Psalms 141

Evening Petition for Protection
1A psalm of David. Adonai, I call to You— come quickly to me! Hear my voice when I call to You.
2May my prayer be set before You like incense. May the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.
3Set a guard, Adonai, over my mouth. Keep watch over the door of my lips.
4Let not my heart turn to any evil thing, to practice deeds of wickedness with men that work iniquity, nor let me eat of their delicacies.
5Let the righteous strike me— it is kindness. Let him correct me— it is oil on my head —my head will not refuse it. Yet still my prayer is against their wickedness.
6Their judges are thrown down from a cliff. Then they will hear my words, since they are sweet.
7As when one plows and breaks open the earth, so our bones are scattered at the mouth of Sheol.
8For my eyes are toward You, God my Lord. In You I have taken refuge— do not expose my soul.
9Keep me from the jaws of the trap they have laid for me, and from the snares of the evildoers.
10Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while I pass by safely.

A Prayer Not to Sin
A psalm of David.
1Lord, I call to you. Come quickly.
Listen to me when I call to you.
2Let my prayer be like incense placed before you,
and my praise like the evening sacrifice.
3Lord, help me control my tongue;
help me be careful about what I say.
4Take away my desire to do evil
or to join others in doing wrong.
Don’t let me eat tasty food
with those who do evil.
5If a good person punished me, that would be kind.
If he corrected me, that would be like perfumed oil on my head.
I shouldn’t refuse it.
But I pray against those who do evil.
6Let their leaders be thrown down the cliffs.
Then people will know that I have spoken correctly:
7“The ground is plowed and broken up.
In the same way, our bones have been scattered at the grave.”
8God, I look to you for help.
I trust in you, Lord. Don’t let me die.
9Protect me from the traps they set for me
and from the net that evil people have spread.
10Let the wicked fall into their own nets,
but let me pass by safely.
