Psalm 38
A psalm of David. For the memorial offering.
1Please, LORD, don’t punish me when you are mad;
don’t discipline me when you are furious.
2Your arrows have pierced me;
your fist has come down hard on me.
3There’s nothing in my body that isn’t broken
because of your rage;
there’s no health in my bones
because of my sin.
4My wrongdoings are stacked higher than my head;
they are a weight that’s way too heavy for me.
5My wounds reek; they are all infected
because of my stupidity.
6I am hunched over, completely down;
I wander around all day long, sad.
7My insides are burning up;
there’s nothing in my body that isn’t broken.
8I’m worn out, completely crushed;
I groan because of my miserable heart.
9Everything I long for is laid out before you, my Lord;
my sighs aren’t hidden from you.
10My heart pounds; my strength abandons me.
Even the light of my eyes is gone.
11My loved ones and friends keep their distance
from me in my sickness;
those who were near me now stay far away.
12Those who want me dead lay traps;
those who want me harmed utter threats,
muttering lies all day long.
13But I’m like someone who is deaf,
who can’t hear;
like someone who can’t speak,
whose mouth won’t open.
14I’ve become like a person
who doesn’t hear what is being said,
whose mouth has no good comeback.
15But I wait for you, LORD!
You will answer, my Lord, my God!
16Because I prayed:
“Don’t let them celebrate over me
or exalt themselves over me when my foot slips,”
17because I’m very close to falling,
and my pain is always with me.
18Yes, I confess my wrongdoing;
I’m worried about my sin.
19But my mortal enemies are so strong;
those who hate me for no reason seem countless.
20Those who give, repay good with evil;
they oppose me for pursuing good.
21Don’t leave me all alone, LORD!
Please, my God, don’t be far from me!
22Come quickly and help me,
my Lord, my salvation!

Psalm 38

Do Not Forsake Me, O Lord
A Psalm of David, #Ps. 70, title; [1 Chr. 16:4]for the memorial offering.
1O Lord, #Ps. 6:1rebuke me not in your anger,
nor discipline me in your wrath!
2For your #Job 6:4 arrows have sunk into me,
and your hand #See Ps. 32:4has come down on me.
3There is #Isa. 1:6 no soundness in my flesh
because of your indignation;
there is no health in my #See Ps. 31:10bones
because of my sin.
4For my #Ps. 40:12; Ezra 9:6iniquities have gone over my head;
like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me.
5My wounds stink and fester
because of my foolishness,
6I am #Ps. 35:14; 42:5, 6, 11; 43:5 utterly bowed down and #Isa. 21:3 prostrate;
all the day I #[Job 30:28]go about mourning.
7For my sides are filled with burning,
and there is #[See ver. 3 above]no soundness in my flesh.
8I am feeble and crushed;
I #See Ps. 22:1groan because of the tumult of my heart.
9O Lord, all my longing is before you;
my #Ps. 6:6sighing is not hidden from you.
10My heart throbs; my strength fails me,
and #See Ps. 6:7the light of my eyes—it also has gone from me.
11My #Ps. 88:18; See Job 19:13-20 friends and companions #[Luke 10:31, 32] stand aloof from my #Ps. 39:10; Isa. 53:4, 8 plague,
and my nearest kin #[Matt. 27:55; Mark 15:40; Luke 23:49]stand far off.
12Those who seek my life #[Matt. 22:15]; Mark 12:13; Luke 20:20; See 2 Sam. 17:1-3 lay their snares;
those who seek my hurt #[2 Sam. 16:7, 8] speak of ruin
and meditate #Ps. 35:20treachery all day long.
13But I am like a deaf man; I do not hear,
like #Ps. 39:2, 9; Isa. 53:7; 1 Pet. 2:23a mute man who does not open his mouth.
14I have become like a man who does not hear,
and in whose mouth are no #[Job 23:4]rebukes.
15But for #Ps. 39:7; [2 Sam. 16:12]you, O Lord, do I wait;
it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer.
16For I said, “Only #[Ps. 13:4] let them not rejoice over me,
who #See Job 19:5 boast against me when my #Ps. 94:18foot slips!”
17For I am #Ps. 35:15; Jer. 20:10ready to fall,
and my pain is ever before me.
18I #See Ps. 32:5 confess my iniquity;
I am #[2 Cor. 7:9, 10]sorry for my sin.
19But my foes are vigorous, they are mighty,
and many are those who hate me #Ps. 35:19wrongfully.
20Those who #See Ps. 35:12 render me evil for good
#
Ps. 109:4 accuse me because I #[3 John 11]follow after good.
21Do not forsake me, O Lord!
O my God, be not #See Ps. 10:1far from me!
22 # See Ps. 40:13 Make haste to help me,
O Lord, my #See Ps. 27:1salvation!
