Yoḥanan (John) 8
8
1And יהושע went to the Mount of Olives.
2And at dawn He came again into the Set-apart Place, and all the people were coming to Him. And having sat down, He was teaching them.
3And the scribes and Pharisees brought to Him a woman caught in adultery. And having set her in the midst,
4they said to Him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
5And in the Torah Mosheh commanded us that such should be stoned. What then do You say?
6And this they said, trying Him, so that they might accuse Him. But יהושע, bending down, wrote on the ground with the finger, as though He did not hear.
7But as they kept on questioning Him, He straightened up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”
8And bending down again, He wrote on the ground.
9And when they heard it, being reproved by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning from the older ones until the last. And יהושע was left alone, and the woman standing in the middle.
10And יהושע, straightening up and seeing no one but the woman, said to her, “Woman, where are those accusers of yours? Did no one condemn you?”
11And she said, “No one, Master.” And יהושע said to her, “Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more.”#See also John 5:14; Rom. 6:16-20; 1Cor. 15:34; 1Pe. 2:24; 1Pe. 4:1, 2; 1John 3:4-10; 1John 5:18
12Therefore יהושע spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall by no means walk in darkness, but possess the light of life.”#See also John 11:9, 10 Chapter 7:53-8:11 does not appear in the Aramaic Peshitta or Aramaic Old Syriac texts.
13The Pharisees, therefore, said to Him, “You bear witness about Yourself, Your witness is not true.”
14יהושע answered and said to them, “Even if I witness concerning Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know from where I come, or where I go.
15“You judge according to the flesh, I judge no one.
16“But even if I do judge, My judgment is true, because I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me.
17“And in your Torah also, it has been written that the witness of two men is true.
18“I am One who witnesses concerning Myself, and the Father who sent Me witnesses concerning Me.”
19Therefore they said to Him, “Where is Your Father?” יהושע answered, “You know neither Me nor My Father. If you knew Me, you would have known My Father also.”
20These words יהושע spoke in the treasury, teaching in the Set-apart Place. And no one laid hands on Him, because His hour had not yet come.
21Therefore יהושע said to them again, “I am going away, and you shall seek Me, and you shall die in your sin. Where I go you are unable to come.”
22Then the Yehuḏim said, “Shall He kill Himself, because He says, ‘Where I go you are unable to come’?”
23And He said to them, “You are from below, I am from above. You are of this world, I am not of this world.
24Therefore I said to you that you shall die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I am He, you shall die in your sins.
25Then they said to Him, “Who are You?” And יהושע said to them, “Altogether that which I even say to you!
26I have much to say and to judge concerning you. But He who sent Me is true, and what I heard from Him, these Words I speak to the world.”
27They did not know that He spoke to them of the Father.
28So יהושע said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Aḏam, then you shall know that I am He, and that I do none at all of Myself, but as My Father taught Me, these words I speak.
29And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone, for I always do what pleases Him.
30As He was speaking these words, many believed in Him.
31So יהושע said to those Yehuḏim who believed Him, “If you stay in My Word, you are truly My taught ones,
32and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
33They answered Him, “We are the seed of Aḇraham, and have been servants to no one at any time. How do you say, ‘You shall become free’?”
34יהושע answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone doing sin is a servant of sin.
35“And the servant does not stay in the house forever – a son stays forever.
36“If, then, the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
37“I know that you are the seed of Aḇraham, but you seek to kill Me, because My Word has no place in you.
38“I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”
39They answered and said to Him, “Aḇraham is our father.”#See footnote at Mat. 3:9; and also Rom. 9:8 יהושע said to them, “If you were Aḇraham’s children, you would do the works of Aḇraham.
40“But now you seek to kill Me, a Man who has spoken to you the truth which I heard from Elohim. Aḇraham did not do this.
41“You do the works of your father.” Then they said to Him, “We were not born of whoring, we have one Father: Elohim.”
42יהושע said to them, “If Elohim were your Father, you would love Me, for I came forth from Elohim, and am here. For I have not come of Myself, but He sent Me.
43“Why do you not know what I say? Because you are unable to hear My Word.
44“You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you wish to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks the lie, he speaks of his own, for he is a liar and the father of it.
45“And because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me.
46Who of you proves Me wrong concerning sin? And if I speak the truth, why do you not believe Me?”
47He who is of Elohim hears the Words of Elohim, therefore you do not hear because you are not of Elohim.
48The Yehuḏim answered and said to Him, “Do we not say well that You are a Shomeroni and have a demon?”
49יהושע answered, “I do not have a demon, but I value My Father, and you do not value Me.
50“And I do not seek My own esteem, there is One who is seeking and is judging.
51“Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone guards My Word he shall never see death at all.”
52The Yehuḏim said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon! Aḇraham died, and the prophets. And You say, ‘If anyone guards My Word he shall never taste death at all.’
