Jeremiah 42
42
1Johanan, Jezaniah,#42.1 Jezaniah: Hebrew “Jezaniah son of Hoshaiah”; one ancient translation “Azariah son of Hoshaiah” (see also 43.2 and the note there). the other army officers, and everyone else in the group, came to me 2and said, “Please, Jeremiah, pray to the Lord your God for us. Judah used to have many people, but as you can see, only a few of us are left. 3Ask the Lord to tell us where he wants us to go and what he wants us to do.”
4“All right,” I answered, “I will pray to the Lord your God, and I will tell you everything he says.”
5They answered, “The Lord himself will be our witness that we promise to do whatever he says, 6even if it isn't what we want to do. We will obey the Lord so that all will go well for us.”
7Ten days later, the Lord gave me an answer for 8Johanan, the officers, and the other people. So I called them together 9and told them that the Lord God of Israel had said:
You asked Jeremiah to pray and find out what you should do. 10I am sorry that I had to punish you, and so I now tell you to stay here in Judah, where I will plant you and build you up, instead of tearing you down and uprooting you. 11Don't be afraid of the King of Babylonia. I will protect you from him, 12and I will even force him to have mercy on you and give back your farms.
13But you might keep on saying, “We won't stay here in Judah, and we won't obey the Lord our God. 14We are going to Egypt, where there is plenty of food and no danger of war.”
15People of Judah, you survived when the Babylonian army attacked. Now you are planning to move to Egypt, and if you do go, this is what will happen. 16-17You are afraid of war, starvation, and disease here in Judah, but they will follow you to Egypt and kill you there. None of you will survive the disasters I will send.
18I, the Lord, was angry with the people of Jerusalem and punished them. And if you go to Egypt, I will be angry and punish you the same way. You will never again see your homeland. People will be horrified at what I do to you, and they will use the name of your city as a curse word.
Jeremiah Gives a Warning
19I told the people:
You escaped the disaster that struck Judah, but now the Lord warns you to stay away from Egypt. 20You asked me to pray and find out what the Lord our God wants you to do, and you promised to obey him. But that was a terrible mistake, 21because now that I have given you the Lord's answer, you refuse to obey him. 22And so, you will die in Egypt from war, hunger, and disease.

Jeremiah 42
42
1And all the captains of the forces, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least even to the greatest, 2came near and said unto Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we beseech thee, our supplication come before thee, and pray for us unto Jehovah thy God#GodHebrew: Elohim for all this remnant (for we are left a few of many, as thine eyes do behold us); 3that Jehovah thy God#GodHebrew: Elohim may shew us the way wherein we should walk, and the thing that we should do. 4And Jeremiah the prophet said unto them, I have heard; behold, I will pray unto Jehovah your God#GodHebrew: Elohim according to your words; and it shall come to pass that whatsoever thing Jehovah shall answer you, I will declare it unto you: I will keep nothing back from you. 5And they said to Jeremiah, Jehovah be a true and faithful witness amongst us, if we do not even according to all the word for which Jehovah thy God#GodHebrew: Elohim shall send thee to us. 6Whether it be good or whether it be evil, we will hearken unto the voice of Jehovah our God#GodHebrew: Elohim to whom we send thee; that it may be well with us when we hearken unto the voice of Jehovah our God#GodHebrew: Elohim
7And it came to pass at the end of ten days, that the word of Jehovah came unto Jeremiah. 8And he called Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, and all the people from the least even unto the greatest, 9and said unto them, Thus saith Jehovah the God#GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel, to whom ye sent me to present your supplication before him: 10If ye will still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not overthrow you, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up; for I repent me of the evil that I have done unto you. 11Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom ye are afraid: be not afraid of him, saith Jehovah; for I will be with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand. 12And I will grant mercies to you, that he may have mercy upon you, and cause you to return to your own land. 13But if ye say, We will not dwell in this land; so as not to hearken unto the voice of Jehovah your God#GodHebrew: Elohim 14saying, No; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger for bread; and there will we dwell; 15— and now, therefore, hear the word of Jehovah, ye remnant of Judah: thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God#GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel: If ye really set your faces to enter into Egypt, and go to sojourn there, 16then it shall come to pass, that the sword which ye fear shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, whereof ye are afraid, shall follow hard after you there in Egypt; and there ye shall die. 17And it shall be that all the men that have set their faces to go into Egypt to sojourn there shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence; and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that I will bring upon them. 18For thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God#GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel: As mine anger and my fury have been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so shall my fury be poured forth upon you, when ye shall enter into Egypt; and ye shall be an execration, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach, and ye shall see this place no more. 19Jehovah hath said concerning you, the remnant of Judah, Go ye not into Egypt. Know certainly that I have admonished you this day. 20For ye deceived yourselves in your own souls, when ye sent me unto Jehovah your God#GodHebrew: Elohim saying, Pray for us unto Jehovah our God#GodHebrew: Elohim and according to all that Jehovah our God#GodHebrew: Elohim shall say, so declare unto us, and we will do it. 21And I have this day declared it to you; but ye have not obeyed the voice of Jehovah your God#GodHebrew: Elohim nor anything for which he hath sent me unto you. 22And now know certainly that ye shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, in the place whither ye desire to go to sojourn.
