Jonah's Prayer
1From deep inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God:
2“In my distress, O LORD, I called to you,
and you answered me.
From deep in the world of the dead
I cried for help, and you heard me.
3You threw me down into the depths,
to the very bottom of the sea,
where the waters were all round me,
and all your mighty waves rolled over me.
4I thought I had been banished from your presence
and would never see your holy Temple again.
5The water came over me and choked me;
the sea covered me completely,
and seaweed was wrapped round my head.
6I went down to the very roots of the mountains,
into the land whose gates lock shut for ever.#2.6 the land whose gates lock shut for ever: A reference to the world of the dead (see 2.2).
But you, O LORD my God,
brought me back from the depths alive.
7When I felt my life slipping away,
then, O LORD, I prayed to you,
and in your holy Temple you heard me.
8Those who worship worthless idols
have abandoned their loyalty to you.
9But I will sing praises to you;
I will offer you a sacrifice
and do what I have promised.
Salvation comes from the LORD!”
10Then the LORD ordered the fish to spew Jonah up on the beach, and it did.

Jonah 2
1¶ Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish’s belly,
2and said, I cried by reason of my tribulation unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and thou didst hear my voice.
3For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about; all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
4Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will see thy holy temple again.
5The waters compassed me about, even to the soul, the depth closed me round about; the weeds were wrapped about my head.
6I descended to the roots of the mountains; the earth put her bars about me for ever; yet thou hast brought up my life out of the grave, O Lord my God.
7When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer entered in unto thee in thy holy temple.
8Those that observe lying vanities forsake his mercy.
9But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that which I have vowed; that saving comes of the Lord.
10¶ And the Lord spoke unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
