Dead to Sin but Alive in Christ
1So do you think we should continue sinning so that God will give us more and more grace? 2Of course not! Our old sinful life ended. It’s dead. So how can we continue living in sin? 3Did you forget that all of us became part of Christ Jesus when we were baptized? In our baptism we shared in his death. 4So when we were baptized, we were buried with Christ and took part in his death. And just as Christ was raised from death by the wonderful power of the Father, so we can now live a new life.
5Christ died, and we have been joined with him by dying too. So we will also be joined with him by rising from death as he did. 6We know that our old life was put to death on the cross with Christ. This happened so that our sinful selves would have no power over us. Then we would not be slaves to sin. 7Anyone who has died is made free from sin’s control.
8If we died with Christ, we know that we will also live with him. 9Christ was raised from death. And we know that he cannot die again. Death has no power over him now. 10Yes, when Christ died, he died to defeat the power of sin one time—enough for all time. He now has a new life, and his new life is with God. 11In the same way, you should see yourselves as being dead to the power of sin and alive for God through Christ Jesus.
12But don’t let sin control your life here on earth. You must not be ruled by the things your sinful self makes you want to do. 13Don’t offer the parts of your body to serve sin. Don’t use your bodies to do evil, but offer yourselves to God, as people who have died and now live. Offer the parts of your body to God to be used for doing good. 14Sin will not be your master, because you are not under law. You now live under God’s grace.
Slaves of Goodness
15So what should we do? Should we sin because we are under grace and not under law? Certainly not! 16Surely you know that you become the slaves of whatever you give yourselves to. Anything or anyone you follow will be your master. You can follow sin, or you can obey God. Following sin brings spiritual death, but obeying God makes you right with him. 17In the past you were slaves to sin—sin controlled you. But thank God, you fully obeyed what you were taught. 18You were made free from sin, and now you are slaves to what is right. 19I use this example from everyday life because you need help in understanding spiritual truths. In the past you offered the parts of your body to be slaves to your immoral and sinful thoughts. The result was that you lived only for sin. In the same way, you must now offer yourselves to be slaves to what is right. Then you will live only for God.
20In the past you were slaves to sin, and you did not even think about doing right. 21You did evil things, and now you are ashamed of what you did. Did those things help you? No, they only brought death. 22But now you are free from sin. You have become slaves of God, and the result is that you live only for God. This will bring you eternal life. 23When people sin, they earn what sin pays—death. But God gives his people a free gift—eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Rom 3.8; 6.15. What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2#Rom 7.4,6; Gal 2.19; 1 Pet 2.24. By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3#Acts 2.38; 8.16; 19.5. Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4#Col 2.12. We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

2 Cor 4.10; Col 2.12. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6#Rom 7.24; Col 2.13. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the sinful body might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. 7#1 Pet 4.1. For he who has died is freed from sin. 8#2 Tim 2.11. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him. 9#Acts 2.24; Rev 1.18. For we know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10The death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11#Rom 7.4,6; Gal 2.19; 1 Pet 2.24. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
12Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. 13#Rom 6.19; 7.5; 12.1. Do not yield your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but yield yourselves to God as men who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments of righteousness. 14#Rom 8.2. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

Rom 3.8; 6.1. What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16#Mt 6.24; Jn 8.34; Rom 12.1. Do you not know that if you yield yourselves to any one as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, 18#Rom 8.2. and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. 19#Rom 3.5; 6.13; 12.1. I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once yielded your members to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now yield your members to righteousness for sanctification.

Mt 6.24; Jn 8.34. When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21#Rom 7.5; 8.6,13,21. But then what return did you get from the things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those things is death. 22But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the return you get is sanctification and its end, eternal life. 23#Rom 5.12,21; Gal 6.7-8. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
