Matthew 16
16
1 And Pharisees and Sadducees approached him to test him, and they asked him to show them a sign from heaven.
2 But he responded by saying to them: "When evening arrives, you say, 'It will be calm, for the sky is red,'
3 and in the morning, 'Today there will be a storm, for the sky is red and gloomy.' So then, you know how to judge the appearance of the sky, but you are unable to know the signs of the times?
4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign. And a sign shall not be given to it, except the sign of the prophet Jonah." And leaving them behind, he went away.
5 And when his disciples went across the sea, they forgot to bring bread.
6 And he said to them, "Consider and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees."
7 But they were thinking within themselves, saying, "It is because we have not brought bread."
8 Then Jesus, knowing this, said: "Why do you consider within yourselves, O little in faith, that it is because you have no bread?
9 Do you not yet understand, nor remember, the five loaves among the five thousand men, and how many containers you took up?
10 Or the seven loaves among the four thousand men, and how many baskets you took up?
11 Why do you not understand that it was not because of bread that I said to you: Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees?"
12 Then they understood that he was not saying that they should beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.
13 Then Jesus went into parts of Caesarea Philippi. And he questioned his disciples, saying, "Who do men say that the Son of man is?"
14 And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, and others say Elijah, still others say Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
15 Jesus said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
16 Simon Peter responded by saying, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
17 And in response, Jesus said to him: "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father, who is in heaven.
18 And I say to you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.
19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound, even in heaven. And whatever you shall release on earth shall be released, even in heaven."
20 Then he instructed his disciples that they should tell no one that he is Jesus the Christ.
21 From that time, Jesus began to reveal to his disciples that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem, and to suffer much from the elders and the scribes and the leaders of the priests, and to be killed, and to rise again on the third day.
22 And Peter, taking him aside, began to rebuke him, saying, "Lord, may it be far from you; this shall not happen to you."
23 And turning away, Jesus said to Peter: "Get behind me, Satan; you are an obstacle to me. For you are not behaving according to what is of God, but according to what is of men."
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples: "If anyone is willing to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
25 For whoever would save his life, will lose it. But whoever will have lost his life for my sake, shall find it.
26 For how does it benefit a man, if he gains the whole world, yet truly suffers damage to his soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
27 For the Son of man will arrive in the glory of his Father, with his Angels. And then he will repay each one according to his works.
28 Amen I say to you, there are some among those standing here, who shall not taste death, until they see the Son of man arriving in his reign."

The Leaders Ask for a Miracle
1The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus. They wanted to trap him. So they asked him to show them a miracle to prove that he was from God.
2Jesus answered,# Some Greek copies do not have the rest of verse 2 and verse 3. “When you see the sunset, you know what the weather will be. If the sky is red, then you say we will have good weather. 3And in the morning if the sky is dark and red, then you say that it will be a rainy day. You see these signs in the sky, and you know what they mean. In the same way, you see the things that are happening now. But you don’t know their meaning. 4Evil and sinful people ask for a miracle as a sign. But they will have no sign—only the sign of Jonah.”# Jonah’s three days in the big fish are like Jesus’ three days in the tomb. The story about Jonah is in the book of Jonah. Then Jesus left them and went away.
Guard Against Wrong Teachings
5Jesus and his followers went across the lake. But the followers forgot to bring bread. 6Jesus said to them, “Be careful! Guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”
7The followers discussed the meaning of this. They said, “Did Jesus say this because we forgot to bring bread?”
8Jesus knew that they were talking about this. So he asked them, “Why are you talking about not having bread? Your faith is small. 9You still don’t understand? Remember the five loaves of bread that fed the 5,000 people? And remember that you filled many baskets with bread after the people finished eating? 10And remember the seven loaves of bread that fed the 4,000 people? Remember that you filled many baskets then also? 11So I was not talking to you about bread. Why don’t you understand that? I am telling you to be careful and guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.” 12Then the followers understood what Jesus meant. He was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread. He was telling them to guard against the teaching of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.
Peter Says Jesus Is the Christ
13Jesus went to the area of Caesarea Philippi. He said to his followers, “I am the Son of Man. Who do the people say I am?”
14They answered, “Some people say you are John the Baptist. Others say you are Elijah. And others say that you are Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15Then Jesus asked them, “And who do you say I am?”
16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
17Jesus answered, “You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah. No person taught you that. My Father in heaven showed you who I am. 18So I tell you, you are Peter.# The Greek name “Peter,” like the Aramaic name “Cephas,” means “rock.” And I will build my church on this rock. The power of death will not be able to defeat my church. 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. The things you don’t allow on earth will be the things that God does not allow. The things you allow on earth will be the things that God allows.” 20Then Jesus warned his followers not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.
Jesus Says That He Must Die
21From that time on Jesus began telling his followers that he must go to Jerusalem. He explained that the Jewish elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of the law would make him suffer many things. And he told them that he must be killed. Then, on the third day, he would be raised from death.
22Peter took Jesus aside and began to criticize him. Peter said, “God save you from those things, Lord! Those things will never happen to you!”
23Then Jesus said to Peter, “Go away from me, Satan!# Name for the devil, meaning “the enemy.” Jesus means that Peter was talking like Satan. You are not helping me! You don’t care about the things of God. You care only about things that men think are important.”
24Then Jesus said to his followers, “If anyone wants to follow me, he must say ‘no’ to the things he wants. He must be willing even to die on a cross, and he must follow me. 25Whoever wants to save his life will give up true life. And whoever gives up his life for me will have true life. 26It is worth nothing for a man to have the whole world if he loses his soul. He could never pay enough to buy back his soul. 27The Son of Man will come again with his Father’s glory and with his angels. At that time, he will reward everyone for what he has done. 28I tell you the truth. There are some people standing here who, before they die, will see the Son of Man coming with his kingdom.”
