Mark 1
1
Beginning of good news
1The beginning of the good news about Jesus Christ, God’s Son, 2happened just as it was written about in the prophecy of Isaiah:
Look, I am sending my messenger before you.
He will prepare your way,
3 a voice shouting in the wilderness:
“Prepare the way for the Lord;
make his paths straight.”#1.3 Isa 40:3; Mal 3:1; Exod 23:20
John’s preaching
4John the Baptist was in the wilderness calling for people to be baptized to show that they were changing their hearts and lives and wanted God to forgive their sins. 5Everyone in Judea and all the people of Jerusalem went out to the Jordan River and were being baptized by John as they confessed their sins. 6John wore clothes made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He ate locusts and wild honey. 7He announced, “One stronger than I am is coming after me. I’m not even worthy to bend over and loosen the strap of his sandals. 8I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Jesus is baptized and tempted
9About that time, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and John baptized him in the Jordan River. 10While he was coming up out of the water, Jesus saw heaven splitting open and the Spirit, like a dove, coming down on him. 11And there was a voice from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I dearly love; in you I find happiness.”
12At once the Spirit forced Jesus out into the wilderness. 13He was in the wilderness for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among the wild animals, and the angels took care of him.
Jesus’ message
14After John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee announcing God’s good news, 15saying, “Now is the time! Here comes God’s kingdom! Change your hearts and lives, and trust this good news!”
Jesus calls disciples
16As Jesus passed alongside the Galilee Sea, he saw two brothers, Simon and Andrew, throwing fishing nets into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17“Come, follow me,” he said, “and I’ll show you how to fish for people.” 18Right away, they left their nets and followed him. 19After going a little farther, he saw James and John, Zebedee’s sons, in their boat repairing the fishing nets. 20At that very moment he called them. They followed him, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired workers.
Jesus throws a demon out
21Jesus and his followers went into Capernaum. Immediately on the Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and started teaching. 22The people were amazed by his teaching, for he was teaching them with authority, not like the legal experts. 23Suddenly, there in the synagogue, a person with an evil spirit screamed, 24“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are. You are the holy one from God.”
25“Silence!” Jesus said, speaking harshly to the demon. “Come out of him!” 26The unclean spirit shook him and screamed, then it came out.
27Everyone was shaken and questioned among themselves, “What’s this? A new teaching with authority! He even commands unclean spirits and they obey him!” 28Right away the news about him spread throughout the entire region of Galilee.
Jesus heals Simon’s mother-in-law
29After leaving the synagogue, Jesus, James, and John went home with Simon and Andrew. 30Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed, sick with a fever, and they told Jesus about her at once. 31He went to her, took her by the hand, and raised her up. The fever left her, and she served them.
Jesus’ ministry spreads
32That evening, at sunset, people brought to Jesus those who were sick or demon-possessed. 33The whole town gathered near the door. 34He healed many who were sick with all kinds of diseases, and he threw out many demons. But he didn’t let the demons speak, because they recognized him.
35Early in the morning, well before sunrise, Jesus rose and went to a deserted place where he could be alone in prayer. 36Simon and those with him tracked him down. 37When they found him, they told him, “Everyone’s looking for you!”
38He replied, “Let’s head in the other direction, to the nearby villages, so that I can preach there too. That’s why I’ve come.” 39He traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and throwing out demons.
A man with a skin disease
40A man with a skin disease approached Jesus, fell to his knees, and begged, “If you want, you can make me clean.”
41Incensed,#1.41 Most critical editions of the Gk New Testament read filled with compassion. Jesus reached out his hand, touched him, and said, “I do want to. Be clean.” 42Instantly, the skin disease left him, and he was clean. 43Sternly, Jesus sent him away, 44saying, “Don’t say anything to anyone. Instead, go and show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifice for your cleansing that Moses commanded. This will be a testimony to them.” 45Instead, he went out and started talking freely and spreading the news so that Jesus wasn’t able to enter a town openly. He remained outside in deserted places, but people came to him from everywhere.

Mark 1
1
The Kingdom Is Coming Now
1The beginning of the Good News of Yeshua ha-Mashiach, Ben-Elohim.
2As Isaiah the prophet has written, “Behold, I send My messenger before You, who will prepare Your way.
3The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way of Adonai, and make His paths straight.’”
4John appeared, immersing in the wilderness, proclaiming an immersion involving repentance for the removal of sins.
5All the Judean countryside was going out to him, and all the Jerusalemites. As they confessed their sins, they were being immersed by him in the Jordan River.
6John wore clothes made from camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.
7“After me comes One who is mightier than I am,” he proclaimed. “I’m not worthy to stoop down and untie the strap of His sandals!
8I immersed you with water, but He will immerse you in the Ruach ha-Kodesh.”
The Spirit Rests on Yeshua
9In those days, Yeshua came from Natzeret in the Galilee and was immersed by John in the Jordan.
10Just as He was coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens ripping open and the Ruach as a dove coming down upon Him.
11And there came a voice from the heavens: “You are My Son, whom I love; with You I am well pleased!”
12That instant, the Ruach drives Him into the wilderness.
13He was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by satan. And He was with the wild beasts, and the angels were taking care of Him.
Fishermen Follow Him
14Now after John was put in jail, Yeshua came into the Galilee, proclaiming the Good News of God.
15“Now is the fullness of time,” He said, “and the kingdom of God is near! Turn away from your sins, and believe in the Good News!”
16Passing along by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Simon’s brother Andrew casting a net in the sea, for they were fishermen.
17And Yeshua said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”
18Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.
19Going a little farther, He saw Jacob the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets.
20Immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired hands and followed Him.
Demons Flee at His Command
21And they went into Capernaum. Right away, on Shabbat, He entered the synagogue and began to teach.
22And they were astounded at His teaching, for He was teaching them as one having authority and not as the Torah scholars.
23Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out,
24“What have we to do with You, Yeshua of Natzeret? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are! You’re the Holy One of God!”
25Yeshua rebuked him, saying, “Quiet! Come out of him!”
26And the unclean spirit, after throwing the man into convulsions and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him.
27They were all so amazed that they asked among themselves, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him!”
28And immediately news about Him spread throughout the region surrounding Galilee.
The Hurting Become Whole
29As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with Jacob and John to the house of Simon and Andrew.
30Now Simon’s mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever. Right away, they told Yeshua about her.
31He came and raised her up by taking her hand. The fever left her, and she began to take care of them.
32When evening came, at sunset, the people brought to Him all the sick and those who were afflicted by demons.
33The whole town gathered together at the door.
34He healed many who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. And He would not allow the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.
35Very early, while it was still night, Yeshua got up, left, and went away to a place in the wilderness; and there He was praying.
36Then Simon and those with him hunted for Yeshua.
37And when they found Him, they said to Him, “Everybody’s looking for You.”
38He said to them, “Let’s go somewhere else, to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also—this is what I came for.”
39And He went throughout all the Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and driving out demons.
40A man with tza'arat comes to Him, begging Him and falling on his knees, saying, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.”
41Moved with compassion, Yeshua stretched out His hand and touched him. He said, “I am willing. Be cleansed.”
42Immediately, the tza'arat left him, and he was cleansed.
43Yeshua sent him away at once, sternly warning him.
44He said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go show yourself to the kohen. Then, for your cleansing, offer what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”
45But he went out and began to proclaim and spread the word, so much that Yeshua could no longer enter a town openly but had to stay out in wilderness areas. Still, they kept on coming to Him from everywhere.
