A Note about the Letter Concerning Purim
14[1] In the fourth year that Ptolemy and Cleopatra ruled Egypt,#11.1 the fourth year … ruled Egypt: There were three kings named Ptolemy whose queen was named Cleopatra, so the year referred to might be 114 b.c., 77 b.c., or 44 b.c. Dositheus and his son Ptolemy brought the letter about the Festival of Purim to Egypt. Dositheus claimed to be a priest from the Levi tribe, and he said that the letter was true and had been translated into Greek by Lysimachus son of Ptolemy,#11.1 Ptolemy … Ptolemy … Ptolemy: These refer to three different men named Ptolemy. who lived in Jerusalem.
