Journeys in Transjordan
1Next, we turned around and headed back toward the wilderness along the Reed Sea#2.1 Or Red Sea road, exactly as the LORD instructed me. We traveled all around Mount Seir for a long time.
2Eventually the LORD said: 3You’ve been traveling around this mountain long enough. Head north. 4Command the people as follows: You are about to enter into the territory of your relatives who live in Seir: Esau’s descendants. They will be afraid of you, so watch yourselves most carefully. 5Don’t fight with them because I will not give the tiniest parcel of their land to you. I have given Mount Seir to Esau’s family as their property. 6Of course you may buy food from them with money so you can eat, and also water with money so you can drink.
7No doubt about it: the LORD your God has blessed you in all that you have done. He watched over your journey through that vast desert. Throughout these forty years the LORD your God has been with you. You haven’t needed a thing.
8So we passed through the territory of our relatives who live in Seir, Esau’s descendants, leaving the desert road from Elath and from Ezion-geber. Next we turned and went along the Moab wilderness route. 9The LORD said to me: Don’t aggravate Moab. Don’t fight them in battle because I won’t give any part of their land to you as your own. I have given Ar to Lot’s descendants as their property.
(10Now the Emim#2.10 Or Frighteners had lived there before. They were big and numerous and tall—just like the Anakim. 11Most people thought the Emim were Rephaim, like the Anakim were. But the Moabites called them “Emim.” 12Additionally, the Horim#2.12 Or Cave-dwellers or Hurrians had lived in Seir previously, but Esau’s descendants took possession of their area, eliminating them altogether and settling in their place. That is exactly what Israel did in the land it took possession of, which the LORD gave to them.)
13“So then, get going. Cross the Zered ravine.”
So we crossed the Zered ravine.
14It took us a total of thirty-eight years to go from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the Zered ravine. It was at that point that the last of the previous generation, every one of fighting age in the camp, had died, just as the LORD had sworn about them. 15In fact, the LORD’s power was against them, to rid the camp of them, until they were all gone.
16Now as soon as all those of fighting age had died, 17the LORD said to me: 18Today you are crossing through the territory of Moab and Ar 19and you will come close to the Ammonites. Don’t aggravate them. Don’t fight with them because I won’t give any part of the Ammonites’ land to you as your own. I’ve given it to Lot’s descendants as their property.
20Now people thought that land was Rephaim territory as well. The Rephaim had lived there previously. But the Ammonites called them “Zamzummim.”#2.20 Or Mumblers 21They were large, numerous, and tall, just like the Anakim. But the LORD completely destroyed the Zamzummim before the Ammonites, and they took possession of that area, settling in their place. 22That is exactly what God did for Esau’s descendants, who live in Seir, when he completely destroyed the Horites in their presence, and they took possession of the Horites’ area, settling in their place to this very day. 23The Avvim,#2.23 Or Ruiners who had lived in settlements around Gaza, were completely destroyed by the Caphtorim, who had come from Caphtor. They replaced the Avvim there.
Victories in Transjordan
24“So get going. Cross the Arnon ravine. I have handed Sihon the Amorite king of Heshbon and his land over to you. It’s time to possess the area! It’s time to fight him in battle! 25Starting right now, I am making everyone everywhere afraid of you and scared of you. Once they hear news of you, they will be shaking and worrying because of you.”
26I then sent messengers from the Kedemoth desert to Sihon, Heshbon’s king, with words of peace: 27“Please let us#2.27 Heb here and through 2:29a is singular me, I. pass through your land. We promise to stay on the road. We won’t step off it, right or left. 28Please sell us food for money so we can eat; sell us water for money so we can drink. Let us pass through on foot— 29just as Esau’s descendants who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me—until we cross the Jordan River into the land that the LORD our God is giving to us.”
30But Sihon, Heshbon’s king, wasn’t willing to let us pass through his land because the LORD your God had made his spirit hard and his heart inflexible so that God could hand him over to you, which is exactly how it happened. 31The LORD said to me: Look! Right now I’m laying Sihon and his land before you. It’s time to take possession of his land!
32Sihon and all his forces came out to meet us in battle at Jahaz. 33But the LORD our God gave him to us. We struck him down, along with his sons, and all his forces. 34At that time, we captured all of Sihon’s cities, and we placed every town—men, women, and children—under the ban.#2.34 A technique of holy war that often involves total destruction, in which everything that is destroyed is dedicated to the deity who helps in the battle We left no survivors. 35The only things we kept for ourselves were the animals and the plunder from the towns we had taken. 36From Aroer, which is on the edge of the Arnon Ravine, to the town that is in the valley there,#2.36 Heb uncertain even as far as Gilead, there wasn’t a city that could resist us. The LORD our God laid everything out before us. 37But you didn’t go near the Ammonite lands or hillside cities alongside the Jabbok River, in compliance with all#2.37 LXX, Tg Jonathan; MT and all that the LORD our God had commanded.

