Psalms 79

Psalm 79
A psalm of Asaph.
1The nations have come into your inheritance, God!
They’ve defiled your holy temple.
They’ve made Jerusalem a bunch of ruins.
2They’ve left your servants’ bodies
as food for the birds;
they’ve left the flesh of your faithful
to the wild animals of the earth.
3They’ve poured out the blood of the faithful
like water all around Jerusalem,
and there’s no one left to bury them.
4We’ve become a joke to our neighbors,
nothing but objects of ridicule
and disapproval to those around us.
5How long will you rage, LORD? Forever?
How long will your anger burn like fire?
6Pour out your wrath on the nations
who don’t know you,
on the kingdoms
that haven’t called on your name.
7They’ve devoured Jacob
and demolished his pasture.
8Don’t remember the iniquities of past generations;
let your compassion hurry to meet us
because we’ve been brought so low.
9God of our salvation, help us
for the glory of your name!
Deliver us and cover our sins
for the sake of your name!
10Why should the nations say,
“Where’s their God now?”
Let vengeance for the spilled blood of your servants
be known among the nations before our very eyes!
11Let the prisoners’ groaning reach you.
With your powerful arm
spare those who are destined to die.
12Pay back our neighbors seven times over,
right where it hurts,
for the insults they used on you, Lord.
13We are, after all, your people
and the sheep of your very own pasture.
We will give you thanks forever;
we will proclaim your praises
from one generation to the next.

Psalm 79

How Long, O Lord?
A Psalm of #Ps. 50, titleAsaph.
1O God, #Lam. 1:10 the nations have come into your #Ex. 15:17; See Ps. 74:2 inheritance;
they have defiled your #[Ps. 74:7] holy temple;
they have #Jer. 26:18; Mic. 3:12; [2 Kgs. 25:9, 10]; 2 Chr. 36:19laid Jerusalem in ruins.
2They have given #Deut. 28:26; Jer. 7:33; 16:4; 19:7; 34:20 the bodies of your servants
to the birds of the heavens for food,
the flesh of your #See Ps. 50:5 faithful to #Ps. 74:19the beasts of the earth.
3They have poured out their blood like water
all around Jerusalem,
and there was #Jer. 14:16; [2 Kgs. 9:10]no one to bury them.
4We have become #Dan. 9:16; See Ps. 44:13a taunt to our neighbors,
#
Dan. 9:16; See Ps. 44:13 mocked and derided by those around us.
5 # [Ps. 74:10; 80:4] How long, O Lord? Will you be angry #[Ps. 74:1; 85:5]; See Ps. 13:1 forever?
Will your #Ps. 78:58 jealousy #Ps. 78:21; 89:46burn like fire?

that #2 Thess. 1:8 do not know you,
and on the kingdoms

and laid waste his habitation.

Isa. 64:9 Do not remember against us #Jer. 11:10 our former iniquities;#79:8 Or the iniquities of former generations

Let #See Ps. 94:1the avenging of the outpoured blood of your servants

12Return #Gen. 4:15, 24; Lev. 26:21, 28; Prov. 6:31 sevenfold into the #Isa. 65:6, 7; Jer. 32:18 lap of our neighbors
