The Genealogy of Jesus Christ

1The book of the genealogy of #1:1 Heb Yeshua (Joshua), meaning Yahweh savesJesus #1:1 MessiahChrist, the son of David, the son of Abraham:

2¶Abraham #1:2 Lit fathered, so in genealogywas the father of Isaac,

and Isaac was the father of Jacob,

and Jacob was the father of #1:2 Gr Judas; names of people in the Old Testament are given in their Old Testament formJudah and his brothers.

3And Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar,

and Perez was the father of Hezron,

and Hezron was the father of #1:3 Gr AramRam.

4And Ram was the father of Amminadab,

and Amminadab was the father of Nahshon,

and Nahshon was the father of Salmon.

5And Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab,

and Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth,

and Obed was the father of Jesse.

6And Jesse was the father of David the king.

And David was the father of Solomon by #1:6 Lit her of Uriahthe wife of Uriah.

7And Solomon was the father of Rehoboam,

and Rehoboam was the father of Abijah,

and Abijah was the father of #1:7 Gr AsaphAsa.

8And Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat,

and Jehoshaphat was the father of #1:8 Also Gr for Jehoram in 2 Kin 8:16, cf. 1 Chr 3:11Joram,

and Joram was the father of Uzziah.

9And Uzziah was the father of #1:9 Gr JoathamJotham,

and Jotham was the father of Ahaz,

and Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah.

10And Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh,

and Manasseh was the father of #1:10 Gr AmosAmon,

and Amon was the father of Josiah.

11And Josiah was the father of #1:11 Jehoiachin in 2 Kin 24:15Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon.

12¶And after the deportation to Babylon:

Jeconiah was the father of #1:12 Gr SalathielShealtiel,

and Shealtiel was the father of Zerubbabel.

13And Zerubbabel was the father of #1:13 Gr Abioud, usually spelled AbiudAbihud,

and Abihud was the father of Eliakim,

and Eliakim was the father of Azor.

14And Azor was the father of Zadok,

and Zadok was the father of Achim,

and Achim was the father of Eliud.

15And Eliud was the father of Eleazar,

and Eleazar was the father of Matthan,

and Matthan was the father of Jacob.

16And Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called #1:16 MessiahChrist.

17Therefore all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to #1:17 Messiahthe Christ, fourteen generations.

The Conception and Birth of Jesus

18Now the birth of Jesus #1:18 The MessiahChrist was as follows: when His mother Mary had been #1:18 The first stage of marriage in ancient Jewish culture, usually lasting for a year before the wedding night, more legal than an engagementbetrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 19And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned #1:19 Or to divorce herto send her away secretly. 20But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the #1:20 In OT, Yahweh, cf. 2 Kin 1:3Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for #1:20 Lit that whichthe One who has been #1:20 Lit begottenconceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21And she will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for #1:21 Lit He HimselfHe will save His people from their sins.” 22Now all this #1:22 Lit has happenedtook place in order that what was spoken by the #1:22 In OT, Yahweh, cf. The Family History of Jesus

1This is the family history of Jesus Christ. He came from the family of David, and David came from the family of Abraham.

2Abraham was the father of Isaac.

Isaac was the father of Jacob.

Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers.

3Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah.

(Their mother was Tamar.)

Perez was the father of Hezron.

Hezron was the father of Ram.

4Ram was the father of Amminadab.

11Josiah was the grandfather of Jehoiachin and his brothers.

(This was at the time that the people were taken to Babylon.)

12After they were taken to Babylon:

Jehoiachin was the father of Shealtiel.

Shealtiel was the grandfather of Zerubbabel.

13Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud.

Abiud was the father of Eliakim.

Eliakim was the father of Azor.

14Azor was the father of Zadok.

Zadok was the father of Akim.

Akim was the father of Eliud.

15Eliud was the father of Eleazar.

Eleazar was the father of Matthan.

Matthan was the father of Jacob.

16Jacob was the father of Joseph.

Joseph was the husband of Mary,

and Mary was the mother of Jesus.

Jesus is called the Christ.

17So there were fourteen generations from Abraham to David. And there were fourteen generations from David until the people were taken to Babylon. And there were fourteen generations from the time when the people were taken to Babylon until Christ was born.

The Birth of Jesus Christ

18This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. His mother Mary was engaged to marry Joseph, but before they married, she learned she was pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit. 19Because Mary’s husband, Joseph, was a good man, he did not want to disgrace her in public, so he planned to divorce her secretly.

20While Joseph thought about these things, an angel of the Lord came to him in a dream. The angel said, “Joseph, descendant of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because the baby in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

22All this happened to bring about what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23“The virgin will be pregnant. She will have a son, and they will name him Immanuel,” which means “God is with us.”

24When Joseph woke up, he did what the Lord’s angel had told him to do. Joseph took Mary as his wife, 25but he did not have sexual relations with her until she gave birth to the son. And Joseph named him Jesus.
