David Becomes King of Israel and Judah
(1 Chr 11.1–9; 14.1–7)
1Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said to him, “We are your own flesh and blood. 2In the past, even when Saul was still our king, you led the people of Israel in battle, and the LORD promised you that you would lead his people and be their ruler.” 3So all the leaders of Israel came to King David at Hebron. He made a sacred alliance with them, they anointed him, and he became king of Israel. 4#1 Kgs 2.11; 1 Chr 3.4; 29.27David was thirty years old when he became king, and he ruled for forty years. 5He ruled in Hebron over Judah for seven and a half years, and in Jerusalem over all Israel and Judah for 33 years.

Josh 15.63; Judg 1.21 The time came when King David and his men set out to attack Jerusalem. The Jebusites, who lived there, thought that David would not be able to conquer the city, and so they said to him, “You will never get in here; even the blind and the crippled could keep you out.” 7(But David did capture their fortress of Zion, and it became known as “David's City”.)
8That day David said to his men, “Does anybody here hate the Jebusites as much as I do? Enough to kill them? Then go up through the water tunnel and attack those poor blind cripples.” (That is why it is said, “The blind and the crippled cannot enter the LORD's house.”)#5.8 Verse 8 in Hebrew is unclear.
9After capturing the fortress, David lived in it and named it “David's City”. He built the city round it, starting at the place where land was filled in on the east side of the hill. 10He grew stronger all the time, because the LORD God Almighty was with him.
11King Hiram of Tyre sent a trade mission to David; he provided him with cedar logs and with carpenters and stonemasons to build a palace. 12And so David realized that the LORD had established him as king of Israel and was making his kingdom prosperous for the sake of his people.
13After moving from Hebron to Jerusalem, David took more concubines and wives, and had more sons and daughters. 14The following children were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet.
Victory over the Philistines
(1 Chr 14.8–17)
17The Philistines were told that David had been made king of Israel, so their army set out to capture him. When David heard of it, he went down to a fortified place. 18The Philistines arrived at the Valley of Rephaim and occupied it. 19David asked the LORD, “Shall I attack the Philistines? Will you give me the victory?”
“Yes, attack!” the LORD answered. “I will give you the victory!”
20So David went to Baal Perazim and there he defeated the Philistines. He said, “The LORD has broken through my enemies like a flood.” And so that place is called Baal Perazim.#5.20 Baal Perazim: This name in Hebrew means “Lord of the Breakthrough”. 21When the Philistines fled, they left their idols behind, and David and his men carried them away.
22Then the Philistines went back to the Valley of Rephaim and occupied it again. 23Once more David consulted the LORD, who answered, “Don't attack them from here, but go round and get ready to attack them from the other side, near the balsam trees. 24When you hear the sound of marching in the treetops, then attack because I will be marching ahead of you to defeat the Philistine army.” 25David did what the LORD had commanded, and was able to drive the Philistines back from Geba all the way to Gezer.

David Anointed King Over Israel
1Ch 11:1–3
1#1Ch 11:1–3; Ge 29:14All of the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, “We are your bone and flesh. 2#1Sa 18:13; 2Sa 7:7Previously, when Saul was king over us, you were the one leading Israel out and in. Also, the Lord said to you: You will shepherd My people Israel, and you will be ruler over Israel.”
3#2Sa 2:4; Jdg 11:11So all of the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them before the Lord at Hebron. They anointed David king over Israel.
4#1Ch 26:31; 29:27David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. 5#2Sa 2:11; 1Ch 3:4He reigned over Judah from Hebron for seven years and six months, and he reigned over all of Israel and Judah from Jerusalem for thirty-three years.
David Conquers Jerusalem
1Ch 3:5–9; 11:4–9; 14:1–7
6#Jdg 1:8; Jos 15:63The king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, who were living in the land. They said to David, “You will not enter here; even the blind and the lame will turn you away”—thinking, “David cannot enter here.” 7#1Ki 2:10; 2Sa 6:12Nevertheless, David overthrew the stronghold of Zion, which is now the City of David.
8David said on that day, “Whoever defeats the Jebusites, let him go through the water shaft to reach the lame and the blind, who are despised by David.” Therefore, it is said, “The blind and lame shall not come into the house.”
9#1Ki 9:15; 9:24So David occupied the stronghold, and he called it the City of David. He built on all sides from the terraces inward. 10#2Sa 3:1David went on and became great, because the Lord, the God of Hosts, was with him.
11#1Ch 14:1; 1Ki 5:1–2King Hiram of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar wood, carpenters, and stonemasons, and they built a house for David. 12Then David understood that the Lord had appointed him king over Israel, and that He had exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.
13#1Ch 3:9; Dt 17:17David took more concubines and wives in Jerusalem, after having come from Hebron, and they bore him more sons and daughters. 14These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet.
David Defeats the Philistines
1Ch 14:8–17
17#2Sa 23:14; 1Ch 11:16When the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all of the Philistines went up to search for David, but David heard about this and went down to the stronghold. 18#Jos 15:8; Ge 14:5Now the Philistines had come and were spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. 19#2Sa 2:1; 1Sa 23:2So David asked the Lord, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You give them into my hand?”
The Lord said to David, “Go up, because I will certainly give them into your hand.”
20#Isa 28:21So David came to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there. He said, “The Lord has breached my enemies before me like bursting tides.” Therefore, he named that place Baal Perazim. 21#Dt 7:5The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his men carried them away.
22Once again, the Philistines went up and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. 23When David inquired of the Lord, He said, “You shall not go up. Circle around behind them and come against them opposite the trees. 24#Jdg 4:14; 2Ki 7:6When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the trees, pay attention, because at that point the Lord is going before you to defeat the army of the Philistines.” 25#1Ch 14:16So David did just as the Lord commanded, and he defeated the Philistines from Geba as far as Gezer.