Rentrée dans le désert

1Nous nous tournâmes, et nous partîmes pour le désert, par le chemin de la mer Rouge, comme l’Éternel me l’avait ordonné; nous suivîmes longtemps les contours de la montagne de Séir. 2L’Éternel me dit: 3Vous avez assez suivi les contours de cette montagne. Tournez-vous vers le nord. 4Donne cet ordre au peuple: Vous allez passer à la frontière de vos frères, les enfants d’Ésaü, qui habitent en Séir. Ils vous craindront; mais soyez bien sur vos gardes. 5Ne les attaquez pas; car je ne vous donnerai dans leur pays pas même de quoi poser la plante du pied: j’ai donné la montagne de Séir en propriété à #Ge 36:8.Ésaü. 6Vous achèterez d’eux à prix d’argent la nourriture que vous mangerez, et vous achèterez d’eux à prix d’argent même l’eau que vous boirez. 7Car l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’a béni dans tout le travail de tes mains, il a connu ta marche dans ce grand désert. Voilà quarante années que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, est avec toi: tu n’as manqué de rien. 8Nous passâmes à distance de nos frères, les enfants d’Ésaü, qui habitent en Séir, et à distance du chemin de la plaine, d’Élath et d’Étsjon-Guéber, puis nous nous tournâmes, et nous prîmes la direction du désert de Moab.

9L’Éternel me dit: N’attaque pas Moab, et ne t’engage pas dans un combat avec lui; car je ne te donnerai rien à posséder dans son pays: c’est aux enfants de Lot que j’ai donné Ar en propriété. 10(Les Émim y habitaient auparavant; c’était un peuple grand, nombreux et de haute taille, comme les Anakim. 11Ils passaient aussi pour être des Rephaïm, de même que les Anakim; mais les Moabites les appelaient Émim. 12Séir était habité autrefois par les Horiens; les enfants d’Ésaü les chassèrent, les détruisirent devant eux, et s’établirent à leur place, comme l’a fait Israël dans le pays qu’il possède et que l’Éternel lui a donné.) 13Maintenant levez-vous, et passez le torrent de Zéred. Nous passâmes le torrent de Zéred. 14Le temps que durèrent nos marches de Kadès-Barnéa au passage du torrent de Zéred fut de trente-huit ans, jusqu’à ce que toute la génération des hommes de guerre eût disparu du milieu du camp, comme l’Éternel le leur avait juré. 15La main de l’Éternel fut aussi sur eux pour les détruire du milieu du camp, jusqu’à ce qu’ils eussent disparu. 16Lorsque tous les hommes de guerre eurent disparu par la mort du milieu du peuple, 17l’Éternel me parla, et dit: 18Tu passeras aujourd’hui la frontière de Moab, à Ar, 19et tu approcheras des enfants d’Ammon. Ne les attaque pas, et ne t’engage pas dans un combat avec eux; car je ne te donnerai rien à posséder dans le pays des enfants d’Ammon: c’est aux enfants de Lot que je l’ai donné en propriété. 20(Ce pays passait aussi pour un pays de Rephaïm; des Rephaïm y habitaient auparavant, et les Ammonites les appelaient Zamzummim: 21c’était un peuple grand, nombreux et de haute taille, comme les Anakim. L’Éternel les détruisit devant les Ammonites, qui les chassèrent et s’établirent à leur place. 22C’est ainsi que fit l’Éternel pour les enfants d’Ésaü qui habitent en Séir, quand il détruisit les Horiens devant eux; ils les chassèrent et s’établirent à leur place, jusqu’à ce jour. 23Les Avviens, qui habitaient dans des villages jusqu’à Gaza, furent détruits par les Caphtorim, sortis de Caphtor, qui s’établirent à leur place.) 24Levez-vous, partez, et passez le torrent de l’Arnon. Vois, je livre entre tes mains Sihon, roi de Hesbon, l’Amoréen et son pays. Commence la conquête, fais-lui la guerre! 25Je vais répandre dès aujourd’hui la frayeur et la crainte de toi sur tous les peuples qui sont sous le ciel; et, au bruit de ta renommée, ils trembleront et seront saisis d’angoisse à cause de toi.

No 21:21. Jg 11; 19. J’envoyai, du désert de Kedémoth, des messagers à Sihon, roi de Hesbon, avec des paroles de paix. Je lui fis dire: 27#No 21:21, 22.Laisse-moi passer par ton pays; je suivrai la grande route, sans m’écarter ni à droite ni à gauche. 28Tu me vendras à prix d’argent la nourriture que je mangerai, et tu me donneras à prix d’argent l’eau que je boirai; je ne ferai que passer avec mes pieds. 29C’est ce que m’ont accordé les enfants d’Ésaü qui habitent en Séir, et les Moabites qui demeurent à Ar. Accorde-le aussi, jusqu’à ce que je passe le Jourdain pour entrer au pays que l’Éternel, notre Dieu, nous donne. 30Mais Sihon, roi de Hesbon, ne voulut point nous laisser passer chez lui; car l’Éternel, ton Dieu, rendit son esprit inflexible et endurcit son cœur, afin de le livrer entre tes mains, comme tu le vois aujourd’hui. 31L’Éternel me dit: Vois, je te livre dès maintenant Sihon et son pays. 32#No 21:23.Sihon sortit à notre rencontre, avec tout son peuple, pour nous combattre à Jahats. 33#De 29:7.L’Éternel, notre Dieu, nous le livra, et nous le battîmes, lui et ses fils, et tout son peuple. 34Nous prîmes alors toutes ses villes, et nous les dévouâmes par interdit, hommes, femmes et petits enfants, sans en laisser échapper un seul. 35Seulement, nous pillâmes pour nous le bétail et le butin des villes que nous avions prises. 36Depuis Aroër sur les bords du torrent de l’Arnon, et la ville qui est dans la vallée, jusqu’à Galaad, il n’y eut pas de ville trop forte pour nous: l’Éternel, notre Dieu, nous livra tout. 37Mais tu n’approchas point du pays des enfants d’Ammon, de tous les bords du torrent de Jabbok, des villes de la montagne, de tous les lieux que l’Éternel, notre Dieu, t’avait défendu d’attaquer.