53Are You greater than our father Aḇraham, who died? And the prophets died. Whom do You make Yourself?
54יהושע answered, “If I esteem Myself, My esteem is none at all. It is My Father who esteems Me, of whom you say that He is your Elohim.
55And you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, ‘I do not know Him,’ I shall be like you, a liar. But I do know Him and I guard His Word.#See also John 15:10
56Your father Aḇraham was glad that he should see My day, and he saw it and did rejoice.
57The Yehuḏim, therefore, said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Aḇraham?”
58יהושע said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Aḇraham came to be, I am.”#See also John 1:1; John 6:62; John 17:5; Heb. 11:26
59Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but יהושע was hidden and went out of the Set-apart Place, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

John 8
8
1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
2 Now very early in the morning, he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him. He sat down and taught them. 3The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman taken in adultery. Having set her in the middle, 4they told him, “Teacher, we found this woman in adultery, in the very act. 5Now in our law, Moses commanded us to stone such women.#Leviticus 20:10; Deuteronomy 22:22 What then do you say about her?” 6They said this testing him, that they might have something to accuse him of.
But Jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with his finger. 7But when they continued asking him, he looked up and said to them, “He who is without sin amongst you, let him throw the first stone at her.” 8Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground with his finger.
9 They, when they heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning from the oldest, even to the last. Jesus was left alone with the woman where she was, in the middle. 10Jesus, standing up, saw her and said, “Woman, where are your accusers? Did no one condemn you?”
11 She said, “No one, Lord.”
Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more.”#8:11 NU includes John 7:53–John 8:11, but puts brackets around it to indicate that the textual critics had less confidence that this was original.
12 Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world.#Isaiah 60:1 He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”
13 The Pharisees therefore said to him, “You testify about yourself. Your testimony is not valid.”
14 Jesus answered them, “Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from, and where I am going; but you don’t know where I came from, or where I am going. 15You judge according to the flesh. I judge no one. 16Even if I do judge, my judgement is true, for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent me. 17It’s also written in your law that the testimony of two people is valid.#Deuteronomy 17:6; 19:15 18I am one who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me.”
19 They said therefore to him, “Where is your Father?”
Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” 20Jesus spoke these words in the treasury, as he taught in the temple. Yet no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come. 21Jesus said therefore again to them, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sins. Where I go, you can’t come.”
22 The Jews therefore said, “Will he kill himself, because he says, ‘Where I am going, you can’t come’?”
23 He said to them, “You are from beneath. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world. 24I said therefore to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am#8:24 or, I AM he, you will die in your sins.”
25 They said therefore to him, “Who are you?”
Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning. 26I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you. However, he who sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these I say to the world.”
27 They didn’t understand that he spoke to them about the Father. 28Jesus therefore said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and I do nothing of myself, but as my Father taught me, I say these things. 29He who sent me is with me. The Father hasn’t left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.”
30 As he spoke these things, many believed in him. 31Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, “If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples. 32You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” #Psalms 119:45
33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s offspring, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How do you say, ‘You will be made free’?”
34 Jesus answered them, “Most certainly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin. 35A bondservant doesn’t live in the house forever. A son remains forever. 36If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37I know that you are Abraham’s offspring, yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you. 38I say the things which I have seen with my Father; and you also do the things which you have seen with your father.”
39 They answered him, “Our father is Abraham.”
Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham. 40But now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham didn’t do this. 41You do the works of your father.”
They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father, God.”
42 Therefore Jesus said to them, “If God were your father, you would love me, for I came out and have come from God. For I haven’t come of myself, but he sent me. 43Why don’t you understand my speech? Because you can’t hear my word. 44You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and doesn’t stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks on his own; for he is a liar, and the father of lies. 45But because I tell the truth, you don’t believe me. 46Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? 47He who is of God hears the words of God. For this cause you don’t hear, because you are not of God.”
48 Then the Jews answered him, “Don’t we say well that you are a Samaritan, and have a demon?”
49 Jesus answered, “I don’t have a demon, but I honour my Father and you dishonour me. 50But I don’t seek my own glory. There is one who seeks and judges. 51Most certainly, I tell you, if a person keeps my word, he will never see death.”
52 Then the Jews said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, as did the prophets; and you say, ‘If a man keeps my word, he will never taste of death.’ 53Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?”
54 Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is our God. 55You have not known him, but I know him. If I said, ‘I don’t know him,’ I would be like you, a liar. But I know him and keep his word. 56Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day. He saw it and was glad.”
57 The Jews therefore said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old! Have you seen Abraham?”
58 Jesus said to them, “Most certainly, I tell you, before Abraham came into existence, I AM.#Exodus 3:14”
59 Therefore they took up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple, having gone through the middle of them, and so passed by.
