cf. Mt 5:8; 1 Cor 13:12; 1 Jn 3:2. and his name will be on their foreheads. 5Night will be no more, nor will they need light from lamp or sun, for the Lord God shall give them light, and they shall reign forever and ever.#Is 60:20.
VII. EPILOGUE#The book ends with an epilogue consisting of a series of warnings and exhortations and forming an inclusion with the prologue by resuming its themes and expressions; see note on Rev 1:1–3.
6And he said to me, “These words are trustworthy and true, and the Lord, the God of prophetic spirits, sent his angel to show his servants what must happen soon.”#1:1. 7#22:7, 12, 20] I am coming soon: Christ is the speaker; see note on Rev 1:3. “Behold, I am coming soon.”#22:7, 14] Blessed: see note on Rev 1:3. Blessed is the one who keeps the prophetic message of this book.#12, 20 / 1:3.
8It is I, John, who heard and saw these things, and when I heard and saw them I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me. 9But he said to me, “Don’t! I am a fellow servant of yours and of your brothers the prophets and of those who keep the message of this book. Worship God.”#19:10.
10Then he said to me, “Do not seal up the prophetic words of this book, for the appointed time#The appointed time: see note on Rev 1:3. is near. 11Let the wicked still act wickedly, and the filthy still be filthy. The righteous must still do right, and the holy still be holy.”
12“Behold, I am coming soon. I bring with me the recompense I will give to each according to his deeds.#7, 20 / Ps 62:12; 2 Tm 4:14. 13I am the Alpha and the Omega,#1:8; 21:6; Is 41:4; 44:6. the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”#Christ applies to himself words used by God in Rev 1:8.
14Blessed are they who wash their robes so as to have the right to the tree of life and enter the city#The city: heavenly Jerusalem; see note on Rev 21:2. through its gates.#7:14–15; 22:2. 15Outside are the dogs, the sorcerers, the unchaste, the murderers, the idol-worshipers, and all who love and practice deceit.#21:8; Rom 1:29–32.
16“I, Jesus, sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the root and offspring of David,#The root…of David: see note on Rev 5:5. Morning star: see note on Rev 2:26–28. the bright morning star.”#1:1, 11–12; 22:6 / 2:28.
17The Spirit and the bride#Bride: the church; see note on Rev 21:2. say, “Come.” Let the hearer say, “Come.” Let the one who thirsts come forward, and the one who wants it receive the gift of life-giving water.#21:6; Is 55:1.
18I warn everyone who hears the prophetic words in this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, 19and if anyone takes away from the words in this prophetic book, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city described in this book.#Dt 4:2.
20#Come, Lord Jesus: a liturgical refrain, similar to the Aramaic expression Marana tha—“Our Lord, come!”—in 1 Cor 16:22; cf. note there. It was a prayer for the coming of Christ in glory at the parousia; see note on Rev 1:3. #7, 12 / Acts 3:20–21; 1 Cor 15:23; 16:22. The one who gives this testimony says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!
21The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all.

Ezek 47.1; Zech 14.8 The angel also showed me the river of the water of life, sparkling like crystal, and coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2#Gen 2.9; Ezek 47.12and flowing down the middle of the city's street. On each side of the river was the tree of life, which bears fruit twelve times a year, once each month; and its leaves are for the healing of the nations. 3#Zech 14.11Nothing that is under God's curse will be found in the city.

The Coming of Jesus
6Then the angel said to me, “These words are true and can be trusted. And the Lord God, who gives his Spirit to the prophets, has sent his angel to show his servants what must happen very soon.”
7 “Listen!” says Jesus. “I am coming soon! Happy are those who obey the prophetic words in this book!”
8I, John, have heard and seen all these things. And when I finished hearing and seeing them, I fell down at the feet of the angel who had shown me these things, and I was about to worship him. 9But he said to me, “Don't do it! I am a servant together with you and with your brothers the prophets and with all those who obey the words in this book. Worship God!” 10And he said to me, “Do not keep the prophetic words of this book a secret, because the time is near when all this will happen. 11#Dan 12.10Whoever is evil must go on doing evil, and whoever is filthy must go on being filthy; whoever is good must go on doing good, and whoever is holy must go on being holy.”

Gen 2.9; 3.22 Happy are those who wash their robes clean and so have the right to eat the fruit from the tree of life and to go through the gates into the city. 15But outside the city are the perverts and those who practise magic, the immoral and the murderers, those who worship idols and those who are liars both in words and deeds.

Is 11.1, 10 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to announce these things to you in the churches. I am descended from the family of David; I am the bright morning star.”

Is 55.1
The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come!”
Everyone who hears this must also say, “Come!”
Come, whoever is thirsty; accept the water of life as a gift, whoever wants it.
Conclusion

Deut 4.2; 12.32 I, John, solemnly warn everyone who hears the prophetic words of this book: if anyone adds anything to them, God will add to his or her punishment the plagues described in this book. 19And if anyone takes anything away from the prophetic words of this book, God will take away from them their share of the fruit of the tree of life and of the Holy City, which are described in this book.
20He who gives his testimony to all this says, “Yes indeed! I am coming soon!”
So be it. Come, Lord Jesus!
21May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with everyone.#22.21 everyone; some manuscripts have God's people; others have all God's people.
