Colossians 3

Mystical Death and Resurrection.#By retaining the message of the gospel that the risen, living Christ is the source of their salvation, the Colossians will be free from false religious evaluations of the things of the world (Col 3:1–2). They have died to these; but one day when Christ…appears, they will live with Christ in the presence of God (Col 3:3–4). 1If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.#2:12; Ps 110:1; Phil 3:20; Eph 2:6. 2Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. 3For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.#Rom 6:2–5. 4When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory.
Renunciation of Vice.#In lieu of false asceticism and superstitious festivals, the apostle reminds the Colossians of the moral life that is to characterize their response to God through Christ. He urges their participation in the liturgical hymns and prayers that center upon God’s plan of salvation in Christ (Col 3:16). 5Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly:#Mt 15:19; Rom 1:29–30; Gal 5:19–21; Eph 5:3, 5. immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry.#3:5, 8] The two lists of five vices each are similar to enumerations at Rom 1:29–31 and Gal 5:19–21. 6Because of these the wrath of God#The wrath of God: see note on Rom 1:18. Many manuscripts add, as at Eph 5:6, “upon the disobedient.” is coming [upon the disobedient].#Rom 1:18. 7By these you too once conducted yourselves, when you lived in that way. 8But now you must put them all away:#Put…away; have taken off; have put on: the terms may reflect baptismal practice, taking off garments and putting on new ones after being united with Christ, here translated into ethical terms. anger, fury, malice, slander, and obscene language out of your mouths.#Eph 4:22, 25, 31. 9Stop lying to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices#Rom 6:4, 6; Eph 4:22–25; Heb 12:1; 1 Pt 2:1; 4:2. 10#Image: see note on Col 1:15. and have put on the new self, which is being renewed, for knowledge, in the image of its creator.#Gn 1:26–27. 11Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian,#Scythian: a barbarous people from north of the Black Sea. slave, free; but Christ is all and in all.#1 Cor 12:13; Gal 3:27–28.
12Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,#Eph 4:1–2, 32; 1 Thes 5:15. 13bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do.#Mt 6:14; 18:21–35; Eph 4:32. 14And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection.#Rom 13:8–10. 15And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful.#Rom 12:5; 1 Cor 12:12; Eph 2:16; 4:3–4; Phil 4:7. 16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.#Eph 5:19–20. 17And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.#1 Cor 10:31.
The Christian Family. 18#3:18–4:6] After general recommendations that connect family life and the social condition of slavery with the service of Christ (Col 3:18–4:1), Paul requests prayers for himself, especially in view of his imprisonment (Col 3:2–3), and recommends friendly relations and meaningful discussions of Christian teaching with outsiders, i.e., non-Christians (Col 3:5–6). See note on Eph 5:21–6:9. Wives, be subordinate to your husbands, as is proper in the Lord.#Eph 5:22; Ti 2:5; 1 Pt 3:1. 19Husbands, love your wives, and avoid any bitterness toward them. 20Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord.#Eph 6:1. 21Fathers, do not provoke your children, so they may not become discouraged.#Eph 6:4.
Slaves and Masters. 22Slaves,#Slaves: within this table of duties in family and societal relations, involving wives and husbands, children and parents (Col 3:18–21), such as also appears in Eph 5:22–6:9, slaves here receive special attention because of the case of Onesimus the slave returning to his master (Col 4:9; Phlm 10–12). obey your human masters in everything, not only when being watched, as currying favor, but in simplicity of heart, fearing the Lord.#Eph 6:5; 1 Tm 6:1; Ti 2:9–10; 1 Pt 2:18. 23Whatever you do, do from the heart, as for the Lord and not for others, 24knowing that you will receive from the Lord the due payment of the inheritance; be slaves of the Lord Christ. 25For the wrongdoer will receive recompense for the wrong he committed, and there is no partiality.#Rom 2:11.

Your life hidden in Christ
1Therefore, if you were raised with Christ, look for the things that are above where Christ is sitting at God’s right side. 2Think about the things above and not things on earth. 3You died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ, who is your life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.
5So put to death the parts of your life that belong to the earth, such as sexual immorality, moral corruption, lust, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry). 6The wrath of God is coming upon disobedient people because of these things. 7You used to live this way, when you were alive to these things. 8But now set aside these things, such as anger, rage, malice, slander, and obscene language. 9Don’t lie to each other. Take off the old human nature with its practices 10and put on the new nature, which is renewed in knowledge by conforming to the image of the one who created it. 11In this image there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all things and in all people.
12Therefore, as God’s choice, holy and loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. 13Be tolerant with each other and, if someone has a complaint against anyone, forgive each other. As the Lord forgave you, so also forgive each other. 14And over all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. 15The peace of Christ must control your hearts—a peace into which you were called in one body. And be thankful people. 16The word of Christ must live in you richly. Teach and warn each other with all wisdom by singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17Whatever you do, whether in speech or action, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus and give thanks to God the Father through him.
18Wives, submit to your husbands in a way that is appropriate in the Lord. 19Husbands, love your wives and don’t be harsh with them. 20Children, obey your parents in everything, because this pleases the Lord. 21Parents, don’t provoke your children in a way that ends up discouraging them.
22Slaves, obey your masters on earth in everything. Don’t just obey like people pleasers when they are watching. Instead, obey with the single motivation of fearing the Lord. 23Whatever you do, do it from the heart for the Lord and not for people. 24You know that you will receive an inheritance as a reward. You serve the Lord Christ. 25But evildoers will receive their reward for their evil actions. There is no discrimination.
